  • Electronic Travel Aids (ETA) developed for the blind such as sonicguide, mowat sensor and bionic C-5 laser cane have many problems like technical deficiency and high cost. Moreover, these systems have need for more training to perceive obstacle around. Therefore, In this study, we studied the blind's obstacle perception characteristics by human auditory sense, and development of ultrasonic ETA which have more simple usage, low cost and immediate usableness than present ETAs.

  • A travel aid system for the visually impaired person is proposed by providing the position and heading information. The position and heading information is obtained from range difference localization estimator, and the information is notified to the visually impaired person by using braille display system. For the precise estimation of the position and heading information, we apply recently developed linear localization estimator which utilizes the instrumental variable method and the state augmentation method. The estimation results are compared with well-known Kalman filter through experiment.

  • We have developed an electronic aids, called SmartWand, which can help visually impaired people walk safely and tell them an object's color and environmental brightness SmartWand can inform visually impaired people of the dangerous obstacles around which they can't notice by the white cane such as a large panel with supporting poles on the street. Especially we have lmproved the previous version of SmartWand by reflecting the result of user study.
