This study estimates possibility and limitation on production of DEM using aerial photo by comparison of DEMs using aerial photo and digital map. Mountain and urban areas show higher elevation in DEM using aerial photo than in DEM using digital map, due to height of vegetation cover and buildings, respectively. However, artificial affects due to bridge, embankment and road construction are responsible for areas with higher elevation in DEM using digital map than in DEM using aerial photo. This difference in elevation between DEMs seems to be caused by rapid change in real elevation that is not reflected in digital map. There is little difference in elevation between DEMs in plain and area with little or no vegetation cover. This study suggests that problems associated with vegetation cover and error by GCP should be fixed, although DEM using aerial photo can quantitatively and 3-dimensionally reconstruct topography with a high resolution.
Recent researches on debris flow is focused on understanding its movement mechanism and building a numerical simulator to predict its behavior. However, previous simulators emulating fluid-like debris flow have limitations in numerical stability, geometric modeling and application of various boundary conditions. In this study, depth integration is applied to continuity equation and force equilibrium for debris flow. Thickness of sediment, and average velocities in x and y flow direction are chosen for main variables in the analysis, which improve numerical stability in the area with zero thickness. Petrov-Galerkin formulation uses a discontinuous test function of the weighted matrix from DG scheme. Presented mechanical constitutive model combines fluid and granular behaviors for debris flow. Effects on slope angle, inducing debris height, and bottom friction resistance are investigated for a simple slope. Numerical results also show the effect of embankment at the bottom of the slope. Developed numerical simulator can assess various risk factors for the expected area of debris flow, and facilitate embankment design in order to minimize damage.
Based on the previous studies proposed by many researchers about the evaluation method of replacement depth, a modified formula which incorporates the effect factors such as embanked height and load, replacement depth, cohesive force of original ground and unit weight of embankment etc, was suggested in this study. The new proposed formula was applied in the three construction sites of Kwangyang-Bay Area (Yeocheon, Youlchon, and Kwangyang) constructed by the compulsion replacement method. The application of the new method was investigated through these case studies in domestics. A modified bearing capacity parameter was estimated form the relationship of modified embankment loading and ultimate bearing capacity resulted from the site investigation, and the replacement depth was predicted by using this parameter. In addition, through the relationship analyses between each effect factors to the replacement depth in two areas, Yeocheon and Youlchon, an empirical prediction method which can evaluate the replacement depth in adjoining area was proposed. The predicted value obtained by new method is approximately similar to the measured replacement depth in Kwangyang area.
Conventional monitoring method is used for evaluation of the reservoir and levee at the highest height sections. In recent years, automated measurement technology has been developed, and the measurement results are transmitted, collected and stored in real time into management office. Despite the development of real time monitoring technology, the measurement results are not used directly or indirectly with facility management at real time. Recently, as wireless sensor network measurement technology has been developed based on internet of things, this study proposed a real - time measurement and evaluation system based on wireless sensor network technology in the reservoir structure. As a result of the seepage analysis for the application, it was confirmed that the volumetric water content changes together with the change of the seepage line inside the embankment body according to the change of the water level of the embankment. In other words, the applicability of the measurement system with the volumetric water ratio set as the sensor node was verified.

The design of sand mat should be reviewed by the behaviour of excess pore pressure which is obtained by combining characteristics of soft ground with the permeability of sand mat. In this paper, in order to investigate the distribution of hydraulic gradient of sand mat, a banking model test was performed using dredged sand as materials of sand mat, and these results were compared by the numerical analysis results utilizing Terzaghi's consolidation equation. The results show that the pore pressure was influenced by the settlement increasing in the central area of sand mat as the height of embankment increases, and uprising speed of excess pore pressure due to residing water pressure is delayed compared with the results of numerical analysis. Finally, the construction of sand mat should be spreaded to reduce the increased hydraulic gradient at the central area of embankment.
Model tests were performed to investigate the failure modes in embankments on soft ground supported by piles with cap beams. In the model tests, Jumunjin standard sand was placed on simulated cap beams and soft ground. The cap beams are placed perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the embankment. The colored sand and the Jmniin standard sand were placed one after the other above cap beams and soft ground to make lateral stripes with 3mm thickness in the embarkment. The colored sand was prepared by coating the Jumunjin sand with black lead powder. The photographs illustrate the two characteristic modes of failure in embarkments. One is the soil arching failure and the other is the punching shear failure. The failure mode depends on the height of embankment and the space between cap beams. That is, if the embankment is high enough compared with the space between cap beams, it will fail in arching failure. On the other hand if the embarkment is relatively low or the space between piles is too wide, it will fail in punching shear failure. The soil arching develops in embarkment as a semicylindrical arch with a thickness equal to the width of the cap beam. And the soil wedge developed above the cap beams remains intact during both arching and punching failures. The boundary of punching shear failure of the displaced soil mass can be defined on the basis of observation of the photographs.

Reinforced Soil Wall has several merits comparing with conventional retaining wall. The conventional method has the limit of wall height, ununiform settlement of the foundation ground, quality assurance of the embankment body, shortening of construction period, economical construction and so on. Basis of previous mentioned things reinforced soil wall is the substitutional method of conventional retaining wall and its necessity is continuously increasing. The embanking material used in reinforced soil wall is generally limited such as a good quality sandy soil, and in many case constructors have to transfer such a good embanking material from far away to construction site. As a result, they would pressed by time and economy. If poor soils could be used embanking material, for example, clayey soil produced in-situ by cutting and excavation, the economical merit of reinforced soil wall would be increased more and more. Likewise, a lot of study about laboratory experimental behavior of reinforced soil wall using a good quality soil is being performed, but is rare study about clayey soil containing much volume of fine particle relatively in korea. In this study, the authors investigated behavior of the geosynthetic reinforced and unreinforced soil walls using clayey soil as embanking material in view of horizontal movement of walls, bearing capacity and reinforcement stress.

Two dimensional steady and unsteady numerical models are applied to bend reaches of the Lower Han River and the superelevation at the Ichon-Banpo bend area of Han River was observed. The flow characteristics in the meandering river are complicated due to the effects of the centrifugal force. The centrifugal force makes the outside water surface level increase and the outside velocity decrease. To study this complex flow studying two dimensional flow is important and useful to design flood control countermeasures, the analysis of sedimentation and the site selection of intake structures. Especially, the superelevation between inside and outside of the bend should be considered to determine the height of embankment. In this study, the water surface elevations in both bank sides of the bend were measured in two reaches during floods in 2007 and 2008. And then the two-dimensional simulation using RMA-2 model was carried out. The upstream and downstream boundary conditions on bend reaches were determined by FLDWAV which is one-dimensional unsteady model. Finally, the observed data are compared with simulation results and the results of the several superelevation formulas, and the flow characteristics of the bend are discussed.
The purpose of this study is to examine the consolidation characteristics of waste landfill from sodium carbonate production. The waste lime is a byproduct from the production of soda ash. The consolidation settlement of waste lime landfill was determined for waste lime specimen which obtained from the field boring. The consolidation tests are conducted for determination of the primary and secondary consolidation settlements. The waste lime is classified as an organic soil with high plasticity. As a result of an organic content test, the contents of organic matter in waste lime is much higher than that of normal clay. Finally, the total consolidation settlement of waste lime landfill is calculated by using a theoretical method and computer program for the given initial void ratio, compression index, and embankment height.

The soil test data of 28 earth dams, scheduled to be constructed in Kore3, were selected for this study. The safety factors of their side slops were computed using Fellenius' "slice Method" by computer. The results summarized in this study are as follows; 1. Dam sections can be easily determined by fig.10 without a time consuming trial and error calculations of assumed sections. 2. For the economical design of earth dam sections, it was found that more cohesive soil was suitable for lower dams(dam height less than 25m) and soils with a higher friction angle was better for higher dams 3. In the case that used soil materials have the same Internal friction angle, side slope increase was almost same. 4. The relationship between side slope and friction angle was found as log.S=a tan ø+b (Fig. 7) 5. The relationship between side slope and cohesion (c) was also found as log. S=a c+b (Fig. 8) 6. The change of safety factors due to the change of central core materials was very little (Table-2) 7. The decrease of safety factors according to the unit weight increase of embankment materials was negligible. 8. In general the relationship between the wet unit weight and the saturated unit weight was r sat = (rt)$^2$+0. 140. This study will contribute to the determination of economic and safe planning and designing of earth dams, embankments and cutting side slopes.
