  • Copolymerization of ethylene and ${\alpha}$-olefin using $rac-Et[Ind]_2ZrCl_2/MAO$ catalyst embedded onto polysty-rene was examined. The embedded catalyst was prepared by polymerizing a small amount of styrene with $rac-Et[Ind]_2ZrCl_2$. The catalytic activities of the embedded catalyst were higher than those of the homogeneous catalystregardless of comonomer type and the characteristic of the active sites of the embedded catalyst was not affected duringthe embedding process. Based on the DSC and NMR analyses of the produced copolymers, it was thought that theembedded catalyst had similar or slightly better comonomer incorporation ability. Furthermore, the copolymers produced by the embedded catalyst had higher bulk densities and better particle morphology than those by the homogeneous catalyst.

  • This paper reports a novel gas sensing method by using a thermoelectric device, thermopile in this case, with an embedded tin oxide catalyst. By using a thin catalyst film, the response time and recovery time were remarkably improved. The fabricated gas sensor was characterized through detecting NOx gas with various concentrations.

  • We presented a systematic investigation on the growth of CNTs including SWNTs on nano-catalyst-embedded particles by PECVD. For CNTs growth, the mixture of $C_2H_2$ and $NH_3$ was used. The total pressure and temperature were kept at 3.25 Torr and 650 $^{\circ}C$, respectively. Finally, we measured the field emission property from CNTs grown from nano-catalyst embedded zeolite particles in vacuum chamber (<$10^{-7}$ Torr).

  • This study focused on the effect of autonomic microcapsules on the mechanical properties of structural material. Several types of microcapsules with healing agents were manufactured by varying agitation speed of high speed stirrer. The size distribution of microcapsules was measured by a particle size analzer. The epoxy specimens embedded with microcapsules were manufactured and the degree of cure of such epoxy specimen was measured by a differential scanning calorimetry. The tensile modulus and tensile strength in epoxy specimens embedded with microcapsules were evaluated in order to investigate the effects of microcapsules on mechanical properties of structural materials. The configuration of microcapsules and morphology of fracture surfaces for the epoxy specimen were examined by an optical microcope and a scanning electron microscope. According to the results, tensile strength of the epoxy specimen embedded with microcapsules was indicated a little reduction, but tensile modulus was not much affected on microcapsules.

  • Since catalyst technology is one of the promising technologies to improve the working performance of next generation energy and electronic devices, many efforts have been made to develop various catalysts with high efficiency at a low cost. However, there are remaining challenges to be resolved in order to use the suggested catalytic materials, such as platinum (Pt), gold (Au), and palladium (Pd), due to their poor cost-effectiveness for device applications. In this study, to overcome these challenges, we suggest a useful method to increase the surface area of a noble metal catalyst material, resulting in a reduction of the total amount of catalyst usage. By employing block copolymer (BCP) self-assembly and nano-transfer printing (n-TP) processes, we successfully fabricated sub-20 nm Pt line and cross-bar patterns. Furthermore, we obtained a highly ordered Pt cross-bar pattern on a Ni thin film and a Pt-embedded Ni thin film, which can be used as hetero hybrid alloy catalyst structure. For a detailed analysis of the hybrid catalytic material, we used scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), which revealed a well-defined nanoporous Pt nanostructure on the Ni thin film. Based on these results, we expect that the successful hybridization of various catalytic nanostructures can be extended to other material systems and devices in the near future.

  • Structural polymer composites are susceptible to damage in the form of cracks, which form deep within the structure where detection is difficult and repair is almost impossible. A recent methodology for the damage repair of polymer composites using the self-healing technique is reported. The polymerization of the healing agent is triggered by contact with an embedded catalyst, being necessary to damage repair of polymer composites. For this purpose, the self-healing concept is introduced and the manufacturing process of microcapsule with the healing agent is briefly described. The polymerization between the healing agent and the catalyst is verified by the use of ESEM and IR spectroscopy. Finally the efficiency of the self-healing technique is investigated by measuring the critical load of TDCB specimen.

  • In this paper, cobalt embedded in nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon nanotubes (CoNSTs) were synthesized for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts. The CoNSTs were prepared through a facile heat treatment method without any templates. Different amounts of the metal salt were employed to examine the physicochemical and electrochemical properties of the CoNSTs. The CoNSTs showed the bamboo-like tube morphology with the encased Co nanoparticles in the tubes. Through the x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, the catalysts exhibited different chemical states of the nitrogen and sulfur species. As a result, the CoNST performed high activity toward the ORR in an acidic condition with the onset potential of 0.863 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode). It was clearly demonstrated from the electrochemical characterizations that the quality of the nitrogen and sulfur species significantly influences the ORR activity rather than the total amount of the dopants.

  • In this study, hyaluronic acid (HA) was electro-spun to fabricate nanofibrous membranes for support materials. Because HA is very hygroscopic, it is difficult to obtain enough viscosity to apply electrospinning method. Therefore, we mixed HA with polyethylene oxide (PEO) to obtain proper viscosity and added adipic acid (ADH) to promote cross-linking of PEO/HA during electrospinning. The morphology of PEO/HA membrane was optimized according to PEO/HA concentration ratio and spinning rate. Finally, we fabricated gold-nanoparticle-embedded PEO/HA membranes and their catalyst activities were evaluated in tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidation.
