  • This study explores the importance of OSI standards in library environment and specifically of Z39.50/SR information retrival protocols and ILL protocol. Libraries and other information systems need to implement these ap lication protocols in order to facilitate the sharing of library information resources through information networks. The foreign systems which have implemented the standard protocols are reviewed in this paper, and it is suggested that search results of OPACs and other bibliographic databases be directly used for electronic document request for fast document delivery, first by implementing Z39.50 OPACs and standard interlibrary loan systems and next by integrating the two systems in Korean electronic libraries.

  • The IR camera and laser-based IR projector provide an effective solution for real-time collection of moving targets in RGB-D videos. Different from the traditional RGB videos, the captured depth videos are not affected by the illumination variation. In this paper, we propose a novel feature extraction framework to describe human activities based on the above optical video capturing method, namely spatial-temporal texture features for 3D human activity recognition. Spatial-temporal texture feature with depth information is insensitive to illumination and occlusions, and efficient for fine-motion description. The framework of our proposed algorithm begins with video acquisition based on laser projection, video preprocessing with visual background extraction and obtains spatial-temporal key images. Then, the texture features encoded from key images are used to generate discriminative features for human activity information. The experimental results based on the different databases and practical scenarios demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm for the large-scale data sets.

  • Purpose: This study was performed to assess the accuracy of preoperative cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), when justified for other reasons, in locating the apical foramen and establishing the working length. Materials and Methods: Six electronic databases were searched for studies on this subject. All studies, of any type, were included if they compared measurements of working length with preoperative CBCT to measurements using an electronic apex locator (EAL) or histological reference standard. Due to the high levels of heterogeneity, an inverse-variance random-effects model was chosen, and weighted mean differences were obtained with 95% confidence intervals and P values. Results: Nine studies were included. Compared to a histological reference standard, CBCT indicated that the apical foramen was on average 0.40 mm coronal of its histological position, with a mean absolute difference of 0.48 mm. Comparisons were also performed to an EAL reference standard, but the conclusions could not be considered robust due to high levels of heterogeneity in the results. Conclusion: A low level of evidence is produced suggesting that preoperative CBCT shows the apical foramen to be on average 0.40 mm coronal to its histological position, with a mean absolute difference of 0.48 mm.

  • In this paper, we design and implement a XML Repository System(XRS) that exploits the advantages of DBMSs and IRSs. Our scheme uses BRS to support full text indexing and content-based queries efficiently, and ORACLE to store XML documents, multimedia data, DTD and structure information. We design databases to manage XML documents including audio, video, images as well as text. We employ the non-composition model when storing XML documents into ORACLE. We represent structured information as ETID(Element Type Id), SORD(Sibling ORDer) and SSORD(Same Sibling ORDer). ETID is a unique value assigned to each element of DTD. SORD and SSORD represent an order information between sibling nodes and an order information among the sibling nodes with the same element respectively. In order to show superiority of our XRS, we perform various experiments in terms of the document loading time, document extracting time and contents retrieval time. It is shown through experiments that our XRS outperforms the existing XML document management systems. We also show that it supports various types of queries through performance experiments.

  • In this paper, We describe a design of sales agent for support for negotiation during sales support on the Internet within Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) solutions. First, We propose an multi-agent system which can effectively search complex product on the WWW. And we represent databases and case-bases and propose a CBR cycle for sales agent. We then implement some of them in a prototype for a sales agent and a case study is shown where preliminary approaches are used to negotiate with a customer about his demands and available produucts in a CBR-based Electronic Commerce solution.

  • In this study, trends for five research areas of LED(Light Emitting Diode), OLED(Organic Light Emitting Diode), LCD(Liquid Crystal Display), PDP(Plasma Display Panel) and CRT(Cathode Ray Tube) are investigated using bibliometric analysis. The papers and patents citation data were extracted from Scopus and USPTO databases, respectively. We could figure out the research trends by the number of publications and citation information. We prospect the current interests and future trends by investigating the development process of the 5 research areas as function of time.

  • Mobile image retrieval is one of the most exciting and fastest growing research fields in the area of multimedia technology. As the amount of digital contents continues to grow users are experiencing increasing difficulty in finding specific images in their image libraries. This paper proposes a new efficient and effective mobile image retrieval method that applies a weighted combination of color and texture utilizing spatial-color and second order statistics. The system for mobile image searches runs in real-time on an iPhone and can easily be used to find a specific image. To evaluate the performance of the new method, we assessed the iPhone simulations performance in terms of average precision and recall using several image databases and compare the results with those obtained using existing methods. Experimental trials revealed that the proposed descriptor exhibited a significant improvement of over 13% in retrieval effectiveness, compared to the best of the other descriptors.

  • In traditional environment, user must search each journal OPAC, bibliographic DB, and full-text DB and E-Journal separately until user finds scientific and technology informations that he needs. The purpose of this study is to build one-click service system of Journals that supports integrating search. This system provides various functions, such as, journal browsing, journal search, article search, alert function, my library, document delivery service by integrating databases and electronic journals. Users search all information sources through journal OPAC and acquire journal full-text by single interface.

  • This paper discussed the factors that necessitated information networking, types of networks, benefits of information networking, library information networking and the University of Port 0Harcourt library network initiatives. Information networking is a process of communication, exchange of ideas, resource sharing and collaboration between individuals, organizations, institutions and libraries and it is facilitated by ICTs and the internet for improved accessibility. It has been brought about by information explosion, rapid advancement in information communication technologies, inadequate funding and increased demand for quality information. Networks can be classified into local, national, regional, and international networks and are formed to serve different categories of user communities. Benefits of information networking include resource sharing, on-line conferences and participation in programmes at distant centers, collaboration among scholars in different countries. Communication flow through the internet, social media, and electronic mail. Library information networking started with the interlibrary loan which has metamorphosed into library consortia in which groups of libraries partner to coordinate activities, share resources and combine expertise. The University of Port Harcourt Library network initiatives started with an e-granary (a CD ROM) and the establishment of a local area network. The library subscribes to more than 10 electronic databases. Information networking has greatly improved the sharing of resources in acquisition and dissemination of information resources since no single institution can acquire the overwhelming number of information resources in their various formats.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel way of combining multiple deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) architectures which work well for accurate video face identification by adopting a serial combination of 3D and 2D DCNNs. The proposed method first divides an input video sequence (to be recognized) into a number of sub-video sequences. The resulting sub-video sequences are used as input to the 3D DCNN so as to obtain the class-confidence scores for a given input video sequence by considering both temporal and spatial face feature characteristics of input video sequence. The class-confidence scores obtained from corresponding sub-video sequences is combined by forming our proposed class-confidence matrix. The resulting class-confidence matrix is then used as an input for learning 2D DCNN learning which is serially linked to 3D DCNN. Finally, fine-tuned, serially combined DCNN framework is applied for recognizing the identity present in a given test video sequence. To verify the effectiveness of our proposed method, extensive and comparative experiments have been conducted to evaluate our method on COX face databases with their standard face identification protocols. Experimental results showed that our method can achieve better or comparable identification rate compared to other state-of-the-art video FR methods.
