Polarization measurements were peformed to investigate the electrochemical behavior of copper ions and limiting current density in waste rinse water from copper electroplating processes. A newly designed cyclone type electrolyzer was tested to recover the copper powder. Synthetic solutions were prepared using analytical grade $CuSO_4$ to the desired waste water concentration and pH was adjusted with $H_2$$SO_4$. Electrowinning was peformed at room temperature and the solution was cycled with a pump. Results showed that more than 99 percent of Cu was recovered and the size of the recovered Cu powder ranges from 0.1 - $0.5\mu\textrm{m}$. The chemical composition of the Cu powder mainly consists of $Cu_2$O and Cu and can be easily reduced to pure Cu powder.
A study on the separation of heavy metals such as iron, copper, zinc and nickel from electroplating waste water has been investigated. The results showed that the PC-88A was more effective extractant for the extraction of zinc and the efficiency of zinc was to be about 100% at pH 2.5. And copper and nickel were extracted about 100% at pH 2 and more than 90% at pH 4~5 with LIX 84, respectively. On the other hand, in the case of solvent extraction of electroplating waste water(Acid-Alkali type) containing heavy metals, the ferric ion was first extracted at pH 2∼2.5 with 20% Naphthenic acid or 10% Versatic acid-10. And then, copper and zinc were extracted at pH 2 with 3% LIX 84 and at pH 2.5∼3 with 20% PC-88A respectively, remaining nickel in the raffinate. In this manner, the heavy metals in electroplating waste water could be effectively separated with solvent extraction method.
Suitability of aluminium-based water treatment sludge (WTS), a waste product from water treatment facilities, was assessed for removal of heavy metals from an electroplating wastewater which had high concentrations of copper and chromium along with other heavy metals. Batch tests with simulated wastewater in single- and multi-metal solutions indicated the influence of initial pH and WTS dose on removal of six metals namely Cu(II), Co(II), Cr(VI), Hg(II), Pb(II) and Zn(II). In general, removal of cationic metals such as Pb(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) increased with increase in pH while that of anionic Cr(VI) showed a reduction with increased pH values. Tests with multi-metal solution showed that the influence of competition was more pronounced at lower WTS dosages. Column test with diluted (100 times) real electroplating wastewater showed complete removal of copper up to 100 bed volumes while chromium removal ranged between 78-92%. Other metals which were present in lower concentrations were also effectively removed. Mass balance for copper and chromium showed that the WTS media had Cu(II) and Cr(VI) sorption capacities of about 1.7 and 3.5 mg/g of dried sludge, respectively. The study thus indicates that WTS has the potential to be used as a filtration/adsorption medium for removal of metals from metal-bearing wastewaters.

This study concernes the decomposition of cyanide ion in electroplating plant wastewater and COD variation of photodeveloping wastewater under various conditions. Determinations of CN- concentration were carried out by AgNO$_3$ titration method. The sample solutions were pretreated by passing ozone and decompositions were checked as a function of time for ozone treatment. Analysis of film developing wastewater was carried out by KMnO$_4$ method. Electroplating plant wastewater was also examined at various pH; decomposition rate of cyanide ion was found to increase at higher pH. Time required for the decomposition could be shortened by removing the heavy metal ions under alkaline condition. The effect of temperature on decomposition was studied at 40$^{\circ}$ and 60$^{\circ}C$. The result was better at 40$^{\circ}C$ although time for decomposition was almost same at both temperatures. Analysis of film developing wastewater revealed that COD decrease was faster during the first 1 to 2 hours. However, further decrease could not be effected. The existence of unknown special organics resistant to the decomposition was believed to be the reason.

The determination of the effectiveness of the immobilization of blasting dust (waste generated in galvanic activities) in cement matrix, as well of mechanical, physical and microstructural properties of concrete paving blocks produced with partial replacement of cement was the objective of this work. The results showed that blasting dust has high percentage of silica in the composition and very fine particle size, characteristics that qualify it for replacement of cement in manufacturing concrete blocks. The replacement of Portland cement by up to 5% residues did not cause a significant loss in compressive strength nor increase in water absorption of the blocks. Chemical tests indicated that there is no problem of leaching or solubilization of contaminants to the environment during the useful life of the concrete blocks, since the solidification/stabilization process led to the immobilization of waste in the cement mass. Therefore, the use of blasting dust in the manufacture of concrete paving blocks is promising, thus being not only an alternative for proper disposal of such waste as well as a possibility of saving raw materials used in the construction industry.
Steel industry which has been accomplishes the base of our country economy, automobile and electronic industry are taking charge of the role, whose electroplating is important. Large amount of wastewater and various metal salts, including hazardous materials was generated from the electroplating pre-treatment, plating, washing and post-plating. Currently, the general wastewater follows in the environmental law and neutralization after controlling, sludge where the various metal is mixed reclaims below multiple regulative and trust it is controlling. The sludge which includes the gas price metal reclaims in the field and trust it controls. a reclamation price of land it is insufficient but and the control expense holds plentifully and it loses the gas price metal which is valuable. Consequently, The research regarding to recover a gas price metal actively from this waste water, it is advanced. A new method to recover valuable metals from electroplating wastewater synthesis of metal sulfides using topical methods utilizing iron oxidizing bacteria, reagent of sulfides and solvent extraction using an organic solvent, such as the development of the law to recover these metals and metal sulfides of wastewater using selective recovery have been studied. By using these wastewater treatment method under frequency above 95%, it has been obtained the valuable metal from the wastewater, where the metal ion of Fe, Cu, Zn and Ni complexes was mixed. As we discuss the wastewater, which has been discharged from electroplating process, it is important and will be applied to the resources of metal in the urban mine.

When copper alloy is used in etching process for the production of lead frame, the high concentration of heavy metals, such as iron, nickel and zinc may be included in the etching waste. Those etching waste is classified as a specified one. Therefore a customized design was designed for the purification process of the lead frame etching waste liquid containing high concentrations of heavy metals for the production of an electroplating copper(II) oxide. Since the lead frame etching waste solution contains highly concentrated heavy metal species, an ion exchange method is difficult to remove all heavy metals. In this study, a copper(I) chloride was manufactured by using water solubility difference related to the reduction-oxidation method followed by the reunion of copper(II) chloride using sodium sulfate as an oxidant. The hydrazine was chosen as a reducing agent. The optimum added amount was 1.4 mol per 1.0 mol of copper. In the case of removal of heavy metals by using the combination of reduction-oxidation and ion exchange resin methods, 4.3 ppm of $Fe^{3+}$, 2.4 ppm of $Ni^{2+}$ and 0.78 ppm of $Zn^{2+}$ can be reused as raw materials for electroplating copper(II) oxide when repeated three times.
A Study on the precipitation characteristics of nickel hydroxide as well as carbonate and sulfide is carried out to determine the proper treatment condition of the wastewater induced from nickel-plating industry. The nickel concentrations in the effluent could be kept lower than 5ppm when the value of pH was maintained higher than 10. The precipitation of nickel salts by alkaline addition to the nickel containing model wastewater was conducted by using proper amount of sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate and sodium sulfide. In case of the sulfide treatment, the residual nickel concentration in the clear water after precipitates removed showed the lowest value. The influences of the precipitation condition upon the particle size of the crystals precipitated were also investigated. In spite of the various precipitation conditions were adopted, the particle size of the precipitated crystals showed no great differences. The sedimentation rates of the precipitated particle bed were observed and the free sedimentation period was terminated within 20 minutes. Although the hindered sedimentation as well as bed compaction progressed subsequently, the bed heights were maintained almost the same level after two hours of sedimentation.

Wastewater discharged by industrial activities of metal finishing and electroplating units is often contaminated by a variety of toxic or otherwise harmful substances which have a negative effects on the water environment. The treatment method of heavy metal-cyanide complexes wastewater by alkaline chlorination have already well-known($1^{st}$ Oxidation: pH 10, reaction time 30 min, ORP 350 mV, $2^{nd}$ Oxidation: ORP 650 mV). In this case, the efficiency for the removal of ferro/ferri cyanide by this general alkaline chlorination is very high as 99%. But the permissible limit of Korean waste-water discharge couldn't be satisfied. The initial concentration of cyanide was 374 mg/L(the Korean permissible limit of cyanide is 1.0 mg/L max.). So a particular focus was given to the treatment of heavy metal-cyanide complexes wastewater by $Zn^{+2}/Fe^{+2}$ ion and coprecipitation after alkaline chlorination. And we could meet the Korean permissible limit of cyanide(the final concentration of cyanide: 0.30 mg/L) by $Zn^{+2}/Fe^{+2}$ ion and coprecipitation(reaction time: 30 min, pH: 8.0, rpm: 240). The removal of Chromium ion by reduction(pH: 2.0 max, ORP: 250 mV) and the precipitation of metal hydroxide(pH: 9.5) is treated as 99% of removal efficiency. The removal of Copper and Nickel ion has been treated by $Na_2S$ coagulation-flocculation as 99% min of the efficiency(pH: $9.09\sim10.0$, dosage of $Na_2S:0.5\sim3.0$ mol). It is important to note that the removal of ferro/ferri cyanide of heavy metal-cyanide complexes wastewater should be employed by $Zn^{+2}/Fe^{+2}$ ion and coprecipitation as well as the alkaline chlorination for the Korean permissible limit of waste-water discharge.
