Control Unit Design and Implementation for SIMD Programmable Unified Shader (SIMD 프로그래머블 통합 셰이더를 위한 제어 유닛 설계 및 구현)

  • Real picture like high quality computer graphic is widely used in various fields and shader processor, a key part of a graphic processor, has been advanced to programmable unified shader. However, The existing graphic processors have been optimized to commercial algorithms, so development of an algorithm which is not based on it requires an independent shader processor. In this paper, we have designed and implemented a control unit to support high quality 3 dimensional computer graphic image on programmable integrated shader processor. We have done evaluation through functional level simulation of designed control unit. Hardware resource usage rate are measured by implementing directly on FPGA Virtex-4 and execution speed are verified by applying ASIC library. the result of an evaluation shows that the control unit has the commands more about 1.5 times compared to the other shader processors that is a behavior similar to the control unit and with a number of processing units used in a shader processor, compared with the other processors, overall performance of the control unit is improved about 3.1 GFLOPS.

  • Automatic generation control (AGC) is an important function for load frequency control, which is being implemented in Energy Management System (EMS). A key feature of AGC is to back up governors to enhance the performance of frequency control. The governor regulates system frequency in several to ten seconds, while the droop control concept results in steady-state control error. AGC is a supplementary tool for compensation of the steady-state error caused by the droop setting of the governors. As the AGC target is delivered to each generator as an open loop control target, the generator output is not guaranteed to follow the AGC target. In this paper, we introduce generating unit controller (GUC) control block, which has the purpose of enabling the generator output to track the AGC target while maintaining the governor performance. We also address the tuning methods of GUC for better performance of AGC in the Korea Energy Management System (K-EMS).

  • A bi-directional and multi-channel wireless telemetry capsule, 11mm in diameter, is presented that can transmit video images from inside the human body and receive a control signal from an external control unit. The proposed telemetry capsule includes transmitting and receiving antennas, a demodulator, decoder, four LEDs, and CMOS image sensor, along with their driving circuits. The receiver demodulates the received signal radiated from the external control unit. Next, the decoder receives the stream of control signals and interprets five of the binary digits as an address code. Thereafter, the remaining signal is interpreted as four bits of binary data. Consequently, the proposed telemetry module can demodulate external signals so as to control the behavior of the camera and four LEDs during the transmission of video images. The proposed telemetry capsule can simultaneously transmit a video signal and receive a control signal determining the behavior of the capsule itself. As a result, the total power consumption of the telemetry capsule can be reduced by turning off the camera power during dead time and separately controlling the LEDs for proper illumination of the intestine.

  • In this paper, an electronic control unit of the automobile engine for optimal fuel injection an spark timing control has been designed and developed. This system includes hardware and software for a precise control of fuel injection and ignition timing. Especially, the crank angle sensor provides two separate signals: One is the position signal (POS) which indicates 180 degree pulses per revolution, and the other is the reference signal (REF) that represents each cylinder individually. Consequently, the developed engine control system has been able to control fuel injection and ignition timing more quickly and accurately. Through the experiment, it has been found that the fuel injection duration and the position of MBT have been influenced by coolant temperature, air flow rate and engine speed.

  • An electronic control system of the automobile engine for optimal start and idle speed control has been developed. This system employs the microcoputer-based electronic control unit and crank angle sensor for precise control on fuel injection, ignition timing, and idle speed more quickly and accurately at the start and idling. Consequently, the number of misfire can be reduced during been affected by air flow rate, idle quality(roughness), spark timing, fuel injection, water temperature, and load, Thus, this electronic control system strivers to reach the optimal idle operating point, defined the lowest idle speed(fuel economy) and idle quality(roughness), under any engine operating conditions.

  • Due to ELV banning, automotive electronics cannot use four kinds of heavy metal element (Pb, Hg, Cd, $Cr^{6+}$) from 2016. Therefore, this study was focused on degradation characteristics of Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu Lead-free solder joint with OSP and ENIG finsh under various reliability assessment method, as like to thermal shock test and high temeprature/high humidity test with test duration for cabin electronics. Also, we compared bonding strength degradation to other advanced research results of electronic control unit for engine room because of difference service temperature with mount location in automotive. Whisker growth phenomenon and mitigation method which were essentially consideration items for Pb-free car electronics were examined. Conformal coating is a strong candidate for mitigating whisker growth in automotive electronics. Necessary condition to adapt Pb-free in car electronics was shown.

  • SENT (single edge nibble transmission) is a serial communication protocol between automotive sensors and ECU (electronic control unit). SENT exploits digital waveform, so it has a simple and cheap architecture without transceiver circuits. Usually it is exploited as an embedded communication interface in the sensors. In this paper, a SENT interface was designed in Verilog HDL, fully complying with SAE J2716. It was implemented in FPGA, and verified on a test board. When it was synthesized, the gate count is about 2,500 gates in 0.18um technology.

Using DSP Algorithms for CRC in a CAN Controller

  • A controller area network (CAN) controller is an integral part of an electronic control unit, particularly in an advanced driver assistance system application, and its characteristics should always be advantageous in all aspects of functionality especially in real time application. The cost should be low, while maintaining the functionality and reliability of the technology. However, a CAN protocol implementing serial operation results in slow throughput, especially in a cyclical redundancy checking (CRC) unit. In this paper, digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms are implemented, namely pipelining, unfolding, and retiming the CAN controller in the CRC unit, particularly for the encoder and decoder sections. It must attain a feasible iteration bound, a critical path that is appropriate for a CAN system, and must obtain a superior design of a high-speed parallel circuit for the CRC unit in order to have a faster transmission rate. The source code for the encoder and decoder was formulated in the Verilog hardware description language.

  • In this paper, an interface unit is designed to efficiently monitor transmission data in Controller Area Network(CAN)-based control systems. The CAN uses a serial multi master communication protocol that efficiently supports distributed real-time control with a very high level of data integrity, and communication speeds of up to 1Mbps. The interface unit is composed of a DSP controller which collects data on the CAN bus and transfers data to a personal computer via serial communication to save and display of interesting signals. The experimental system consists of three DSP controllers which represent electronic control units of a vehicle, an interface unit for analysing the data on the bus, and a graphic monitoring program coded on the Windows platform. The validity and the effectiveness of the proposed simple type of CAN interface unit are shown through the experimental results.

  • PLC (Power Line Communication) is the communication method using the existing power line installed in houses and offices to convert and transmit high frequency communication signal from tens of KHz to tens of MHz, and receive the filtered signal using high frequency filter. The advantage of PLC is that PLC uses the existing power line installed in houses and offices so it does not require separate power line. Easy and convenient access using electric outlets is another advantage of PLC. However, PLC has some disadvantages such as limited transmission power, high load interference and noise, variable signal attenuation, characteristic of impedance selective possibility of frequency property. This study designed the boiler temperature control system by unit using the modem designed on the basis of technology used for PLC modem, and designed remote control system using internet. After conducting experiments with those two systems, it was possible to control stably. By commercializing this product, we can avoid unnecessary heating of separate temperature control unit, and save the cost according1y, and it is possible to control on a remote site using internet in a more convenient way.
