  • In this paper, we design a programming education model that uses emotional intelligence and apply the model to programming education in elementary school. In our previous work, we found that there is a meaningful correlation between emotional intelligence and programming ability. In this paper, as a follow-up study, we design a programming education model based on a storytelling model and emotional intelligence. In order to test the performance of the proposed model, we applied our proposed model to the 5th grade elementary school students who have no programming experience. Based on extensive survey work and statistical analysis, we found that the experimental group by the programming education using the emotional intelligence got a statistically significant higher achievement than the comparative group by the traditional programming education. We hope that our model will be helpful in programming education in schools.

  • This study investigates the contents of programming education in elementary information education textbooks in Busan and Zhejiang. Two textbooks identify the contents of elementary school information education textbooks on setting goals of programming education, selecting educational programming languages, and selecting and developing contents of programming education. Textbooks in the two regions are designed to select programming languages for elementary school levels and to select creative learning topics to help learners learn programming in the process of solving problems themselves. The textbooks identified in this study are designed so that learners can learn programming naturally in the process of solving problems.

  • This study investigates the effectiveness of computer programming with KODU on problem-solving abilities of elementary school students. Diverse tools were developed for novice programmers to become more easy and comfort in learning a computer programming. Among them, KODU has focused on facilitating the programming of various multimedia applications to create games, animations and music videos etc. It is expected that KODU will help elementary school students to improve their problem-solving abilities through creating their own games, animation, and music etc. In this paper, we developed the educational program using KODU for teaching the elementary school students. The developed programming course was offered at the 5th grade students of a elementary school in Seoul and a total of 27 elementary school students were participated in our programming courses. Most of the students stated that the course was interesting, and their problem-solving ablilities were improved after the course from March 2014 through May 2014.

  • The software education to elementary students will be conducted from 2019. One of highlights of software education is a programming experience. It requires a higher level of programming education to students that are interested in programming. This problem can be solved by the club activities. But the materials for programming education for elementary students is not much. Therefore, we developed a programming material for club activities of the elementary school. We did not develop it as a programming manual. The students can understand a problem, can design through decomposition and abstraction processes, and can write a program when they are learning with this material. As a result, we expect that they can enhance their computational thinking abilities. We proved that our material is suitable for elementary students through a demonstration class. Therefore, we expect that our development methodologies for the material for programming education will contribute to develop a material for programming education.

  • In this paper, we propose an effective software education donation model for the social care class. The types of software education for elementary, middle, and high school for the social care class are in the order of after school classes, club activities, creative experiences, and regular classes. In elementary school students, it is effective to precede visual programming education based on block coding and to conduct curriculum convergence with SW and HW at the beginning, and high school students are carrying out text programming education like Python. Software education for social care class The contribution activity model can be classified into five types such as geographically difficult area, multicultural family areas, orphanage, reformatory, and basic livelihood security recipient. In addition, the survey results show that the students' interest in software education and their satisfaction are all very high at 96%. Effective software education for the social care class In the donation model, the lecturers consist of responsible professors, lecturers, and assistant instructors. Software training for the social care class is effective on a year-by-year basis, so that students can feel authenticity and trust. Software education contents focus on visual programming and physical computing education in elementary or middle school, and text programming and physical computing education in high school. It is necessary to construct a software education donor matching system that helps efficient management of software education donations by efficiently matching schools (consumers: elementary, middle, high school) and software education donors(suppliers).

  • Since 2008, it has been stipulated to conduct programming education for grade 5 and 6 elementary school student. However, it is the reality that the plans and studies for this are seriously lacking until now. The objective of this study is to propose a programming education utilizing robots as a plan to overcome limitations of existing programming education, find the problems through developing and applying education program for general elementary school students. As a result of experimental application of the developed program, since the gap of academic accomplishment for the robot programming is large for each student, it is necessary to develop education program to enable individual studies of each level and operate program with the focus on programming education rather than the robot. Moreover, it is pointed that the difficult and unnecessary elements in the robot programming course must be improved or reduced, it is better to exercise it on the grade 6 program for concentration on the programming education, and there should be improvement on equipment, environment for robot programming.

  • As we have entered into the 21st century knowledge and information society, the necessity of computer education has emerged and even its expectation is getting bigger. In spite of that, the present computer education neglects computer programming education which may be the basis of information, as understanding it only as the ability to utilize computer that deals with the usage of application program. Through the programming experience, students are likely tn understand abstract concepts on computer hardware, and to acquire knowledge needed tn solve problems given to them through computer. In this paper, on the basis of the significance and necessity in programming education, using a questionnaire, analyzed the necessity in programming education based upon responses of elementary school teachers to investigate the recognition analysis of elementary school teachers about programming education in elementary schools.

  • This study shows how to impact on programming learning using Scratch by the learning style. Firstly, students were classified by learning styles test using the VARK questionnaire. After one semester of programming education, correlation with learning styles and various instructional factors was analyzed. Scratch-based programming education improves the cognitive effectiveness and learning satisfaction for elementary school students. Especially students with visual preference performed better on programming education based on Scratch statistically. As a result, the process of programming must be mainly considered in programming education.

  • In this paper, to instruct elementary programming concepts based on flowchart programming for elementary school students, we proposed sensor-based elementary robot programming PBL problems using line-tracer robots. Proposed PBL problems are designed to have various correct-answer algorithms. For this purpose, we present PBL-based robot programming instruction steps. Through applying the proposed sensor-based PBL problems using line-tracer robots, experimental results are analyzed in views of the problem-solving ability and suitability of allocating degrees of difficulties to the proposed elementary robot programming problems.

  • As part of recent SW education methods, entry sites have been used in all practical textbooks in elementary schools. However, they are all learning block-type programming languages, making it difficult to produce programs that can be used in everyday life. This study is a study on the effects of learning programming using entry python on logical thinking ability and programming interest in elementary school students. Logical thinking ability and programming interest tests were conducted before and after the 8th class. Before and after classes, logical thinking ability score rose from an average of 6.6 to 9.4 and programming interests score also rose from an average of 46.7 to 59.1. This results in programming learning using Entry Python is significant for enhancing the logical thinking ability and programming interest of elementary school students.
