  • Foresight, a major methodological tool in the STI policy toolbox, has recently featured new directions in methodological development, becoming influenced by progress in information and communication technologies and online tools. However, no overview of these directions has been available so far. Based on a literature review, an interactive workshop, and an international expert survey as well as expert interviews, the research presented here attempts to shed light onto some of the relevant issues by providing a structured overview of recent changes in order to further the debate on the future directions of methodological development in foresight. The paper outlines four clusters of emerging approaches in foresight:Integrated qualitative and quantitative approaches, IT-based and automated foresight, experiential foresight including new forms of communication and interaction such as visualization and gaming, and open and crowd-sourced approaches. The benefits and challenges of the approaches known so far are categorized and summarized, and areas of potential use for each of the clusters in STI contexts are identified.

  • Forest managers are increasingly being challenged to produce goods and services to society while managing for ecosystem sustainability. Forest ecosystem management is an emerging philosophy to achieve these objectives. We synthesized some basic concepts of forest ecosystem, sustainability in forests and forest ecosystem management, and described the importances of long-term ecological studies. Also we presented few relatively simple principles of forest ecosystem management, strategies, and case studies for integrating forest ecosystem management principles into the forest management planning process. It was emphasizd that in forest ecosystem management process, society, land managers, forest managers, and scientists be entered into a partnership to reshape management goals, redefine objectives, and redirect management actions in response to changing socioeconomic information and evolving bioogical, physical, chemical, and environmental conditions. Agreement or disagreement with our synthesis and opinions on forest ecosystem management is out of the primary objective of this paper, which is to stimulate new and creative approaches to forest ecosystem management as an emerging issue in forestry.

  • Landscape ecology is an emerging interdisciplinary ecology field to understand the holistic human and natural systems on the basis of concept and database obtained from pure ecology. Landscape ecology is an integrated ecology widely available for environmental science such as nature conservation and sustainable land-use planning. It is also a practical study as an applied ecology to restore and to manage local environment. Landscape ecological study is realized by embodiment of human disturbance system which is rigorously extending on natural system. Considering Korean status without landscape ecological studies, we briefly reviewed establishing process, study goal and methodology of landscape ecology as well as the related several concepts through current landscape ecological studies in the world. We hope that this paper will be helpful to ecologists having interest in landscape ecology.

  • This research deals with the basic ideas and implementation used for developing competitive advantage in the market they serve. The market to which a company belongs is continuously evolving, not static. Therefore, the company is required to adopt a suitable strategy in the market it serves. Marketing strategy establishment requires continual adjustment in the strategy content and redirection in organizational actions to address emerging market problems and opportunities. Much of the strategic implementation is characterized by firefights aimed at solving emerging, unforeseen problems. The concept of strategy was originally introduced to provide companies with a rational means of coping with environmental changes. An old Oriental proverb said that "knowing myself and then understanding others is the best way to success". In line with the proverb, the starting point of marketing strategy establishment for the competitive advantage is to understand the activities of a company wholly. After analyzing the scope of its activities, a company has to understand the market structure, to review competitive environments, to formulate the base of the competitive strategy and to adopt differentiation strategies for obtaining the competitive advantage.

  • Ubiquitous computing is an emerging technic for various areas such as public, private (individual), military, industrial, medical sectors. The applications of ubiquitous computing are expected to be prevailed from home to office. Unfortunately, it is not effective to apply existing system/software development methodologies into this emerging ubiquitous computing applications. In this paper, MBASE (Model-Based system Architecting and Software Engineering) is applied as a development method of ubiquitous computing applications. The advantage of MBASE is to identify mismatches of product, process, property, and success models and resolve them in developing the ubiquitous computing applications. A SmartView, a ubiquitous computing application, is presented as a case study o f MBASE.

  • Multi-scale representations are effective in characterising the time-frequency characteristics of financial return series. They have the capability to reveal the properties not evident with typical time domain analysis. Given the aforesaid, this study derives crucial insights from multi scale analysis to investigate the co-movements between Indian and emerging Asian equity markets using wavelet correlation and wavelet coherence measures. It is reported that the Indian equity market is strongly integrated with Asian equity markets at lower frequency scales and relatively less blended at higher frequencies. On the other hand the results from cross correlations suggest that the lead-lag relationship becomes substantial as we turn to lower frequency scales and finally, wavelet coherence demonstrates that this correlation eventually grows strong in the interim of the crises period at lower frequency scales. Overall the findings are relevant and have strong policy and practical implications.

  • Regional innovation systems and clusters represent a fashionable conceptual basis for regional innovation policies in many industrialized countries (including South Korea). Due to questions related to climate change and environment-friendly energy production, the green industry has been increasingly discussed in relation to regional innovation systems and clusters. This explorative paper analyzes these discussions and critically examines the emergence of green clusters in South Korea based on the case of the wind power cluster in Jeonbuk Province. It tentatively concludes that the role of the central government is too powerful and the role of regional actors (policy-makers and entrepreneurs) is too weak for the successful emergence of green clusters.

  • The recent financial crises cause the co-movement and transmit the risk across different markets and assets. It is well known that market fear affects the quality of credit in the financial markets. In this context, this study examines the co-movement between the volatility index (VIX) of the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE), or VIX, and six emerging countries' credit default swaps (CDSs), by implementing wavelet coherence. Our research aims at revealing whether the VIX can be used to hedge against the bubble behavior of the CDS market in different investment holding periods (short-run, medium-run, and long-run), as well as whether either market can be used to manage and hedge overall market downside risks. The wavelet coherence results show a high degree of co-movement between the VIX and CDS during the 2007-2009 global financial crisis, across the 16-64 weeks' frequency band. In addition, we observe that the positive correlation between the VIX and the CDS markets, implying that the market turmoil intensifies the co-movement between the VIX and CDS markets.
