Operation Analysis of Induction Motor under the Combination of Linear & Non-linear Loads (선형 및 비선형 부하 혼합 운전시 유도전동기의 동작 분석)

  • This paper presents a scheme on the characteristics of induction motor under the combination of linear & non-linear loads at the three phase 4-wire power distribution system. Under the combination operation of single & three phase load, voltage unbalance will be generated and current unbalance will be more severe by the dropped voltage quality. All power electronic converters used in different types of electronic systems can increase harmonic disturbances by injecting harmonic currents directly into the feeder grid of three phase 4-wire. Harmonic current may cause torque to decrease. Motors may also overheat or become noisy and torque oscillation in the rotor can lead to mechanical resonance and vibration.

  • In this study, structural vibration analyses of a composite smart unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) have been conducted considering dynamic hub-loads of tilt-rotor. Practical computational structural dynamics technique based on the finite element method is applied using MSC/NASTRAN. The present smart UAV(TR-S2) structural model is constructed as full 3D configurations with both the helicopter flight mode and the airplane flight mode. Modal based transient response and frequency response analyses are used to efficiently investigate vibration characteristics of structure and installed electronic equipments. It is typically shown that the helicopter flight mode with the 90-deg tilting angle is the most critical case for the induced vibration of installed electronic equipments in the front.

  • This paper presents a voltage and frequency controller (VFC) for a 4-wire stand-alone wind energy conversion system (WECS) employing an asynchronous generator. The proposed VF con-troller consists of a three leg IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Junction Transistor) based voltage source converter and a battery at its DC bus. The neutral terminal for the consumer loads is created using a T-connected transformer, which consists of only two single phase transformers. The control algorithm of the VF controller is developed for the bidirectional flow capability of the active power and reactive power control by which it controls the WECS voltage and frequency under different dynamic conditions, such as varying consumer loads and varying wind speeds. The WECS is modeled and simulated in MATLAB using Simulink and PSB toolboxes. Extensive results are presented to demonstrate the capability of the VF controller as a harmonic eliminator, a load balancer, a neutral current compensator as well as a voltage and frequency controller.

A Study on the Protection and Measuring Algorithm of IED in Load Condition (부하상태를 고려한 IED 보호 및 계측 알고리즘에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, in power system, even though the needs of protective IED(Intelligent Electronic Device) is highly increased, there are some problems in the field when use the IED. When the IED is in the fluctuated overload condition, because of the existing algorithm calculate the trip time only with the measured current of just previous measuring stage, the calculated trip time is not a proper value for the overload protection at this kind of condition, and when the load current fluctuate between overload and normal condition, because of the instantaneous reset characteristic of existing algorithm the IED dose not trip. And the non linear loads using power electronic elements seem to be increased. These non linear loads require a counterplan about various harmonics incoming to electric power systems. So we will give solutions about these problems.

Development of Industrial Load Control Algorithm for Factory Energy Management System (F-EMS) under Real Time Pricing Environment (실시간요금제하에서 산업용 수용가의 부하제어알고리즘 개발)

  • In real-time electricity price environment, the energy management system can provide the significant advantage to the residential, commercial and industrial customers since it can reduce the electricity charge by controlling the load operation effectively in response to time-varying price. However, the earlier studies for load management mainly focus on the residential and commercial customers except for the industrial customers because most of load operations in industrial sector are intimately related with production schedule. So, it is possible that the inappropriate control of loads in industrial sector causes huge economic loss. In this paper, therefore, we propose load control algorithm for factory energy management system(F-EMS) to achieve not only minimizing the electricity charges but also maintaining production efficiency by considering characteristics of load operation and production schedule. Considering characteristics of load operation and production schedule, the proposed load control algorithm can reflect the various characteristics of specific industrial customer and control their loads within the range that the production efficiency is maintained. Simulation results show that the proposed load control algorithm for F-EMS leads to significant reduction in the electricity charges and peak power in industrial sector.

Comparative Study on AC and DC Feed System for Internet Data Center (인터넷데이터센터의 교류, 직류급전시스템 비교 분석)

  • Internet Data Centers (IDC), as essential facilities for modern IT industry, typically have scores of MW of concentrated electric loads. Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) are necessary for the power feed system of IDCs because of stable power requirement. Thus, conventional AC power feed systems of IDCs have three cascaded power conversion stages such as (AC-DC), (DC-AC), and (AC-DC), which results in very low conversion efficiency. On the contrary, DC power feed systems need just a single power conversion stage (AC-DC) supplying AC mains power to DC server loads, which gives comparatively high conversion efficiency and reliability. This paper compares the efficiencies between 220V AC power feed system and 300V DC power feed system on equal load conditions which were established in Mok-Dong IDC of Korea Telecom company (KT). Experimental results show that the total operation efficiency of the 300V DC power feed system is around 15% higher than that of the 220V AC power feed system.

  • Surge protective devices(SPDs) are widely used as a most effective means protecting the electrical and electronic equipment against overvoltages such as lightning and switching surges. When installing SPDs, it is essential that the voltage protection level provided by SPDs should be lower than the withstand voltage of the equipment being protected. But even the proper selection of SPDs are achieved, the voltage at the equipment terminal may be higher than the residual voltage of SPD due to the reflection and oscillation phenomena. This paper was focused on the investigations of the conditions for which the equipment is protected by an SPD taking into account the influences of the protective distance and type of load. The protective effects of SPD with voltage-limiting component were analyzed as functions of types of load and protective distance between the SPD and load. As a result, in the cases of long protective distances, capacitive loads and loads with high resistance, the voltage at the load terminal was significantly higher than the residual voltage of SPD. It was found that the proper installation of SPDs should be carried out by taking into account the protective distance and type of load to achieve reliable protection of electronic equipments against surges.

Thermal Stress Analysis for the Printed Circuit Board of Electronic Packages (전자장비 회로기판의 열응력해석)

  • In this paper, the heat transfer analysis and thermal stress analysis of the PCB(Printed Circuit Board) equipped in electronic Packages are carried out for various may types of chips on the PCB. And two structural PCB models are used in the analyses. The electronic chips on the PCB usually emit heat and this heat generates the thermal stress around the chip. The thermal load due to the heat generation of chips on the PCB may cause the malfunction of the electronic packages such as a monitor. a computer etc. Hence, the PCB should be designed to withstand these thermal loads. In this paper, the heat transfer analysis and thermal stress analysis are executed for the PCB model with pins and the analysis results are compared with the results for the PCB model without pins. The analysis results show that the PCB model without pins is not good for the thermal stress analysis of PCB, even though these two models have similar heat transfer characteristics. The analysis results also show that the highest thermal stress occurs in the pin especially attached to the highest temperature chip, and the PCB constrained to the electronic package on the long side is structurally more stable than other cases. The analyses of the PCB are executed using the finite element analysis code, NISA.

Non-destructive assessment of the three-point-bending strength of mortar beams using radial basis function neural networks

  • This paper presents a new method for assessing the three-point-bending (3PB) strength of mortar beams in a non-destructive manner, based on neural network (NN) models. The models are based on the radial basis function (RBF) architecture and the fuzzy means algorithm is employed for training, in order to boost the prediction accuracy. Data for training the models were collected based on a series of experiments, where the cement mortar beams were subjected to various bending mechanical loads and the resulting pressure stimulated currents (PSCs) were recorded. The input variables to the NN models were then calculated by describing the PSC relaxation process through a generalization of Boltzmannn-Gibbs statistical physics, known as non-extensive statistical physics (NESP). The NN predictions were evaluated using k-fold cross-validation and new data that were kept independent from training; it can be seen that the proposed method can successfully form the basis of a non-destructive tool for assessing the bending strength. A comparison with a different NN architecture confirms the superiority of the proposed approach.

Determination Method for Topology Configuration of Hybrid Cascaded H-Bridge Rectifiers

  • To reduce system complexity and implementation costs, fully-controlled H-bridge (FHB) modules and diode H-bridge PFC (DHB) modules are cascaded to form a hybrid cascaded H-bridge rectifier (HCHR). In this paper, the advantages of such a HCHR over other cascaded rectifiers are analyzed depending on the numbers of FHB modules and DHB modules. Therefore, to assign proper numbers to these two kinds of modules for the HCHR, a configuration determination method is investigated under balanced and imbalanced loads. Three principles are also presented to guide the configuration determination for the HCHR. In addition, the constraints for selecting the step-up ratio and filter inductance are derived based on a phasor diagram analysis. The proposed configuration determination method is validated by simulations under three different conditions in the PSIM environment. Finally, experiments are carried out on a scaled-down prototype where the configuration can be easily adjusted. The feasibility of the proposed theory is then verified by experimental results.
