The aim of this study is to investigate facial temperature changes induced by facial expression and emotional state in order to recognize a persons emotion using facial thermal images. Background: Facial thermal images have two advantages compared to visual images. Firstly, facial temperature measured by thermal camera does not depend on skin color, darkness, and lighting condition. Secondly, facial thermal images are changed not only by facial expression but also emotional state. To our knowledge, there is no study to concurrently investigate these two sources of facial temperature changes. Method: 231 students participated in the experiment. Four kinds of stimuli inducing anger, fear, boredom, and neutral were presented to participants and the facial temperatures were measured by an infrared camera. Each stimulus consisted of baseline and emotion period. Baseline period lasted during 1min and emotion period 1~3min. In the data analysis, the temperature differences between the baseline and emotion state were analyzed. Eyes, mouth, and glabella were selected for facial expression features, and forehead, nose, cheeks were selected for emotional state features. Results: The temperatures of eyes, mouth, glanella, forehead, and nose area were significantly decreased during the emotional experience and the changes were significantly different by the kind of emotion. The result of linear discriminant analysis for emotion recognition showed that the correct classification percentage in four emotions was 62.7% when using both facial expression features and emotional state features. The accuracy was slightly but significantly decreased at 56.7% when using only facial expression features, and the accuracy was 40.2% when using only emotional state features. Conclusion: Facial expression features are essential in emotion recognition, but emotion state features are also important to classify the emotion. Application: The results of this study can be applied to human-computer interaction system in the work places or the automobiles.
We propose an emotional facial avatar that portrays the user's facial expressions with an emotional emphasis, while achieving visual and behavioral realism. This is achieved by unifying automatic analysis of facial expressions and animation of realistic 3D faces with details such as facial hair and hairstyles. To augment facial appearance according to the user's emotions, we use emotional templates representing typical emotions in an artistic way, which can be easily combined with the skin texture of the 3D face at runtime. Hence, our interface gives the user vision-based control over facial animation of the emotional avatar, easily changing its moods.
In the design and develop a virtual character, it is important to correctly deliver target emotions generated by the combination of facial expression and gesture. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of congruent/incongruent between gesture and facial expression on target emotion. In this study four emotions, joy, sadness, fear, and anger, are applied. The results of study showed that sadness emotion were incorrectly perceived. Moreover, it was perceived as anger instead of sadness. Sadness can be easily confused when facial expression and gestures were simultaneously presented. However, in the other emotional status, the intended emotional expressions were correctly perceived. The overall evaluation of virtual character's emotional expression was significantly low when joy gesture was combined with sad facial expression. The results of this study suggested that emotional gesture is more influential correctly to deliver target emotions to users. This study suggested that social cues like gender or age of virtual character should be further studied.
In this paper we propose a 3D emotional expression method using a comic model for effective sign-language communications. Until now we have investigated to produce more realistic facial and emotional expression. When representing only emotional expression, however, a comic expression could be better than the real picture of a face. The comic face is a comic-style expression model in which almost components except the necessary parts like eyebrows, eyes, nose and mouth are discarded. We represent emotional expression using Action Units(AU) of Facial Action Coding System(FACS). Experimental results show a possibility that the proposed method could be used efficiently for sign-language image communications.
Vision-based Human computer interaction is an emerging field of science and industry to provide natural way to communicate with human and computer. In that sense, inferring the emotional state of the person based on the facial expression recognition is an important issue. In this paper, we present a novel approach to recognize facial expression from a sequence of input images using emotional specific HMM (Hidden Markov Model) and facial motion tracking based on optical flow. Conventionally, in the HMM which consists of basic emotional states, it is considered natural that transitions between emotions are imposed to pass through neutral state. However, in this work we propose an enhanced transition framework model which consists of transitions between each emotional state without passing through neutral state in addition to a traditional transition model. For the localization of facial features from video sequence we exploit template matching and optical flow. The facial feature displacements traced by the optical flow are used for input parameters to HMM for facial expression recognition. From the experiment, we can prove that the proposed framework can effectively recognize the facial expression in real time.

Nowadays, many robots have evolved to imitate human social skills such that sociable interaction with humans is possible. Socially interactive robots require abilities different from that of conventional robots. For instance, human-robot interactions are accompanied by emotion similar to human-human interactions. Robot emotional expression is thus very important for humans. This is particularly true for facial expressions, which play an important role in communication amongst other non-verbal forms. In this paper, we introduce a method of creating lifelike facial expressions in robots using variation of affect values which consist of the robot's emotions based on emotional boundaries. The proposed method was examined by experiments of two facial robot simulators.

In the context of contemporary digital media, virtual influencers have become an increasingly important form of socialization and entertainment, in which emotional expression is a key factor in attracting viewers. In this study, we take Luo Tianyi, a Chinese virtual influencer, as an example to explore how emotions are expressed and perceived through facial expressions in different types of videos. Using Paul Ekman's Facial Action Coding System (FACS) and six basic emotion classifications, the study systematically analyzes Luo Tianyi's emotional expressions in three types of videos, namely Music show, Festivals and Brand Cooperation. During the study, Luo Tianyi's facial expressions and emotional expressions were analyzed through rigorous coding and categorization, as well as matching the context of the video content. The results show that Enjoyment is the most frequently expressed emotion by Luo Tianyi, reflecting the centrality of positive emotions in content creation. Meanwhile, the presence of other emotion types reveals the virtual influencer's efforts to create emotionally rich and authentic experiences. The frequency and variety of emotions expressed in different video genres indicate Luo Tianyi's diverse strategies for communicating and connecting with viewers in different contexts. The study provides an empirical basis for understanding and utilizing virtual influencers' emotional expressions, and offers valuable insights for digital media content creators to design emotional expression strategies. Overall, this study is valuable for understanding the complexity of virtual influencer emotional expression and its importance in digital media strategy.
We propose an emotional training framework that can determine the initial symptom of schizophrenia by using emotional analysis method through facial expression change. We use Emotion API in Microsoft to obtain facial expressions and emotion values at the present time. We analyzed these values and recognized subtle facial expressions that change with time. The emotion states were classified according to the peak analysis-based variance method in order to measure the emotions appearing in facial expressions according to time. The proposed method analyzes the lack of emotional recognition and expressive ability by using characteristics that are different from the emotional state changes classified according to the six basic emotions proposed by Ekman. As a result, the analyzed values are integrated into the image color transfer framework so that users can easily recognize and train their own emotional changes.

The present study investigated whether the emotional states reading ability through facial expression changes by age(3-, 5-year-old and university student groups), sex(male, female), facial expression's presenting areas(face, eyes) and the type of emotions(basic emotions, complex emotions). 32 types of emotional state's facial expressions which are linked relatively strong with the emotional vocabularies were used as stimuli. Stimuli were collected by taking photographs of professional actors facial expression performance. Each individuals were presented with stories which set off certain emotions, and then were asked to choose a facial expression that the principal character would have made for the occasion presented in stories. The result showed that the ability of facial expression reading improves as the age get higher. Also, they performed better with the condition of face than eyes, and basic emotions than complex emotions. While female doesn't show any performance difference with the presenting areas, male shows better performance in case of facial condition compared with eye condition. The results demonstrate that age, facial expression's presenting areas and the type of emotions effect on estimation of other people's emotion through facial expressions.
In this paper we propose an emotional expression method using a comic model and special marks for effective sign-language communications. In the comic model, we can use some special marks for the purpose of emphasizing various emotions. We represent emotional expression using Action Units(AU) of Facial Action Coding System(FACS) and define Special Unit(SU) for emphasizing the emotions. Experimental results show a possibility that the proposed method could be used efficiently for sign-language image communications.
