Establishment of Optimum Deposition Time in Electrophoretic Deposition

  • We used the electrophoretic deposition (EPD) process to fabricate a glass composite and investigated the EPD parameters to find the optimum deposition time by understanding the relationship among the process parameters of zeta potential (ZP), pH, deposition yield and saturation point. A binder and a dispersing agent were mixed properly with glass frit ($0.2{\sim}25{\mu}m$, d50=$8.77{\mu}m$) in an ethyl alcohol medium for the preparation of the slurry. The pH and ZP were in an inverse relationship to each other due to the generation of $H_3O^+$ ions with the addition of the dispersing agent in the slurry. The acidic nature of the dispersing agent was resulted in a decrease of the pH and an increase of the ZP. Otherwise, the pH increased with the addition of the glass frit in the slurry because $H_3O^+$ ions were absorbed on the glass frit. Therefore, the $OH^-$ ions correspondingly increased. The saturation point of EPD was strongly correlated with the variation of the pH in the slurry; this is caused by a chemical reaction between the ethyl alcohol and the ions that make up the glass frit. An adjustment of the pH variation and the saturation point in the slurry can be established with respect to the optimum deposition time in the slurry.

  • In electrophoresis, it is studied to get best condition of suspension media with alcoholic system for superconducting film. High-temperature superconductor films of $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-x}$ were fabricated by electrophoretic deposition(EPD) from alcohol-based suspension. Maximum stability is observed for the suspension containing iso-alcohol as dispersion medium. However, for the formation of a dense and adherent coating of YBCO on a silver substrate by EPD. the best results were obtained in mixing PrOH and BuOH suspension. The superconducting critical current density($J_c$) was $1,200A/cm^2$ for the films deposited in 30% iso-PrOH and 70 % iso-BuOH suspension.

Formation of a Carbon Interphase Layer on SiC Fibers Using Electrophoretic Deposition and Infiltration Methods

  • This study examined carbon layer coating on silicon carbide (SiC) fibers by utilizing solid-state and wet chemistry routes to confer toughness to the fiber-reinforced ceramic matrix composites, as an alternative to the conventional pyrolytic carbon (PyC) interphase layer. Electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of carbon black nanoparticles using both AC and DC current sources, and the vacuum infiltration of phenolic resin followed by pyrolysis were tested. Because of the use of a liquid phase, the vacuum infiltration resulted in more uniform and denser carbon coating than the EPD routes with solid carbon black particles. Thereafter, vacuum infiltration with controlled variation in phenolic resin concentration, as well as the iterations of infiltration steps, was improvised to produce a homogeneous carbon coating having a thickness of several hundred nanometers on the SiC fiber. Conclusively, it was demonstrated that the carbon coating on the SiC fiber could be achieved using a simpler method than the conventional chemical vapor deposition technique.

  • Alumina-silica composite coating layers were prepared by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of plate-shaped alumina particles dispersed in a sol-gel binder, which was prepared by hydrolysis and the condensation reaction of methyltrimethoxysilane in the presence of colloidal silica. The microstructure and the electrical and thermal properties of the coatings were compared according to the EPD process parameter: voltage, time and the content of the plate-shaped alumina particles. The electrical insulation property of the coatings was measured by a voltage test. The coatings were prepared by EPD of the sol-gel binder with 5-30 wt% plate alumina particles on parallel electrodes at a distance of 2 cm for 1-10 min under an applied voltage of 10-30 V. The coatings experienced increased breakdown voltage with increasing thickness. However, the higher the thickness was, the smaller the breakdown voltage strength was. A breakdown voltage as high as 4.6 kV was observed with a $400{\mu}m$ thickness, and a breakdown voltage strength as high as 27 kV/mm was achieved for the sample under a $100{\mu}m$ thickness.

  • Electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of alcohol YBCO suspensions on the Ag wire electrode is studied. Poly(ethylene glycol) was coordinated to a structure formed by the EPD process with YBCO particles. The suspension is characterized in terms of zeta potential and conductivity. The d.c electric fields of 200-300 V/cm are applied for 1-10 min. The optimal condition for the EPD allows modifying the properties and microstructure of the deposited films. Superconducting coatings with nanometer-sized pores and a preferred orientation along the c-axis were prepared from the result with chemically modified precursor solution. In contrast, YBCO coatings of submicrometer-sized pores and randomly orientated grains were prepared from the solution without PEG.

  • 전착법(EPD)에 의한 음극지지형 SOFC 단전지용 전해질 제조를 위하여 NiO-YSZ 다공성 기판 위에 극성이 서로 다른 전착용액을 사용하여 안정화 지르코니아 균일막 형성을 위한 전착조건과 막특성을 조사하였다. 알콜계 용액과는 달리 수계 용액에서 정전류, 0.138mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$이상에서 전극반응으로 생성한 기포에 의한 막결함이 생성하였으며 막무게 증가율이 감소하였다. 균일막 형성은 알콜계 용액에서 전극반응없이 안정한 전압특성을 보이는 정전류 0.035 mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$를 10초간 인가하였을 때 얻어졌다.

Binder-free Sn/Graphene Nanocomposites Prepared by Electrophoretic Deposition for Anode Materials in Lithium Ion Batteries

  • Nanocomposites consisting of Sn nanoparticles and graphene oxide (GO) were electrophoretically deposited onto Cu current collectors that was used for anodes in Li ion batteries (LIBs). In order to optimize the electrochemical performance of nanocomposites as an anode material by controlling the oxygen functionality, the GO was subjected to $O_3$ treatment prior to electrophoretic deposition (EPD). During thermal reduction of the GO in the nanocomposites, the Sn nanoparticles were reduced in size, along with the formation of SnO and/or $SnO_2$ at a small fraction, relying on the oxygen functionalities of the GO. The variation in the duration of time for the $O_3$ irradiation resulted in a small change in total oxygen content, but in a significantly different fraction of each functional group in the GO, which influenced the Sn nanoparticle size and the amount of SnO (and/or $SnO_2$). As a result, the EPD films prepared with the GO that possessed the least amount of carboxylic groups (made by treating GO in an $O_3$ environment for 3 h) showed the best performance, when compared with the nanocomposites composed of untreated GO or GO that was $O_3$-treated for a duration of less than 3 h.

EFFECT of PREPARATION METHODS and CONDITIONS of PRECURSORS on the PROPERTIES of $BATIO_3$ ALKOXIDE FILMS

  • Usually for the commercial preparation of barium titanate films or ceramics the reaction atmosphere must be preferably in air. However, normally air is not used because it contains carbon dioxide, which can easily react with barium to form the undesired product barium carbonate, leading to unwanted second-phase formation in the (mal stages of the process. In the present work a series of perovskite barium titanate films was prepared by the sol-gel method, using a metal alkoxide solutions in the electrophoretic deposition (EPD). The influence of several process parameters, like sintering temperature of sol preparation before EPD and heat-treatment temperature and non-oxidized atmosphere, on the film properties is described.

  • This dissertation describes an optimization method for fabricating thick films with superconducting YBCO powders by electrophoresis technique. The lateral alternating applied voltage caused to shake the superconducting powder vertically to the deposition field during the process of the oriented deposition so that it was deposited along the c-axis on the silver tape with shaky-aligned EPD. As the result, the optimized thin film fabrication method was obtained to get more dense and uniform surface morphology as well as the improved critical current density. For commercial utilization and efficiency, in this dissertation, alternating voltage of 25-120 V/cm in frequency of 60Hz was proposed to apply it as a subsidiary source for shaky-flow deposition so that the fabricated thin film showed uniform surface morphology with less voids and cracks and $T_{c.zero}$ of 90 K and the critical current density of $3419A/cm^2$.
