In this study, Nano-geosynthetics with electroosmosis method was used and tried to verify the possibility of usage for soft ground improvement. Electroosmosis tests were performed with increasing the voltage level and changing distance between electrodes. The electrokinetic cell was assembled and a Nano-geosynthetics was inserted into the plastic drain board. And electroosmosis was applied to the disturbed kaolin clay. In order to study the effects of ground improvement, ground settlement, water content, collected pore water and shear strength were compared and analyzed with non-applied kaolin clay. Also, the electroosmosis tests were performed with changing the distance between electrodes and the voltage size. As a results of changing the distance and voltage between electrodes, the more voltage size was increased, the more the settlement of ground, shear strength and collected pore water were increased. As the distance between electrodes were increased, the settlement of ground, shear strength, water content and collected pore water were decreased. Finally, Nano-geosynthetics as a material of electrode have the sufficient potential to improve soft ground.
The present microbial reinforcement of rock and soil exhibits limitations, such as uneven reinforcement effectiveness and low calcium carbonate generation rate, resulting in limited solidification strength. This study introduces electroosmosis as a standard microbial grouting reinforcement technique and investigates its solidification effects on microbial-reinforced uranium tailings. The most effective electroosmosis effect on uranium tailings occurs under a potential gradient of 1.25 V/cm. The findings indicate that a weak electric field can effectively promote microbial growth and biological activity and accelerate bacterial metabolism. The largest calcium carbonate production occurred under the gradient of 0.5 V/cm, featuring a good crystal combination and the best cementation effect. Staged electroosmosis and electrode conversion efficiently drive the migration of anions and cations. Under electroosmosis, the cohesion of uranium tailings reinforced by microorganisms increased by 37.3% and 64.8% compared to those reinforced by common microorganisms and undisturbed uranium tailings, respectively. The internal friction angle is also improved, significantly enhancing the uniformity of reinforcement and a denser and stronger microscopic structure. This research demonstrates that MICP technology enhances the solidification effects and uniformity of uranium tailings, providing a novel approach to maintaining the safety and stability of uranium tailings dams.
The characteristics of electroosmosis drainage in clayey soil were investigated, when an electrokinetic technique was applied for the purpose of separating heavy metals in contaminated ground. A series of laboratory tests, considering voltage, zeta potential, pH distribution, and current, were performed for a lead-contaminated kaolin. The results of laboratory tests were compared with numerical analysis of finite difference method. The 1311owing conclusions were obtained: The flow velocity in electroosmosis was very sensitive to the chemical and electrical characteristics of the clay. As the concentration of ion increases, the flow rate decreases and the amount of drainage also decreases as time elapses.
In our previous work on levodopa delivery at pH 2.5 using iontophoresis, we found that cathodal delivery showed higher permeation than anodal delivery and electroosmosis plays more dominant role than electrorepulsion. In this work, we studied the transdermal transport of levodopa at very low pH (pH=1.0) where all levodopa molecules are cations, and evaluated some factors which affect the transdermal transport. The transport study at pH 2.5 was also conducted for comparison. The contribution of electrorepulsion and electroosmosis on flux was also evaluated. Using stable aqueous solution, the effect of electrode polarity, current density, current type and drug concentration on transport through skin were studied and the results were compared. We also investigated the iontophoretic flux from hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) hydrogel containing levodopa. In vitro flux study was performed at $33^{\circ}C$, using side-by-side diffusion cell. Full thickness hairless mouse skin were used. Current densities applied were 0.2, 0.4 or $0.6\;mA/cm^2$. Contrary to the pH 2.5 result, anodal delivery showed higher flux, indicating that electrorepulsion is the dominant force for the transport, overcoming the electroosmotic flow which is acting against the direction of electrorepulsion. Cumulative amount of levodopa transported was increased as the current density or drug concentration was increased. When amount of current dose was constant, continuous current was more beneficial than pulsed current in promoting levodopa permeation. Similar transport results were obtained when hydrogel was used as the donor phase. These results indicate that iontophoretic delivery of zwitterion such as levodopa is much complicated than that can be expected from small ionic molecules. The results also indicate that, only at very low pH like pH 1.0, electrorepulsion can be the dominant force over the electroosmosis in the levodopa transport.

In this study, it could be found that the microbial movement in soil under electric field mainly occurred by electrophoresis and electroosmosis. The contribution of electrophoresis on the microbial mobility and flux was generally higher than that of electroosmosis. In the electrokinetic(EK) bioremediation of a pentadecane-contaminated soil, the microbial population increased simultaneously at anode and cathode regions of the soil specimen because both electrophoresis and electroosmosis affected on the microbial movement. After initial operation, the microbial population was high in order of anode, middle, and cathode regions due to their negatively-charged surface and oxygen generation at anode. However, the uniform contaminant removal was achieved by the microbial movement with two-directionality.

Recently electrokinetic process is known to be a promising remediation technology for the contaminated soils with heavy metals, radionuclides, organic matters, and so on. The contaminants in electrokinetic technology are removed mainly by three mechanisms; electroosmosis, electromigration, and electrophoresis. When direct current is introduced between two electrodes planted in soil, a large amount of hydrogen ions is formed and moves from anode to cathode with the other cations contained in electrolyte. The water flow caused by tile movement of cations is called as electroosmosis. Especially for non-ionic pollutants, the electroosmotic flow(EOF) is the most important removal mechanism among them and transports contaminants from anode to cathode along the water flow. In this study, characteristics of electroosmotic flow was investigated according to the resistance state of soil. The decrease, maintenance, and increase of soil resistance could be obtained by controlling ions in soil. When the resistance of soil was decreasing or maintained, the EOF is proportional to electric current and voltage, respectively and when the resistance was increasing, the EOF is proportional to only electric current not voltage.
The objective of this work is to study transdermal delivery of levodopa using iontophoresis and evaluate various factors which affect the transdermal transport. Levodopa is unstable in aqueous solution, and, in order to establish a stable condition for levodopa for the duration of experiment, we investigated the stability of levodopa in aqueous solutions of different pHs with/without the addition of dextrose or the application of current. Using stable aqueous solution, we have studied the effect of pH, polarity and penetration enhancer (ethanol) on transdermal flux and compared the results. We also investigated the iontophoretic flux from hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) hydrogel. In vitro flux study was performed at $33^{\circ}C$, using side-by-side diffusion cell. Full thickness hairless mouse skin and rat skin were used for this work. Current densities applied were 0.4 or $0.6mA/cm^2$ and current was off after 6 hour application. Stability study showed that levodopa solution with a pH 2.5 or 4.5 maintained the initial concentration of levodopa for 24 hours with the addition of 5% dextrose. However, at pH 9.5, levodopa was unstable and 30 to 40% of levodopa degraded within 24 hours, even with the addition of 5% dextrose. Hydrogel swollen with dextrose added levodopa solution maintained about 97% of the initial concentration of levodopa for 13 days, when stored in $4^{\circ}C$. The application of current did not affect the stability of levodopa in hydrogel. Flux study from levodopa solution with pH 2.5 showed that cathodal delivery of levodopa was higher than passive or anodal delivery. When the pH of the donor solution was 4.5, anodal delivery of levodopa was higher than passive or cathodal delivery. These results seem to indicate that electroosmosis plays more dominant role than electrorepulsion in the flux of levodopa at pH 2.5, and the reverse situation applies for pH 4.5. The passive flux was unexpectedly high for the ionized levodopa. Similar to the results from aqueous solution, cumulative amount of levodopa transported trom HPC hydrogel by cathodal delivery was significantly higher than passive or anodal delivery. The treatment of 70% ethanol cotton ball by scrubbing increased passive, anodal and cathodal flux, with the largest increase for anodal flux. These results indicate that iontophoretic delivery of zwitterion such as levodopa is much complicated than that can be expected from small ionic molecules with single charge. The results also indicate that the balance between electroosmosis and electrorepulsion plays a very important role in the transport through skin.

This paper presents the transport and removal of organic substances from the contaminated soft soils and sludges such as marine dredging waste, marine sediments, mine tailing waste, and sewage sludge by electroosmosis. A series of laboratory experiments including variable conditions such as contamination levels, solid contents, and applied voltage rates were peformed with the contaminated soft clay specimen mixed with organic substance. Investigated are specimen density, dewatering rate, outflow rate, and outflow concentration. The test results showed that organic substances in the soils were removed by applied voltages. The results indicated that this process can be used efficiently to clean up the contaminated soil.
The induced-charge electroosmosis (ICEO) is a kind of electroosmotic flow which is generated by the electrical charge induced by an externally-applied electric field. That kind of electrokinetic phenomenon provides a nonmechanical technique to handle microscale flows and particles. In this work, we report that the ICEO-like flow is observed around two kinds of circular-cylindrical rod submerged in a dielectric liquid. The conductivity of the solution is varied by adding a surfactant. The flow field is visualized by the PIV method, and average flow speed shows a remarkable dependence on electrical input frequency. Interestingly, the characteristics of the flow are quite different from the conventional ICEO with respect to the flow direction and the locations of center of vortices.

Bending deformation of an ionic polymer actuator(IPA) on applied low electric field across its thickness is dominated by electroosmosis of hydrated ions and self-diffusion of free water molecules. In the study by Popovic et al., two processes are assumed to occur sequentially in the way that fast electroosmosis is followed by self-diffusion and finite element formulation for the basic field equations are proposed. However the motions of hydrated ions and water molecules occur at the same time. In this study, those two processes are considered simultaneously and finite element formulation is conducted for the basic field equations governing electrochemical response of an IPA. Some numerical studies for IPA are carried out in order to show the validity of the present formulation.
