  • The torque characteristics of a surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) are analyzed in this study. The harmonics of the back electromotive force (EMF) and cogging torque are analyzed by the finite element method to study their effects on the torque ripple. Although low cogging torque can be achieved by varying geometric parameters such as the permanent magnet (PM) offset and notch depth on the stator teeth, the torque ripple is increased in some cases. The analysis results show that the ripple of the generated torque is determined by not only the amplitudes but also the phases of harmonics for the back EMF and cogging torque.

  • With the wide use of mobile phones, a paging signal by a sound transducer acts as an environmental noise on many occasions, thus necessitating an alternative paging signal by a vibration motor. Conventional vibration motors employ three-phase windings with mechanical brushes for commutation. In this paper, a new one-phase brushless and sensorless vibration motor is introduced utilizing digital signal processor chips in cell-phones. For electromagnetic field analysis, two-dimensional modeling can be implemented to determine the back electromotive force using axisymmetric boundary conditions. Geometric design parameters, such as coil pitch and magnet pitch. are considered for performance optimization. Through the experiments, it is shown that the proposed design has the equivalent performance with reduced number of parts, thus enhancing manufacturing productivity and reducing manufacturing cost.

  • Flux-reversal machine (FRM) is a new brushless doubly salient permanent magnet machine. Its operation is similar to that of the brushless DC motor, so it can be driven by 120 degree square wave voltage and use PWM pulse patterns in two-phase feeding scheme to control the speed. In this driving method, the back electromotive force (BEMF) current in the open phase is generated by the BEMF. It can be appeared or disappeared according to the changes of the neutral voltage of the machine. In this paper, the time-stepped voltage source finite-element method taking BEMF current into account is proposed. Its influences on the performances of the FRM are also investigated. To prove the propriety of the proposed analysis method, a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) installed experimental devices are equipped and the experiment is performed.

  • This paper discussed the research results on the development and output characteristics of single-phase direct drive 20W BLDC motor with ADC converter. It is designed to drive the rotor through PWM inverter switching and position the back electromotive force of the motor electrically 30° ahead of the hall sensor phase angle signal to ensure optimum switching time. As a major result of the characteristics evaluation, the maximum inverter efficiency was 92[%], the system efficiency was 53.34[%,] and the motor efficiency was 57.85[%].

  • This paper presents an electromagnetic analysis of a tubular linear machine with axially magnetized permanent magnets using improved analytical techniques. Based on the magnetic vector potential and a two-dimensional polar-coordinate system, the magnetic field and armature reaction field can be derived. Using these, equivalent circuit parameters, such as the electromotive force and inductance, can be obtained analytically. Finally, the generating characteristics are derived with the equivalent circuit method. In this study, the finite element method was employed to provide a comparative evaluation, and experiments were conducted to validate the results of the analytical analysis.

  • Recently, PMSMs(Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors) have become increasingly popular in various high-performance motor drive applications. However, the high-performance drive of PMSMs needs a position sensor such as a resolver, which increases not only the price of the system but also reduces the system reliability. This paper is on the implementation of sensorless control of a SPMSM, which drives a fan for cooling in appliances. In this paper, the rotor position for high-performance drive of a SPMSM is derived from back electromotive force (EMF) information proportional to the rotor speed. Also, the initial rotor position information for start-up is estimated from a saturation phenomenon of inductance. The validity of the proposed sensorless drives was confirmed by the experiment on the SPMSM drive systems for cooling fans of refrigerators and laptop computers.
