  • In Lamb wave detection of damages in smart structures, the excitation pulse is usually designed as a narrow band burst wave for the convenience of analysis and recognition. However, the wideband excitation can excite more modes in plate/shell structure and thus provides extra information for changes of the structure. This paper presents a method that can extract information in wideband Lamb wave signals. By transforming the detected signals into various sub-frequency band, the measured signal can be converted to its equivalences of narrow band excitations, therefore, the information in different frequency bands can be acquired from a single test and in the same time the complicity of wideband signal can be simplified. Some test results are provided to verify this method.

  • We present an attractive real time in-vivo endoscopic microscope with a resolution of submicron, in which two kinds of optical correcting plates are inserted to eliminate higher order spherical aberration and field curvature. And, since the conventional objective lens is replaced to GRIN lenses with diameter of 1 mm, the above endoscopic microscope can be effectively utilized to invade minimally for live animals.

  • This paper presents a new approach regarding thermal characteristics associated with a design of the high efficiency motor. The adjoint variable design sensitivity equations for both electromagnetics with respect to permeability and heat transfer considering conduction and convection terms are derived using the continuum method. For multi-objective topology optimization, FEA is validated in terms of electromagnetics and heat transfer by experiments. The proposed method is applied to a single-phase induction motor of the scroll compressor in order to control the direction of heat flow by maximizing/minimizing the temperature of the target area while maintaining the efficiency.

  • In the process of lithography using ultra violet light sources for semiconductor devices, most of defects are made by sub-micrometer pollutants generated at photochemical reactions. We proposed and developed a novel vibration-insensitive on-axis interferometer with a sub-micrometer lateral resolution by using the interference between two beams: one scattered from defects and the other reflected from a reference area without defects. The proposed system was successfully demonstrated to detect a small Al defect of 0.5 ${\mu}m$ diameter within the inspection time of less than 30 minutes over the area of the photo-mask which is 6 inch by 6 inch square.

  • An Instrument to measure normal spectral emissivity is built using a Fourier Transform-Infrared (FT-IR) spectrometer. The instrument is composed of four main parts, reference blackbody, sample furnace, optics system, and FT-IR spectrometer. Measurement ranges of temperature and wavelength are $200^{\circ}C{\sim}500^{\circ}C$ and $3.5{\mu}m{\sim}20{\mu}m$, respectively. Measured emissivity of the reference blackbody is greater than 0.9993 with combined relative uncertainty less than 0.69%, which can be considered an ideal blackbody. We studied the emissivity of opaque alumina, graphite, anodized aluminum, and steel (IMS 200). It is shown that emissivity increases with the roughness of the steel (IMS 200) surface.

  • We theoretically derive the set of general paraxial zoom locus equations for all zoom lens systems with finite object distance, including the infinite object distance case, by using the Gaussian bracket method and matrix representation of paraxial ray tracing. We make the zoom locus program by means of a numerical calculation method according to these equations in Visual Basic Language. Consequently, the solutions of this method can be consistently and flexibly used in all types of zoom lens in the step of initial design about zoom loci. Finally, in order to verify the justification and usefulness of this method, we show that two examples, such as $M_{4a}$ and $M_{4h}$ types of 4 groups, and one example, $M_{5n}$ type of 5 groups, which are very complicated zoom lens systems, can be rapidly and diversely traced through various interpolations by using this program.

  • When the object distance of a zoom lens with finite object distances is varied, we can fix the image at a fixed image plane by moving only one zoom lens group (autofocus group) without moving all zoom lens groups for the autofocus. We theoretically formulated and numerically calculated the moving distances of the autofocus group by using Gaussian brackets and a paraxial ray tracing method. The solutions of this method can be consistently and flexibly used in the initial design for the moving distance of autofocus group within these zoom loci in all types of zoom lens. Finally, in order to verify the usefulness of this method, we show that the moving distance of an autofocus group can be rapidly and diversely obtained in one example of $M_{5n}$ zoom lens type.

  • The surface plasmon resonance ellipsometer (SPRE), using a multiple air injection system with an extraction of air system, has been proposed and developed to minimize measurement error of signals due to diffusion of reagent into running buffer. Since the diffusion of reagent into running buffer affects the refractive index of the running buffer by changing the concentration, characteristics of binding between various bio-molecules don't appear clearly in measurement results. The diffusion between running buffer and reagent can be blocked by using an air bubble injection system. An extraction of air system is used to remove the noise signal due to unnecessary air bubbles flowing in a channel. Reliability of measurement results has been improved by using the valve system.

  • We theoretically derive the set of utilizable paraxial zoom locus equations for all complicated zoom lens systems with infinite object distance, such as a camera zoom lens, by using the Gaussian bracket method and the matrix representation of paraxial ray tracing. And we make the zoom locus program according to these equations in Visual Basic. Since we have applied the paraxial ray tracing equations into Gaussian bracket representation, the resultant program systematically simplifies various constraints of the zoom loci of various N group types. Consequently, the solutions of this method can be consistently used in all types of zoom lens in the step of initial design about zoom loci. Finally, in order to verify the usefulness of this method, we show that one example among 4 groups and that among 5 groups, which are very complex zoom lens systems, can be rapidly and with versatility traced through various interpolations by using this program.

  • We developed the equipment to measure the MTF(modulation transfer function) of an optical system for automatically inspecting the surface condition of an LCD substrate. We have made an object generator with USAF(United States Air Force) targets of three bar patterns and an integrating sphere, and an image analyzer with a 2 dimensional CCD(charge coupled device) and a relay lens. The MTF of the lens under test was obtained by correcting the measured CTF(contrast transfer function) which is the ratio of the contrast in the image of the USAF target to the contrast in the object. We have measured an optical system of F/13.65 (2.6x), the MTF are 30.6 % tangential plane and 26.1 % sagittal plane at 62.5 1p/mm.
