  • We investigate the role of secondary electrons in galaxy clusters and in ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs). The radio emission in galaxy clusters and ULIGs is believed to be produced by the synchrotron radiation of relativistic electrons. Nonetheless, the sources of these relativistic electrons are still unclear. Relativistic secondary electrons can be produced from the hadronic interactions of cosmic-ray nuclei with the intra-cluster media (ICM) of galaxy clusters and the dense molecular clouds of ULIGs. We estimate the contribution of the secondary electrons in galaxy clusters and ULIGs by comparing observational results with theoretical calculations for the radio emission in these sources. We find that the radio halos of galaxy clusters can not be produced from the secondary electrons; on the other hand, at least for some ULIGs, the radio emission can be dominated by the synchrotron emission of the secondary electrons.

  • Merger shocks with Ms < ~ 3 - 4 have been detected in galaxy clusters through radio observations of synchrotron radiations emitted from cosmic-ray (CR) electrons. The CR electrons are believed to be produced by the so-called diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) at the merger shocks. To describe the acceleration of electrons, the injection into DSA has to be understood. Recent studies have showed that electrons could be energized through stochastic shock drift acceleration (SSDA), a mechanism mediated by multi-scale plasma waves at shock transition zone. However, such preacceleration process seems to be effective only at the supercritical shocks with Ms > ~ 2.3, implying that further studies should be done to explain radio relics with weaker shocks. In this talk, we present the results obtained by fully kinetic 2D particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations, which include pre-existing suprathermal electrons possibly ejected from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) or produced by previous episodes of turbulence/shocks. The simulations indicate that the pre-existing electrons enhance the upstream plasma waves in shocks with Ms < ~ 2.3. However, the wavelength of such waves is not long enough to scatter off suprathermal electrons and energize them to the injection momentum for DSA. Hence, we conclude that preexciting suprathermal electrons alone would not solve the problem of electron acceleration at radio relic shocks.

  • We demonstrate that the flux levels of post-storm relativistic electrons are well correlated with the amount of electrons of the energy about 100 keV injected during substorms, while the power of ULF is more or less related to the spectral hardening of these seed electrons. Hence, the existence of ULF alone during the storm time does not necessarily cause flux increase of relativistic electrons as storms do not always generate sufficient amount of seed electrons of this energy range. • This study introduces metal coating as an effective sample preparation method to remove charge-up caused by the shadow effect during field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) analysis of dynamic structured samples. During a FE-SEM analysis, charge-up occurs when the primary electrons (input electrons) that scan the specimens are not equal to the output electrons (secondary electrons, backscattered electrons, auger electrons, etc.) generated from the specimens. To remove charge-up, a metal layer of Pt, Au or Pd is applied on the surface of the sample. However, in some cases, charge-up still occurs due to the shadow effect. This study developed a coating method that effectively removes charge-up. By creating a converted sample stage capable of simultaneous tilt and rotation, the shadow effect was successfully removed, and image data without charge-up were obtained.

  • We study the two storm events of 1997: one in May that was accompanied by a relativistic electron event (REE) and the other in September, with a more profound Dst decrease, but with no significant flux increase of relativistic electrons. We find that a larger amount of seed electrons was present in the May event compared to that of the September storm, whereas the ULF (ultra low frequency) power was more enhanced and the particle spectrum was harder in the September event. Hence, we demonstrate that a larger storm does not necessarily produce more seed electrons and that the amount of seed electrons is an important factor in an actual increase in REE flux levels, while ULF can harden the particle spectra without causing an apparent REE.

  • Comprehensive Research Facility for Fusion Technology (CRAFT) is an integration of different demonstrating or testing facilities, which aim to develop the critical technology or composition system towards the fusion reactor. Due to the importance and challenge of the negative ion based neutral beam injection (NNBI), a NNBI test facility is included in the framework of CRAFT. The initial object of CRAFT NNBI test facility is to obtain a H0 beam power of 2 MW at the energy of 200-400 keV for the pulse duration of 100 s. Inside the negative ion accelerator of NNBI system, the interactions of the negative ions with the background gas and electrodes can generate abundant stray electrons. The stray electrons can be further accelerated and dumped on the electrodes or eject from the accelerator. The stray electrons, including the ejecting electrons, cause the unwanted particle and heat flux onto the electrodes and the inner components of beamline (especially the temperature sensitive cryopump). The suppression of the stray electrons from the CRAFT accelerator is carried out via a series of design and simulation works. The paper focuses the influence of different magnetic field configurations on the stray electrons and the character of the ejecting electrons.

  • The conversion efficiency of a cesium iodine coated micro-channel plate is studied. We use the EGS4 code to transport photons and generated electrons until their energies become less than 1keV and 10keV respectively. Among the generated electrons, the emission from the secondary electrons located within the escape depth of 56nm from the photo-converter boundary is estimated by integrating the product of the secondary electrons with a probability depending only on their geometric locations. The secondary electron emission from the generated electrons of energy higher than 100eV is estimated by the 'universal yield curve'. The sum of these provides an estimate for the secondary electron yield and we show that results of applying this algorithm agree with known experimental results. Using this algorithm, we computed secondary electron emissions from a micro-channel plate used in a gas electron multiplier detector that is currently being developed at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute.

  • We study the evolution of the energy spectrum of cosmic-ray electrons accelerated at spherically expanding shocks with low Mach numbers and the ensuing spectral signatures imprinted in radio synchrotron emission. Time-dependent simulations of diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) of electrons in the test-particle limit have been performed for spherical shocks with parameters relevant for typical shocks in the intracluster medium. The electron and radiation spectra at the shock location can be described properly by the test-particle DSA predictions with instantaneous shock parameters. However, the volume integrated spectra of both electrons and radiation deviate significantly from the test-particle power-laws, because the shock compression ratio and the flux of injected electrons at the shock gradually decrease as the shock slows down in time. So one needs to be cautious about interpreting observed radio spectra of evolving shocks based on simple DSA models in the test-particle regime.

  • The solar wind electrons are made of three or four distinct components, which are core Maxwellian background, isotropic halo, and super-halo (and sometimes, highly field-aligned strahl component which can be considered as a fourth element). We put forth a steady-state model for the solar wind electrons by considering both the steady-state particle and wave kinetic equations. Since the steady-state solar wind electron VDFs and the steady-state wave fluctuation spectrum are related to each other, we also investigate the complete fluctuation spectra in the whistler and Langmuir frequency ranges by considering halo- and superhalo-like model electron VDFs. It is found that the energetic electrons make important contributions to the total emission spectrum. Based on this, we complete the steady-state model by considering both the whistler and Langmuir fluctuations. In particular, the Langmuir fluctuation plays an important role in the formation and maintenance of nonthermal electrons.
