Electronic Theses and Dissertations' Development in University Libraries in Nigeria

  • The study was meant to examine electronic theses and dissertations' development in Nigerian federal university libraries. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. The study population comprised forty-eight institutional repository librarians in eighteen Nigerian federal university libraries. The sample consisted of forty three librarians. A questionnaire was used for data collection. The data collected were analyzed with mean and standard deviation. Findings reveal that the policies available for developing electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) in the libraries require submission of electronic copies of theses and dissertations by students, participation of digital/IR librarians in ETD development and provision of free access to ETDs; the libraries comply with standards of Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting and Search/Retrieval via URL using DSpace for building ETDs and taking advantage of such available ICT facilities as computers, scanners, CD-ROM, LAN, internet connectivity and printer. The libraries achieve ETD through digitisation, mandating submission of electronic versions of TDs by students and creation of IR. However, the process is hindered by technological obsolescence, financial problems, absence of clearly-defined ETD development policy, required ICT facilities and trained staff, copyright, irregular power supply and unstable internet connectivity. This study represents a fresh empirical investigation into electronic theses and dissertations' development in federal university libraries in Nigeria.

  • 전통적으로 학위논문은 우수한 학술 정보적 가치를 내포하고 있음에도 불구하고 물리적 이용가능성의 부재로 인하여 평가 절하되어 왔다. 이를 해소하려면 전자형 학위논문시스템의 개발이 필요하며, 그것은 정보탐색 과정에서 연구결과를 배포하는 기본 채널로 그리고 학위논문이 핵심자료임을 인식시키는 계기를 제공할 것이다. 그래서 최근에 각국의 많은 대학(도서관)이 디지털 환경에 부응할 목적으로 전통적(인쇄형) 학위논문을 전자버전으로 변환하고 있다. 이에 주목하여 본 연구는 웹 설문지와 홈페이지 조사방식으로 학위논문 관리시스템의 현황을 분석한 선행연구를 이론적 배경으로 삼아 국내 학위논문의 표준관리모형을 제안하였다.

  • 학위논문은 석박사 과정의 학생들이 학위를 취득할 목적으로 자신의 전공분야와 특정 관점에서 조사 연구한 결과를 제출한 독창성이 높은 연구자료를 말한다. 그러나 학위논문은 상업출판사에서 발간하지 않기 때문에 대다수 도서관도 책자형태로 확보할 수 없다. 이에 따른 실물의 즉시적 이용가능성 및 내용정보의 부재현상은 모든 국가에서 학위논문의 활용도가 극히 낮을 수밖에 없는 요인으로 작용하고 있다. 이러한 상황에 주목하여 본 연구는 학위논문의 국제적 유통현황을 개관하고 국내의 관리시스템을 조사 분석하였다. 그리고 본 연구의 결과는 후속의 최종과제인 국내 학위논문의 표준관리모형을 개발하는데 활용될 것이다.

  • 1990년대 중반부터 다양하고 강력한 문서편집기의 보편화와 더불어 국내외의 대학에서는 책자형태의 논문제출과 동시에 전자형태 학위논문의 제출을 의무화하고 있다. 그러나 제출된 방대한 야의 전자형태의 논문들은 한글, MS-Word, Latexe 등 다양한 문서편집기로 작성되었고 문서형식의 표준화가 이루어지지 않아 효율적으로 활용되지 못하고 있는 실정이다. 본 논문에서는 다양한 형태로 존재하는 학위논문들을 하나의 통일된 중간포맷으로 변혼하고, 변환된 논물들을 전문데이터베이스(Full Text Datsbase)화하여 이를 인터넷을 통해 효육적으로 검색하고 서비스하기 위한 학위논문 전문검색시스템을 구현한다.

  • 본 연구는 21세기 대학의 정보화 및 지식화에 부응하고 나아가 국가의 연구 경쟁력을 확보하기 위한 대학학술정보 유통제제에 관한 현 상황을 분석하고 개선 방안을 마련하고자 한다. 이를 위한 세부 연구목적으로 대학발행 학술연구 정보에 대한 수집, 관리, 유통체제가 네트워크를 통해 체계적 이루어질 수 있도록 제반 제도를 연구하며, 차세대 전자출판 기반의 학술정보유통 및 디지털 도서관 구축에 필요한 기본 방향을 제시하여, 현행 학술정보 생산 및 유통체제를 바탕으로 전자출판이라는 새로운 패러다임에서의 제도 구현을 위한 단계적 제도 개선 수행 계획과 구체적인 추진 전략을 수립하는데 있다.

소셜 컴퓨팅을 위한 연구·학습 주제의 계층적 지식기반 구축 (Building Hierarchical Knowledge Base of Research Interests and Learning Topics for Social Computing Support)

  • 본 논문은 연구 학습 주제 지식베이스를 통한 소셜컴퓨팅 지원에 관한 연구로 두 가지 하부 연구로 구성되었다. 첫 번째 연구는 다양한 학문분야에서 전자 도서관 이용자들의 연구 및 학습 주제를 추출하기 위해 분야별로 분류가 잘 되어 있는 NDLTD Union catalog의 석박사 학위 논문 (Electronic Theses and Dissertations : ETDs)을 분석하여 계층적 지식베이스를 구축하는 연구이다. 석박사 학위 논문 이외에 ACM Transactions 저널의 논문과 컴퓨터 분야 국제 학술대회 웹사이트도 추가로 분석하였는데 이는 컴퓨팅 분야의 보다 세분화된 지식베이스를 얻기 위해서이다. 계층적 지식베이스는 개인화 서비스, 추천시스템, 텍스트 마이닝, 기술기회탐색, 정보 가시화 등의 정보서비스와 소셜컴퓨팅에 유용하게 사용될 수 있다. 본 논문의 두 번째 연구 부분에서는 우리가 만든 계층적 지식기반을 활용하여 4개의 사용자 커뮤니티 마이닝 알고리즘 중에서 우리가 수행중인 소셜 컴퓨팅 연구, 즉 구성원간의 결합도에 기반한 추천시스템에 최상의 성능을 보이는 그룹핑 알고리즘을 찾는 성능 평가 연구 결과를 제시하였다. 우리는 이 논문을 통해서 우리가 제안하는 연구 학습 주제 데이터베이스를 사용하는 방법이 기존에 사용자 커뮤니티 마이닝을 위해 사용되던 비용이 많이 필요하고, 느리며, 개인정보 침해의 위험이 있는 인터뷰나 설문에 기반한 방법을 자동화되고, 비용이 적게 들고, 빠르고, 개인정보 침해 위험이 없으며, 반복 수행시에도 일관된 결과를 보여주는 방법으로 대체할 수 있음을 보이고자 한다.

Information Needs and Information Seeking Behavior of Foreign Students in University of Delhi: A Survey

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the information needs and information seeking behavior of foreign students. A survey method was used for the undertaken study. The data were collected using a structured questionnaire, self-administered to 120 foreign students (60 males & 60 females) with 88 (47 males & 41 females) returns. The research is limited to post-graduate, M.Phil. and Ph.D. foreign students in University of Delhi. It was found that post-graduate students need information regarding their program of study while research scholars need information for writing research articles and for doing their research work. Most of them seek information through the internet. Research scholars used electronic resources such as databases, e-journals and e-theses and dissertations. 88.6% of the respondents also use books for seeking information. Their use of the library is limited with complaints about library staff and too few computer terminals. The present study will be helpful in designing new systems and services for the foreign students so that their information needs can be fulfilled easily. Further, findings of the study indicate that how the library professionals should assist foreign students to accomplish their information needs.

전문가 인식 조사에 의한 공학 설계 능력의 정의 및 하위 영역과 요소 도출 (Abstraction of the Definition of Engineering Design Ability and its Subdivision and Element by the Survey of Experts' Recognition)

  • The purpose of this research is to consider theoretical points of view on a preceding research related to an engineering design and abstract the definition of engineering design ability, its subdivision and element on the basis of experts' recognition. To achieve this goal, various literature researches were carried out by examining domestic and foreign articles in journals, lots of dissertations, and books related to engineering design through theoretical consideration. And to secure the validity on the definition of engineering design ability, its subdivision and element through the theoretical study, a feasibility evaluation method by the experts was applied. And the feasibility evaluation of the experts was conducted through 2 stages. The major conclusions of this study are as follows. Firstly, based on the experts' recognition on the definition of engineering design ability, its subdivision and element, which were revised through the 1st feasibility evaluation and then utilized in the 2st one, the validity was confirmed, and the subdivisions of the engineering design ability were divided into 5 and the elements of the subdivision ability were 33. Secondly, the engineering design ability was defined as "the one to design a realizable product with consumers' demand fully satisfying, based on a knowledge application ability, thinking ability, communication ability, problem-solving ability, and teamwork ability to solve engineering problems." Thirdly, the subdivisions of the engineering design ability were divided as a knowledge application ability, thinking ability, communication ability, problem-solving ability, and teamwork ability.

Cryopreservation of mesenchymal stem cells derived from dental pulp: a systematic review

  • Objectives: The aim of the present systematic review was to investigate the cryopreservation process of dental pulp mesenchymal stromal cells and whether cryopreservation is effective in promoting cell viability and recovery. Materials and Methods: This systematic review was developed in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement and the research question was determined using the population, exposure, comparison, and outcomes strategy. Electronic searches were conducted in the PubMed, Cochrane Library, Science Direct, LILACS, and SciELO databases and in the gray literature (dissertations and thesis databases and Google Scholar) for relevant articles published up to March 2019. Clinical trial studies performed with dental pulp of human permanent or primary teeth, containing concrete information regarding the cryopreservation stages, and with cryopreservation performed for a period of at least 1 week were included in this study. Results: The search strategy resulted in the retrieval of 185 publications. After the application of the eligibility criteria, 21 articles were selected for a qualitative analysis. Conclusions: The cryopreservation process must be carried out in 6 stages: tooth disinfection, pulp extraction, cell isolation, cell proliferation, cryopreservation, and thawing. In addition, it can be inferred that the use of dimethyl sulfoxide, programmable freezing, and storage in liquid nitrogen are associated with a high rate of cell viability after thawing and a high rate of cell proliferation in both primary and permanent teeth.

예비 간호인력 대상 다학제 전문직 간 교육 중재 연구의 체계적 문헌고찰: 동아시아권 국가 연구를 중심으로 (Systematic review on interprofessional education for pre-licensure nursing student in East Asia)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify and evaluate interprofessional education (IPE) interventions for healthcare professional students in East Asian countries. Methods: The reporting of this study followed the Preferred Reporting Items of Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines. A literature search was conducted using seven electronic databases: PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, Scopus, Web of Science, ERIC, and ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global. Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklists were also used to appraise the quality of the included studies. The outcomes of IPE interventions were classified based on a modified Kirkpatrick model. Results: This review included 30 studies predominantly conducted in Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan. The prevalent research design was a one-group pre-posttest design, and most IPE interventions occurred as single events. Approximately 70% of the studies involved students from two healthcare professions, mainly nursing and medicine. Simulations, group discussions, and lectures have emerged as the most common teaching methodologies, with almost half of the studies leveraging a combination of these techniques. The IPE content primarily focused on interprofessional teamwork, communication, and clinical patient care situations; these included the management of septic shock. The effectiveness of the IPE interventions was mainly evaluated through self-reported measures, indicating improvements in attitudes, perceptions, knowledge, and skills, aligning with Level 2 of the modified Kirkpatrick model. Nonetheless, the reviewed studies did not assess changes in the participants' behavior and patient results. Conclusion: IPE interventions promise to enhance interprofessional collaboration and communication skills among health professional students. Future studies should implement rigorous designs to assess the effectiveness of IPE interventions. Moreover, when designing IPE interventions, researchers and educators should consider the role of cultural characteristics in East Asian countries.
