  • The antimicrobial activities of emodin and its derivatives (anthraquinone, alizarin, and alizarin-3-methyliminodiacetic acid) were evaluated using a paper disc diffusion method against foodborne bacteria (Bacillus cereus, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus intermedius, Salmonella typhimurium and Shigella sonnei). Emodin isolated from C. tora seeds has an antimicrobial activity against Bacillus cereus, followed by alizarin-3-methyliminodiacetic acid ($13.0{\pm}2.5mm$) and alizarin ($11.5{\pm}1.2mm$). Furthermore, emodin showed the antimicrobial activity against S. sonnei and S. typhimurium. In conclusion, C. tora seed and its active component derivatives are useful for the development of natural products on food supplemental agents and pharmaceuticals.

  • The rhizome of Polygonum sachalinense Fr. Schm. (=Reynoutria sachalinensis Nakai, Polygonaceae) has been used as "Polygoni Rhizoma" (Hu Zhang) in the Orient as laxatives, diuretics and for treatment of suppurative dermatitis, gonorrhoea, favus and athlete's foot. From the methanolic extract of the dried rhizome physcion, emodin, emodin-8-O-$\beta$-D-glucoside as anthraquinone derivatives and .betha.-sitosterol glucoside were isolated and identified. Stilbene derivatives which have antibacterial and antifungal activities were also isolated.

  • Aloe-emodin (1, 8-dihydroxy-3-hydroxyl-methylanthraquinone; AE) and emodin (1,3,8-trihydroxy-6-methylanthraquinone; EM) are anthraquinone derivatives that have been detected in some medical plants and share similar anthraquinone structures. AE and EM have been shown to exhibit anticancer activities in various cancer cell lines; however, the inhibitory effects of these derivatives on the growth of cancer cells were previously reported to be different. Gastric cancer is the second most common cause of cancer cell death worldwide. In the present study, we examined the inhibitory effects of 0.05 mM AE and 0.05 mM EM on the proliferation of the MKN45 human gastric cancer cell line. The proliferation of MKN45 cells was significantly inhibited in AE- and EM-treated groups 24 h and 48 h after treatment. Furthermore, the inhibitory effects of EM were stronger than those of AE. The cell cycle of MKN45 cells were arrested in G0/G1 phase or G0/G1 and G2/M phases by AE and EM, respectively. However, an analysis of intracellular polyamine levels and DNA fragmentation revealed that the mechanisms underlying cell death following cell arrest induced by AE and EM differed.

  • As one of the studies for Korean cultivated Rhubarb, which has been used stomachic bitter, laxative and purgative, etc, MeOH extract of the leaves was fractionated with ether, ethylacetate. From the ether fraction of MeOH extract, two anthraquinone derivatives, 1,6,8-trihydroxy-3-methyl anthraquinone(emodin, $C_{15}H_{10}O_5$), 1,6,8-trihydroxy-3-hydroxymethyl anthraquinone (citrerosein, $C_{15}H_{10}O_6$) and from the ethyl acetate fraction of MeOH extract, one anthraquinone derivative, emodin-8-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside$(C_{21}H_{20}O_{10})$ were isolated and identified through the physico-chemical properties and spectroscopic evidences(UV, IR, NMR, Mass), respectively.

  • Besides the emodin, three anthraquinone derivatives were isolated from the roots of Polygonum ciliinerve (Nakai) Owi which is indigenous exclusively to Korea. Two of them were identified as physcion and emodin-8-O-${\beta}$-D-glucoside by mp, uv, ir and nmr spectra. And the third was converted to physcion and sugar by hydrolysis. The quantitative analysis of free and combined form of emodin and physcion was done by the spectrophotometry.

  • Objective: Polygonum multiflorum Thunberg (Polygonaceae) has been traditionally used as a tonic and the purgative in China and Korea. The genus Polygonum is a source of a wide range of phenolic compound, flavanoids, anthraquinones, stilbenes and tannins. In this study, three anthraquinones were isolated and quantitative determination of anthraquinones from P multiflorum has been developed for quality standardization. Methods : Three anthraquinone derivatives were isolated from a methanol extract of the radix of P. multiflorum by the chromatographic separation. Their structures were identified as emodin, physcion and ${\omega}$-hydroxyemodin on the basis of spectral data (MS, lH-NMR, 13C-NMR) and chemical analysis. HPLC analysis was performed to determine the contents of emodin, physcion, chrysophanol, rhein and ${\omega}$-hydroxyemodin in P. multiflorum from different specimens were collected from twenty Korean markets. Results: According to the results, the contents of emodin, physcion, chrysophanol, rhein and ${\omega}$-hydroxyemodin were 0.145%, 0.434%, 0.016%, 0.026%, 0.030% by HPLC, respectively. Conclusions : In these results, we have determined the contents of emodin, physcion, chrysophanol, rhein and ${\omega}$-hydroxyemodin in P. multiflorum, respectively. We hope that this study will contribute to the standardization and quality control of herbal medicine.

  • Four anthraquinone derivatives were isolated from the root of Rumex japonicus Houtt. These compounds were identified as physcion, emodin, chrysophanol-10,10'-bianthrone and $physcion-10,10'-bianthrone^(a)$, respectively. The last compound (a), especially, showed strong activity against A549, PC-3, UO-31 and HCT-15 human cancer cell lines with $IC_{50}$ values, ranging from 0.45 to $1.33\;{\mu}g/ml^{-1})$.
