  • Many electronic ballasts for low pressure discharge lamps as fluorescent lamps are produced and commercialized. However, the electronic ballasts for high pressure lamps are now in progress to because of poor reliability and high cost of production. To obtain the confidence of electronic ballasts, it is necessary to prolong the life time of output switches. A variable frequency driver for inverter switches that can control the magnitude of output current with temperature of switches was designed and simulated. A conditions for circuit design are 22kHz : standard frequency, $100^{\circ}C$: standard temperature, $I_{peak}$ : 0.76A, and $V_{peak}$ : 184V, respectively. By simulation, as the temperature exceed a standard temperature, the frequency was increased up to 40kHz. However, the current and voltage that flow through switchs were decreased to 0.507A and 121V at $150^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • This paper studied the sensitivity characteries of the electronic ballast for the discharge lamps, which implies variation ratio of the output power by the passive element variation. We have derived the equation to represent the lamp power, and obtained the sensitivity characteristic equations. The simulation result shows that the proposed equations are correct and very useful to design the electronic ballast with the LCpCs-type resonant tank.

  • This paper presents a new approach in the design of multiple power output electronic ballasts for compact fluorescent lamps which power output range of 11W, 15W, 20W by using equivalent resistance and RLC equivalent circuit concept and frequency control. A multiple power output electronic ballast which adopts half-bridge inverter topology is set up to compare the results of PSpice simulation with experimental ones. Starting characteristics of lamp voltage, lamp current and light output are better than the existing electronic ballasts, and therefore is verified the validity of the proposed method.

  • Economical consumption of energy, longer life of lamps, higher lighting comfort and new aesthetic of illumination is subject of numerous research and development works. The halogen lamps are an example of positive solution some of above mentioned problems. The electronic transformers are more frequent used for their supply. In comparison with conventional transformers they have less weight, less volume and 60% less power losses. Their advantages are particular visible, when the hybrid technique is applied. The paper presents the results of engineering research and development works carried out in Private Institute of Electronic Engineering, in R. & D. Center for Hybrid Microelectronics and Resistors and in Technical School of Communications in Krakow, in the field of the design and exploitation tests of hybrid converters 220V AC /12V DC (electronic transformers) and electronic ballasts destined for the supply of halogen lamps 20W to 150W and fluorescent lamps respectively. To perform the converters, thick film technology and surface mount technology were used. For the protection of converter electronic circuit the thick film temperature sensor and transistors were applied. Moreover the paper presents the base application circuits of elaborated converters, their technical parameters and exploitation results. The development perspectives of such domain of hybrid circuits are also discussed.

  • This paper investigates the optimal design of an electronic ballast of half bridge inverter type in consideration of the variation of ambient temperatures for a 15[W] triple-type compact fluorescent lamp. The performances of electronic ballasts under different values or the capacitance ratio in the resonant tank circuit are compared with each other in the practical temperature range between 15[$^{\circ}C$] and 35[$^{\circ}C$] to determine its optimum value. As a result, the optimum value is found to be such that $C_1/C_2=10$ at which value starting of the lamp is most stable and light output reaches its maximum value with lowest variation.

  • As the level of technology and the standard of living improve, product reliability plays an increasingly significant role. This study has been performed to build a reliability model of electronic ballasts for the low wattage fluorescent lamp. Telcordia SR-332, one of the most widely used reliability specifications, was selected for the model development. We briefly reviewed the basic concepts of the electronic ballast. We then developed a reliability model for the ballast using SR-332 concepts and the reliability has been examined. We further discussed the significance of the first-year failure effect on the mean life.

  • This paper deals with the design criteria and conduction noise reduction of electronic ballast system which is based on half-bridge series inverters. The system is theoretically analyzed in six modes and operating frequency range is selected to obtain the high efficacy and no sound noise. It is proposed the criteria for determining the values of L and C which are the dey points in system design Because of high operating frequency, electromagnetic noise, especially conduction noise, is a serious problem in electronic ballasts. To reduce the conduction noise, the operation and attenuation characteristics of noise filter are analyzed and the method to determine the values of filter elements is proposed. Also, the parasitic components of the inductor and capacitor are taken into consideration in filter analysis. Digital simulations and experiments are carried out to prove the theoretical results. And perfor mances of the system are verified through tests.
