  • Lateral epicondylitis, also known as 'tennis elbow', is a degenerative rather than inflammatory tendinopathy, causing chronic recalcitrant pain in elbow joints. Although most patients with lateral epicondylitis resolve spontaneously or with standard conservative management, few refractory lateral epicondylitis are candidates for alternative non-operative and operative modalities. Other than standard conservative treatments including rest, analgesics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, orthosis and physical therapies, nonoperative treatments encompass interventional therapies include different types of injections, such as corticosteroid, lidocaine, autologous blood, platelet-rich plasma, and botulinum toxin, which are available for both short-term and long-term outcomes in pain resolution and functional improvement. In addition, newly emerging biologic enhancement products such as bone marrow aspirate concentrate and autologous tenocyte injectates are also under clinical use and investigations. Despite all non-operative therapeutic trials, persistent debilitating pain in patients with lateral epicondylitis for more than 6 months are candidates for surgical treatment, which include open, percutaneous, and arthroscopic approaches. This review addresses the current updates on emerging non-operative injection therapies as well as arthroscopic intervention in lateral epicondylitis.

  • The purpose of this study is to grasp the understanding of smart cities and to review whether the common perception of smart cities, as people understand it, is changing over time. This study analyzes keywords related to smart cities used in social network services (SNSs) in 2011, 2016, and 2020 respectively through semantic network analysis. Smart city discussions appearing on SNS in 2011 mainly focused on technology, and the results of 2016 were generally similar to those of 2011. We can also find policy or business-oriented characteristics in emerging countries in 2020. We highlight that all the results of 2011, 2016, and 2020 have some correlation with each other through QAP(Quadratic Assignment Procedure) correlation analysis, and among them, the correlation between 2011 and 2016 is analyzed the most. The results of the frequency analysis, centrality analysis, and CONCOR(CONvergence of interaction CORrelation) analysis support these results. The results of this study help establish policies that reflect the needs and opinions of citizens in planning smart cities by identifying trends and paradigm transitions expressed by people in SNS. Furthermore, it is expected to help emerging countries by enhancing the understanding of the essence and trend of smart cities and to contribute by suggesting the direction of more sustainable technology development in future smart city policies for leading countries.

  • In this article, we review the study trends of three-dimensional (3D) displays that can display stereoscopic images from the perspective of a display device. 3D display technology can be divided into light field, holographic, and volume displays. Light field display is a display that can reproduce the intensity and direction of light or 'ray' in each pixel. It can display stereoscopic images with less information than a holographic display and does not require coherence of the light source. Therefore, it is expected that it will be commercialized before the holographic display. Meanwhile, the holographic display creates a stereoscopic image by completely reproducing the wavefront of an image using diffraction in terms of wave characteristics of light. This technology is considered to be able to obtain the most complete stereoscopic image, and the digital holographic display using a spatial light modulator (SLM) is expected to be the ultimate stereoscopic display. However, the digital holographic display still experiences the problem of a narrow viewing angle due to the finite pixel pitch of the SLM. Therefore, various attempts have been made at solving this problem. Volumetric display is a technology that directly creates a stereoscopic image by forming a spatial pixel, which is known as a volumetric pixel, in a physical space, and has a significant advantage in that it can easily solve the problem of the viewing angle. This technology has already been tested for commercial purposes by several leading companies. In this paper, we will examine recent research trends regarding these 3D displays and near-eye display that is emerging as a significant application field of these technologies.

  • Introduction: Upper aero-digestive tract cancer is a multidimensional problem, international trends showing complex rises and falls in incidence and mortality across the globe, with variation across different cultural and socio-economic groups. This paper seeks some explanations and identifies some research and policy needs. Methodological Approach: The literature illustrates the multifactorial nature of carcinogenesis. At the cellular level, it is viewed as a multistep process involving multiple mutations and selection for cells with progressively increasing capacity for proliferation, survival, invasion, and metastasis. Established and emerging risk factors, in addition to changes in incidence and prevalence of cancers of the upper aero-digestive tract, were identified. Risk Factors: Exposure to tobacco and alcohol, as well as diets inadequate in fresh fruits and vegetables, remain the major risk factors, with persistent infection by particular so-called "high risk" genotypes of human papillomavirus increasingly recognised as also playing an important role in a subset of cases, particularly for the oropharynx. Chronic trauma to oral mucosa from poor restorations and prostheses, in addition to poor oral hygiene with a consequent heavy microbial load in the mouth, are also emerging as significant risk factors. Conclusions: Understanding and quantifying the impact of individual risk factors for these cancers is vital for health decision-making, planning and prevention. National policies and programmes should be designed and implemented to control exposure to environmental risks, by legislation if necessary, and to raise awareness so that people are provided with the information and support they need to adopt healthy lifestyles.

  • Since the mid-twentieth century, geology has gradually evolved as an interdisciplinary context in South Korea. The journal of Economic and Environmental Geology (EEG) has a long history of over 52 years and published interdisciplinary articles based on geology. In this study, we performed a literature review using topic modeling based on Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), an unsupervised machine learning model, to identify geological topics, historical trends (classic topics and emerging topics), and association by analyzing titles, keywords, and abstracts of 2,571 publications in EEG during 1968-2020. The results showed that 8 topics ('petrology and geochemistry', 'hydrology and hydrogeology', 'economic geology', 'volcanology', 'soil contaminant and remediation', 'general and structural geology', 'geophysics and geophysical exploration', and 'clay mineral') were identified in the EEG. Before 1994, classic topics ('economic geology', 'volcanology', and 'general and structure geology') were dominant research trends. After 1994, emerging topics ('hydrology and hydrogeology', 'soil contaminant and remediation', 'clay mineral') have arisen, and its portion has gradually increased. The result of association analysis showed that EEG tends to be more comprehensive based on 'economic geology'. Our results provide understanding of how geological research topics branch out and merge with other fields using a useful literature review tool for geological research in South Korea.
