  • The metal-ferroelectric-metal (MFM) capacitor in the ferroelectric random access memory (FeRAM) embedded RFID chip is used in both the memory cell region and the peripheral analog and digital circuit area for capacitance parameter control. The capacitance value of the MFM capacitor is about 30 times larger than that of conventional capacitors, such as the poly-insulator-poly (PIP) capacitor and the metal-insulator-metal (MIM) capacitor. An MFM capacitor directly stacked over the analog and memory circuit region can share the layout area with the circuit region; thus, the chip size can be reduced by about 60%. The energy transformation efficiency using the MFM scheme is higher than that of the PIP scheme in RFID chips. The radio frequency operational signal properties using circuits with MFM capacitors are almost the same as or better than with PIP, MIM, and MOS capacitors. For the default value specification requirement, the default set cell is designed with an additional dummy cell.

  • In the deep sub-micron ICs, growing amounts of on-die memory and scaling effects make embedded memories increasingly vulnerable to reliability and yield problems. Spare columns are often included in memories to repair defective cells or bit lines during production test. In many cases, the repair process will not use all spare columns. Schemes have been proposed to exploit these unused spare columns to store additional check bits which can be used to reduce the miscorrection probability for triple errors in single error correction-double error detection (SEC-DED). These additional check bits increase the dimensions of the parity check matrix (H-matrix) requiring extra area overhead. A method is proposed in this paper to efficiently fill the extra rows of the H-matrix on the basis of similarity of logic between the other rows. Optimization of the whole H-matrix is accomplished through logic sharing within a feasible operating time resulting in reduced area overhead. A detailed implementation using fuse technology is also proposed in this paper.

  • Flash memories are one of best media to support portable computers in mobile computing environment. The features of non-volatility, low power consumption. and fast access time for read operations are sufficient grounds to support flash memory as major database storage components of portable computers. However. we need to Improve traditional transaction management scheme due to the relatively slow characteristics of flash operation as compared to RAM memory. In order to achieve this goal. we devise a new scheme called flash-aware transaction management (FATM). FATM improves transaction performance by exploiting SRAM and W-Cache, We also propose a simulation model to show the performance of FATM. Based on the results of the performance evaluation, we conclude that FATM scheme outperforms the traditional scheme.

  • Recent advancement in wireless communications and electronics has enabled the development of low power sensor network. Wireless sensor network are often used in remote monitoring control applications, health care, security and environmental monitoring. Wireless sensor networks are an emerging technology consisting of small, low-power, and low-cost devices that integrate limited computation, sensing, and radio communication capabilities. Sensor network platform for health care has been designed, fabricated and tested. This system consists of an embedded micro-controller, Radio Frequency (RF) transceiver, power management, I/O expansion, and serial communication (RS-232). The hardware platform uses Atmel ATmega128L 8-bit ultra low power RISC processor with 128KB flash memory as the program memory and 4KB SRAM as the data memory. The radio transceiver (Chipcon CC1000) operates in the ISM band at 433MHz or 916MHz with a maximum data rate of 76.8kbps. Also, the indoor radio range is approximately 20-30m. When many sensors have to communicate with the controller, standard communication interfaces such as Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) or Integrated Circuit ($I^{2}C$) allow sharing a single communication bus. With its low power, the smallest and low cost design, the wireless sensor network system and wireless sensing electronics to collect health-related information of human vitality and main physiological parameters (ECG, Temperature, Perspiration, Blood Pressure and some more vitality parameters, etc.)

  • Continuum manipulators as a kind of mechanical arms are useful tools in special robotic applications. In medical applications, like colonoscopy, a maneuverable thin and flexible manipulator is required. This research is focused on developing a basic module for such an application using shape memory alloys (SMA). In the structure of the module three wires of SMA are uniformly distributed and attached to the circumference of a flexible tube. By activating wires, individually or together, different rotation regimes are provided. SMA model is used based on Brinson work. The SMA model is combined to model of flexible tube to provide a composite model of the module. Simulating the model in Matlab provided a platform to be used to develop controller. Complex and nonlinear behavior of SMA make the control problem hard especially when a few SMA actuators are active simultaneously. In this paper, position control of the two degree of freedom module is under focus. An experimental control strategy is developed to regulate a desired position in the module. The simulation results present a reasonable performance of the controller. Moreover, the results are verified through experiments and show that the continuum module of this paper would be used in real modular manipulators.

  • In this paper, we propose to solve the problem of increasing system memory usage due to an increase in the number of mapping information management when using a NAND flash memory-based storage device in an existing sector-based file system. The proposed technique is to store only mapping information in page units based on index blocks and manage them in block units. To this end, the proposed technique uses a sequential offset for storing and managing a plurality of mapping information in one page in a small block, and a reverse offset for a spare page corresponding to a change in mapping information in the block. Through this, the proposed technique has the advantage that the number of block-unit deletions is less than that of the existing technique, and the system memory usage required for mapping information management is low. Reduced by about 32%.

  • Recently, due to the rapid diffusion of intelligent systems and IoT technologies, power saving techniques in real-time embedded systems has become important. In this paper, we propose P-GA (Parallel Genetic Algorithm), a scheduling algorithm aims at reducing the power consumption of real-time systems in multi-core hybrid memory environments. P-GA improves the Proportional-Fairness (PF) algorithm devised for multi-core environments by combining the dynamic voltage/frequency scaling of the processor with the nonvolatile memory technologies. Specifically, P-GA applies genetic algorithms for optimizing the voltage and frequency modes of processors and the memory types, thereby minimizing the power consumptions of the task set. Simulation experiments show that the power consumption of P-GA is reduced by 2.85 times compared to the conventional schemes.

  • An image is partitioned into non-overlapping $8{\times}8$ blocks fer JPEG compression. A scan order converter is placed before the JPEG encoder to provide $8{\times}8$ blocks from the pixels in raster scan order. In general, its architecture requires two line memories for storing eight lines separately to allow the concurrent memory access by both the camera and JPEG processors. Although such architecture is simple to be implemented, it can be inefficient due to too excessive memory requirement as the image resolution increases. However, no deterministic addressing equation has been developed for scan conversion. In this paper, an effective memory addressing algorithm is proposed that can be devised only by adders and subtracters to implement a scan converter based on the single line memory.

  • Flash memory is mostly used on smart devices and embedded systems because of its nonvolatile memory, low power, quick I/O, resistant shock, and other benefits. Generally the typical file systems base on the NAND flash memory are YAFFS2, JFFS2, UBIFS, and etc. In this paper, we had variously made an experiment regarding I/O performance using our schemes and the UBIFS of the latest Linux Kernel. The proposed I/O performance analyses were classified as a sequential access and a random access. Our experiment consists of 6 cases using kmalloc(), vmalloc(), and kmem_cache(). As a result of our experiment analyses, the sequential reading and the sequential rewriting increased by 12%, 11% when the Case 2 has applied vmalloc() and kmalloc() to the UBI subsystem and the UBIFS. Also, the performance improved more by 7.82%, 6.90% than the Case 1 at the random read and the random write.
