Ion channels are important targets of anthelmintic agents. In this study, we identified 3 types of ion channels in Ascaris suum tissue incorporated into planar lipid bilayers using an electrophysiological technique. The most frequent channel was a large-conductance cation channel (209 pS), which accounted for 64.5% of channels incorporated (n=60). Its open-state probability (Po) was ~0.3 in the voltage range of -60~+60 mV. A substate was observed at 55% of the main-state. The permeability ratio of Cl- to K+ (PCl/PK) was ~0.5 and PNa/PK was 0.81 in both states. Another type of cation channel was recorded in 7.5% of channels incorporated (n=7) and discriminated from the large-conductance cation channel by its smaller conductance (55.3 pS). Its Po was low at all voltages tested (~0.1). The third type was an anion channel recorded in 27.9% of channels incorporated (n=26). Its conductance was 39.0 pS and PCl/PK was 8.6±0.8. Po was ~1.0 at all tested potentials. In summary, we identified 2 types of cation and 1 type of anion channels in Ascaris suum. Gating of these channels did not much vary with voltage and their ionic selectivity is rather low. Their molecular nature, functions, and potentials as anthelmintic drug targets remain to be studied further.

Background and Objectives: The present study aims to investigate whether the cochlear implant electrode array design affects the electrophysiological and psychophysical measures. Subjects and Methods: Eighty five ears were used as data in this retrospective study. They were divided into two groups by the electrode array design: lateral wall type (LW) and perimodiolar type (PM). The electrode site was divided into three regions (basal, medial, apical). The evoked compound action potential (ECAP) threshold, T level, C level, dynamic range (DR), and aided air conduction threshold were measured. Results: The ECAP threshold was lower for the PM than for the LW, and decreased as the electrode site was closer to the apical region. The T level was lower for the PM than for the LW, and was lower on the apical region than on the other regions. The C level on the basal region was lower for the PM than for the LW whereas the C level was lower on the apical region than on the other regions. The DRs on the apical region was greater for the PM than for the LW whereas the DR was narrower on the apical region than on the other regions. The aided air conduction threshold was not different for the electrode design and frequency. Conclusions: The current study would support the advantages of the PM over the LW in that the PM had the lower current level and greater DR, which could result in more localized neural stimulation and reduced power consumption.

Mills' syndrome is rare clinical syndrome described in 1900 by Mills, namely ascending (or less often, descending) progressive hemiplegia. Mills' syndrome could be considered as a variant of primary lateral sclerosis (PLS) or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), but is still controversial. According to clinical course, imaging and electrophysiological findings, our case is more compatible with Mills' syndrome rather than PLS or ALS. To our knowledge, this is the first report of Mills' syndrome in Korea.
The sixty two-year-old woman was admitted with facial diplegia and ataxic gait. Neurological examination revealed areflexia and sensory ataxia with decreased sensation of position and vibration in both lower extremities. Electrophysiologic study suggest motor dominant demyelinating polyneuropathy and bilateral facial neuropathy. CSF study revealed no cells and increased proteins. After intravenous immunoglobulin therapy, sensory ataxia and electrophysiological study had markedly improved for 3 months.
Transgenic mice models of Alzheimer's disease were produced by overexpressing APP(amyloid precursor protein) mutant and presenilin mutant genes using the promotors that induced neuronal expression. The neuropathologies, electrophysiological changes and behavioral changes that were demonstrated in these transgenic mice models were amyloid changes, gliotic changes, A-beta increases, deficit in LTP(long-term potentiation) and behavioral changes. Some or all of the above changes were found in each transgenic mice model. These models generally showed amyloid neuropathology but they usually lacked the neurofibrillary tangles. So, they can be regarded as partial models of Alzheimer's disease. The development of them is undoubtedly the great progress toward future research.

We investigated the physiological patterns of cybersickness in a Virtual Reality(VR). Subject were exposed to the VR for 9.5 min, and required to detect specific virtual objects. Sixteen electrophysiological signals were recorded before, during, and after the virtual navigation. five questionnaires on the VR experience were acquired form 61 healthy subjects. During the virtual navigation, subjects with the high cybersickness susceptibility showed significant physiological changes, which included increased gastric tachyarrhythmia, eyeblink frequency, and EEG delta wave and decreased EEG beta wave. These results suggest that cybersickness may induce or accompany the changes in central nervous system and autonomic nervous system. Also, these results suggest that there may be increased sympathetic activation in autonomic drive for cybersickness.
A new cell-cross bridge mechanics model is proposed to analyze the mechanics of heart muscle. Electrophysiology of a cardiac cell is numerically approximated using the previous model of human ventricular myocyte. Ion transports across cell membrane initiated by action potential induce excitation-contraction mechanism in the cell via cross bridge dynamics. Negroni and Lascano model (NL model) is employed to compute the tension of cross bridge closely related to ion dynamics in cytoplasm.
Electrophysiological recordings are considered a reliable method of assessing a person's alertness. Sleep medicine is asked to offer objective methods to measure daytime alertness, tiredness and sleepiness. As EEG signals are non-stationary, the conventional method of frequency analysis is not highly successful in recognition of alertness level. In this paper, EEG signals have been analyzed using wavelet transform as well as discrete wavelet transform and classification using statistical classifiers such as euclidean and mahalanobis distance classifiers and a promising method SVM (Support Vector Machine). As a result of simulation, the average values of accuracies for the Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA)-Quadratic, k-Nearest Neighbors (k-NN)-Euclidean, and Linear SVM were 48%, 34.2%, and 86%, respectively. The experimental results show that SVM classification method offer the better performance for reliable classification of the EEG signal in comparison with the other classification methods.
Junctional neurulation represents the most recent adjunct to the well-known sequential embryological processes of primary and secondary neurulation. While its exact molecular processes, occurring at the end of primary and the beginning of secondary neurulation, are still being actively investigated, its pathological counterpart -junctional neural tube defect (JNTD)- had been described in 2017 based on three patients whose well-formed secondary neural tube, the conus, is widely separated from its corresponding primary neural tube and functionally disconnected from corticospinal control from above. Several other cases conforming to this bizarre neural tube arrangement have since appeared in the literature, reinforcing the validity of this entity. The cardinal clinical, neuroimaging, and electrophysiological features of JNTD, and the hypothesis of its embryogenetic mechanism, form part of this review.
