The present study was conducted to determine the effects of electron beam irradiation on the postharvest quality of cut flowers. Cut flowers were irradiated with electron beam at 100, 200, 400, 600, 800, 1,000, and 2,000 Gy with a 10 MeV linear electron beam accelerator to evaluate their irradiation tolerance. Postharvest quality was determined by monitoring fresh weight loss, flower longevity, flower diameter, flowering rate, visual quality of flowers and leaves, and chlorophyll content. Cut flowers showed a radiation-induced damage with increasing the irradiation dose. Flower longevity and fresh weight of cut flowers decreased when the irradiation dose was increased. Flower bud opening was also inhibited in a dose-dependent manner. The effective irradiation doses for 10% reduction of postharvest quality (ED10) values were 144.4, 451.6, and 841.2 Gy in the 'Medusa' lily, 'Montezuma' carnation, and 'Rosina White' eustoma, respectively. Although tolerance of cut flowers to electron beam irradiation vary according to species, cultivars, or maturity stage conditions, it is conceivable that 'Montezuma' carnation and 'Rosina White' eustoma could be tolerated and maintained overall postharvest quality up to 400 Gy, the generic irradiation dose approved by the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) for postharvest phytosanitary treatments.
A reliable and well-characterized dosimetry system which is traceable to the international measurement system, is the key element to quality assurance in radiation processing with cobalt-60 gamma rays, X-rays, and electron beam. This is specifically the case for health-regulated processes, such as the radiation sterilization of single use medical devices and food irradiation for preservation and disinfestation. Polyethylene is considered to possess a lot of interesting dosimetric characteristics. In this work, a detailed study has been performed to determine the dosimetric characteristics of a commercialized high-density polyethylene (HDPE) film using Fourier transformed infrared spectrometry (FTIR). Correlations have been established between the absorbed dose and radiation induced infrared absorption in polyethylene having a maximum at 965 cm-1 (transvinylene band) and 1716 cm-1 (ketone-carbonyl band). We have found that polyethylene dose-response is linear with dose for both bands up to1000 kGy. For transvinylene band, the dose-response is more sensitive if irradiations are made in helium. While, for ketone-carbonyl band, the dose-response is more sensitive when irradiations are carried out in air. The dose-rate effect has been found to be negligible when polyethylene samples are irradiated with electron beam high dose rates. The irradiated polyethylene is relatively stable for several weeks after irradiation.

Purpose : We compared the calcualted percent depth dose curves of 6 MeV electron beam to that of measured to evaluate the usefulness of Monte-carlo simulation method in radiation physics. Materials and Methods : The radiation dose values of 6 MeV electron beam using EGS4 code with one million histories in water were compared values that were measured from the depth dose curve of electron beam irradiated by medical accelerator ML6M. The central axis dose values were calculated according to the changing field size. such as $5{\times}5,\;10{\times}10,\;15{\times}15,\;20{\times}20cm^2$. Results : The value calculated showed a very similar shape to depth dose curve. The calculated and measured value of $D_max$ at $10{\times}10cm^2$ cone is 15mm and 14mm respectively. The calculated value of the surface radiation dose rate is $65.52\%$ and measured one is $76.94\%$. The surface radiation dose rate has varied from $64.43\%$ to $66.99\%$. The calculated values of $D_max$ are in the range between 15mm and 18mm. The calculated value was fitted well with measured value around the $D_max$ area, excluding build up range and below the $90\%$ depth dose area. Conclusion : This result suggested that the calculation of dose value can be replace the direct measurement of the dose for radiation therapy. Also, EGS4 may be a very convenient program to assess the effect of radiation dose using by personal computers.

The author studied the histopathologic changes according to a single or a split dose and the time after irradiation on the acinar cells of rat parotid gland. 99 Sprague Dawley rats, weighing about l20gm, were divided into control and 3 experimental groups. In experimental groups, GroupⅠ and Ⅱ were delivered a single dose of l5Gy, 18Gy and Group Ⅲ and Ⅳ were delivered two equal split doses of 9Gy, 10.5Gy for a 4 hours interval, respectively. The experimental groups were delivered by a cobalt-60 teletherapy unit with a dose rate of 222cGy/min, source-skin distance of 50㎝, depth of l㎝ and a field size of l2×5㎝. The animals were sacrificed at 1, 2, 3, 6, 12 hours, 1, 3, 7 days after irradiation and examined by light and electron microscopy. The results were as follows: 1. As the radiation dose increased and the acinar cells delivered a single dose exposure were more damaged, and the change of acinar cells appeared faster than those of a split dose exposure. 2. The histopathologic change of acinar cells appeared at 1 hour after irradiation. The recovery from damaged acinar cells appeared at 1 day after irradiation and there was a tendency that the recovery from damage of a split dose exposure was somewhat later than that of a single dose exposure. 3. Light microscope showed atrophic change of acinar cells and nucleus, degeneration and vesicle formation of cytoplasm, widening of intercellular space and interlobular space. 4. Electron microscope showed loss of nuclear membrane, degeneration of nucleus and nucleoli, clumping of cytoplasm, widening and degeneration of rough endoplasmic reticulum, loss of cristae of mitochondria, lysosome, autophagosome and lipid droplet. 5. Electron microscopically, the change of rough endoplasmic reticulum was the most prominent and this appeared at 1 hour after irradiation as early changes of acinar cells. The nuclear change appeared at 2 hours after irradiation and the loss of cristae of mitochondria was observed at 2 hours after irradiation in all experimental groups.
The semiconductor detector has a high sensitive to radiation and a small volume. It has been frequently used in high energy photon and electron beamdosimetry. However, Semiconductor detector are subject to radiation damage in high energy radiation beam which reduces the sensitivity and creat a large discrepancy. In this experiments, P-type semiconductor was irradiated to 18 MeV electron beam with pre-irradiation for reducing the sensitivity for high reproducibility and investigated the dose characteristics against the dose rate variations. The sensitivity per unit dose in small dose rate showed a 35% large different to a large dose rate with pre-irradiation dose for 0.5 KGy and 20% for 3 KGyin this study. The silicon detector has showed a large dependency of beam direction with 13% discrepancy and a linear sensitive as increased temperature.
Purpose : Irradiation cones by using backscatter electrons are made for the treatment of superficial small lesions of skin, oral cavity, and rectum where a significant dose gradient and maximum surface dose is desired. Methods and Materials : Backscatter electrons are produced from the primary electron beams from the linear accelerators. The design consists of a cylindrical cone that has a thick circular plate of high atomic number medium (Pb or Cu) attached to the distal end, and the plate can be adjusted the reflected angle. Primary electrons strike the metal plate perpendicularly and produce backscatter electrons that reflect through the lateral hole for treatment. Using film and a parallel plate ion chamber, backscatter electron dose characteristics are measured. Results : The depth dose characteristic of the backscatter electron is very similar to that of the hard x-ray beam that is commonly used for the intracavitary and superficial lesions. The basckscatter electron energy is nearly constant and effectively about 1.5 MeV from the clinical megavoltage beams. The backscatter electron dose rate of $35\~85\;cGy/min$ could be achieved from modern accelerators without any modification. and the depth in water of $50\%$ depth dose from backscatter electron located at 6mm for $45^{\circ}$ angled lead scatter. The beam flatness is dependent on the slit size and the depth of treatment, but is satisfactory to treat small lesions. Conclusions : The measured data for backscatter electron energy, depth dose flatness dose rate and absolute dose indicates that the backscatter electrons are suitable for clinical use.
The mechanics underlying photon and electron interactions was validated using our developed Brachytherapy computer code for high Dose Rate (HDR). By comparing the photon cross-section utilizing multiple physics libraries in the developed code, the results were benchmarked against experimental and theoretical findings. Klein-Nishina and experimental cross-section results were in good agreement with the Livermore library results. For two therapeutically relevant materials, the first scattered electron range was measured within 1 mm and 2 mm, which has significant implications for the interpretation of the kernel dose spikes observed in previous research.
Electron beam quality assurance (QA) should be done regularly for accurate radiation therapy. However, QA tools used in clinical practice are designed mainly for X-rays. So, a dosimeter for electron beam QA is required. Therefore, in this study, the electron beam detection performance was measured by using a thorium bromide material as an electron beam sensor. In addition, it was evaluated whether it could be applied with an electron beam QA dosimeter. Reproducibility, linearity, and dose rate dependence were evaluated at 6 MeV and 9 MeV energies. As a result of reproducibility, it showed a maximum output change of 0.92% at 6 MeV and 1.15% at 9 MeV. The linearity result evaluation and determination coefficient were presented as 0.9998. As a result of dose rate dependence evaluation, relative standard deviation 0.51% at 6 MeV and relative standard deviation 1.07% at 9 MeV were presented. The manufactured TlBr sensor shows the ability to detect radiation that meets the criteria for evaluation of reproducibility, linearity, and dose rate dependence. These results mean that the TlBr dosimeter is applicable as an electron beam QA dosimeter.
Our goal is to assess the suitability of a glass dosimeter on detection of high-energy electron beams for clinical use, especially for radiation therapy. We examined the dosimetric characteristics of glass dosimeters including dose linearity, reproducibility, angular dependence, dose rate dependence, and energy dependence of 5 different electron energy qualities. The GD was irradiated with high-energy electron beams from the medical linear accelerator andgamma rays from a cobalt-60 teletherapy unit. All irradiations were performed in a water phantom. The result of the dose linearity for high-energy electron beams showed well fitted regression line with the coefficient of determination; $R^2$ of 0.999 between 6 and 20 MeV. The reproducibility of GDs exposed to the nominal electron energies 6, 9, 12, 16, and 20 MeV was ${\pm}1.2%$. In terms of the angular dependence to electron beams,GD response differences to the electron beam were within 1.5% for angles ranging from $0^{\circ}$ to $90^{\circ}$ and GD's maximum response differencewas 14% lower at 180o. In the dose rate dependence, measured dose values were normalized to the value obtained from 500 MU/min. The uncertainties of dose rate were measured within ${\pm}1.5%$ except for the value from 100 MU/min. In the evaluation of the energy dependence of the GD at nominal electron energies between 6 and 20 MeV, we obtained lower responses between 1.1% and 4.5% based on cobalt-60 beam. Our results show that GDs have a considerable potentiality for measuring doses delivered by high-energy electron beams.
The dosimetric properties of Ge- and Er-doped optical fibres are studied. The Ge-doped fibre is found to be more sensitive to radiation and there is little fading of TL signal compared with Er-doped fibre. The Ge- and Er-doped fibres showed a linear response over a range of ${\sim}1\;Gy$ to about 120 Gy and ${\sim}1Gy$ to about 250Gy respectively. The Ge-doped fibre is found to be dose-rate independent both for photons and electron beams of energy ranging from 6 to 10 MeV and 6 to 12 MeV respectively. The fibre is energy independent for energy greater than ${\sim}0.1\;MeV$ for photon or 0.1 MeV for electron beam. From the depth-dose measurement, it was found that the position of maximum dose, dmax, increased with increasing energy ranging from ${\sim}2\;cm$ and ${\sim}2.5\;cm$ for 6 MeV and 10 MeV photons respectively. The central axis percentage depth dose at 10 cm depth was found to be in good agreement with the value obtained using ionization chamber.
