  • There are some efforts to improve the performance of electrical heat pump(EHP) and replace it with an alternative cooling equipment such as gas engine-driven heat pump(GHP), a gas cooling equipment, in order to solve the problem of summer electricity supply through reducing the summer electricity peak. This paper analyzes cost-benefit in accordance with replacement of electrical cooling system by gas cooling system using california standard test and sensitivity analysis of some scenarios.

  • In this research, an experimental study is performed to investigate the effects of system operating variables on the cooling and heating characteristics of heat pump system using geothermal heat source and carbon dioxide as a refrigerant. System variables analyzed include compressor frequency, electronic expansion valve opening, refrigerant charge, secondary fluid temperature and flow rate. Results show that optimum refrigerant charge and electronic expansion valve opening position exist at the maximum point of COP curve, and both cooling and heating capacity increase but COPs decrease with the increase of compressor frequency. The change of a secondary fluid temperature leads to variation of overheat area and enthalpy difference in the evaporator and gas cooler. which again results in considerable variations of cooling and heating capacity and COP. In the case of effects of secondary water fluid flow rate, both cooling capacity and COP increase with the increase of secondary flow in evaporator or gas cooler, whereas heating capacity and COP decrease with the increase of flow rate in gas cooler.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the cooling performance of Heat Pipe Heat Exchanger(HPHE) for an electronic telecommunication system by adequate convection condition. Heat generation rates of electronic components, the temperature distributions of HPHE and surrounding air are analyzed experimentally and numerically. In order to perform the heat transfer analysis for the thermal design of telecommunication system, a program is developed. The program is useful to a user who is not familiar with an electronic telecommunication system. The simulation results showed that the HPHE were able to achieve a cooling capacity of up to 230W at the maximum temperature difference of $17.4^{\circ}C$. To verify the results from the numerical simulation, an experiment was conducted under the same condition as the numerical simulation, and their results were compared.

  • The capillary pumped cooling system (CPCS) is a cooling system which controls temperature of the small electronic devices, such as IC device systems, notebook computers, etc. An important feature of CPCS is that a working fluid circulates in a system by capillary force in tubes instead of mechanical input power. The cooling effect of CPCS is investigated with respect to heat flux, condensation temperature under different working fluids (water, ethanol, methanol). Capillary pumped flows are visualized under various conditions and mass flow rate and temperature are experimentally measured. It is shown that the increasing tendency of mass flux for each working fluid is observed as the temperature of evaporator increases, and that the cooling possibility of CPCS depends on the performance of evaparator and condenser which sustains the steady state temperature continuously.

  • A numerical study t predict the characteristics on transient operation of the heat pipe cooling system with multiple heaters for electronic system has been performed. The heat pipe cooling system of 45 cm length and 16 mm diameter was composed of evaporator section with four heaters which simulate electronic components, insulated transport section, and condenser section with a conductor which was cooled under the constant heat flux boundary condition. Two test cases were investigated in present study; Case 1 indicated that the 1st and 2nd heaters among four heaters were heated off, while the 3rd and the 4th heaters were heated on. Case 2 was the inverse situation switched from heating locations of Case 1. Case 3 indicated that the 1st and 4th heaters among four heaters were heated off, while the 2nd and 3rd heaters were heated on. The results showed that the transient time to reach the steady state is shorter for Case 1 than for Case 2. Especially, the maximum temperature among the heaters which simulate electronic components during switching operation is relatively small compared to the maximum allowable operating temperature in electronic system. It is concluded that the heat pipe cooling system in present study operate with the good thermal reliability even for sudden switching situation of the heaters.

  • Rapid development of electronic technology requires small size, high density packaging and high power of electronic devices. So, in this paper, characteristics on oscillating heat pipe according to operating conditions(environment temperature, charging ratio of working fluid, inclination) based on experimental study was investigated. From the experimental results, $25^{\circ}C$environment temperature), R-141b(working fluid)40%(charging ratio) was best performace at others of inclination angle and The top heating mode of OCHP performed 80% efficiency of the bottom heating mode.

  • In a typical data center, large numbers of IT sever racks are arranged multiple rows. IT environments, in which extensive electronic hardware is air-cooled, cooling system inefficiencies result when heated exhaust air from equipment prematurely mixes with chilled coolant air before it is used for cooling. Mixing of chilled air before its use with heated exhaust air results in significant cooling inefficiencies in many systems. Over temperatures may not only harm expensive electronic equipment but also interrupt critical and revenue generating services. Cool shield is a cost effective aisle partition system to contain the air in cold aisles and hot aisles of an IT server room. This paper focuses on the use of performance metrics for analyzing aisle partition system in data centers.

  • Flow and thermal characteristics of cooling system for the robot controller were numerically as well as experimentally investigated. To obtain the overall flows within controller, the system level solutions were analysed at first and then the board level solutions were pursued to understand the detailed flow and temperature fields near the main board which have a significant influence on the cooling of electronic components. The evaluation for a performance of the heat exchanger was conducted on the basis of the obtained flow and temperature patterns. The results showed that the heat exchanger made a small contribution to the cooling of controller and caused an increase of the temperature in CPU.
