  • With the advent of sub-90nm technologies, the system-on-chip (SoC) and system-in-package (SiP) are becoming the trend in delivering low-cost, low-power, and small-form-factor consumer electronic systems running at multiple GHz. The shortened transistor channel length reduces the transistor switching cycles to the range of several picoseconds, yet the time-of-flights of the critical on-chip and off-chip interconnects are in the range of 10 picoseconds for 1.5mm-long wires and 100 picoseconds for 15mm-long wires. Designers realize the bottleneck today often lies at chip-to-chip interconnects and the industry needs a good model to compute the inductance in these parts of circuits. In this paper we propose a new method for extracting accurate equivalent inductance circuit models for SPICE-level circuit simulations of system-on-chip (SoC) and system-in-package (SiP) designs. In our method, geometrical meshes are created and numerical methods are used to find the solutions for the electromagnetic fields over the fine meshes. In this way, multiple-GHz SoC and SiP designers can use accurate inductance modeling and interconnect optimization to achieve high yields.

  • The Explosive Magnetic Generator of Frequency (EMGF) has been studied as a method to generate a strong microwave effectively through converting the explosion powder energy into the electromagnetic energy. However, the generated high frequency electromagnetic wave has not been explained clearly yet, for it is known to be difficult to analyze the high frequency electromagnetic wave oscillation using a simple time-varying equivalent circuit model. In this paper, we analyze the problems of the widely used inductance model with an exponential decreasing pattern and investigate the tendency of a more accurate inductance variation model using the finite element method of EMGF inductance by considering the magnetic compression effect. And we have shown via an EMGF output simulation that the new inductance variation model proposed here has an negative effect on EMGF output.

  • The purpose of this paper is to describe the mutual inductance between two non-coaxial circular coils in coil gun. As being in many electromagnetic applications, one of them is fixed and the other one is moving and, being not supported, its axis may not coincide with the axis of the fixed coil. This paper presents a method for the calculation of the mutual inductance in case of non-coaxial coupled coils, the characteristics of this inductance and experimental results. For the computation, the complete elliptic integrals formula and mesh matrix technique were introduced. This method enables accurate results from relatively simple procedure and calculation program.

  • A portable primary inductance standard set that includes a Maxwell-Wien bridge and a 10 mH standard inductor installed in a thermostat has been developed at KRISS. Two auxiliary resistance capacitance networks (analogous to a 'Wagner ground') provide excellent stability of the bridge balance and impose less strict requirements on the components of these networks. Removable capacitance and ac-dc resistance standards used in the bridge arms made it possible to reproduce 10 mH and 100 mH inductance values in the frequency range of 500 Hz to 3 kHz. From investigations of this standard and preliminary comparison with VNIIM (D. I. Mendeleyev Institute for Metrology), the results have demonstrated that the bridge can be used as a part of the transportable inductance standard with a measurement uncertainty within (1-3) $\mu$H/H at frequencies of 1 kHz and 1.6 kHz. The application of the bridge as a constituent part of the transportable standard gives us an opportunity to eliminate the influence of the standard inductors.

  • In this paper, we introduce an RFID planar coil whose inductance does not change when it is attached on the metal surface. The coil is designed considering the inductance reduction on metal surface so that the inductance is the inverse times the reduction rate, and copper pour is placed in the bottom layer of the coil. This coil configuration is very simple and effective in constructing RFID systems for managing objects with metal surface because it prevents inductance reduction on metal surface.

  • In this paper, an air-suspension type RF MEMS inductor is fabricated, and an appropriate de-embedding scheme for 3-dimenstional MEMS structure is applied and verified with inductance calculation algorithm. With the presented de-embedding method, parasitics from contanct pads and feeding lines are effectively and accurately de-embedded using open and short calibration procedure, and only spiral and posts can be characterized as a high-Q inductor structure. The validity of the de-embedding method is verified by the comparison of the measured and calculated inductances of two 1.5 and 2.5 turn square spiral inductors. The open-short de-embedded inductance error is below 5% each case in comparison with the calculated value based on H.M. Greenhouse's algorithm.

  • Alternative analytic expressions for the mutual inductance ($L_m$) and coupling coefficient (k) between circular loops are presented using more familiar and convenient expressions that represent the property of reciprocity clearly. In particular, the coupling coefficients are expressed in terms of structural dimensions normalized to a geometric mean of radii of two loops. Based on the presented expressions, various aspects of the mutual inductances and coupling coefficients, including the regions of positive, zero, and negative value, are examined with respect to their impacts on the efficiency of wireless power transmission.

  • For high frequency microstrip line modelling, a fast inductance extraction technique using an adaptive PEEC(partial element equivalent circuit) grid is proposed. The grid refinement technique is based on the current distribution depend on the excitation frequencies and the geometry of the microstrip lines. The adaptive ids are refined mainly in the area where heavy currents reside. This technique is applied to the inductance extraction of the microstrip lines. The results show fast convergence, and this adaptive technique is efficient to reduce computing time and the number of grids.

  • This paper describes fully integrated low phase noise MMIC voltage controlled oscillators(VCOs). The Asymmetrical Inductance Tank VCO(AIT-VCO), which optimize the shortcoming of the previous tank's inductance optimization approach, has lower phase noise performance due to achieving higher equivalent parallel resistance and Q value of the tank. This VCO features an output power signal in the range of - 11.53 dBm and a tuning range of 261 MHz or 15.2 % of its operating frequency. This VCO exhibits a phase noise of - 117.3 dBc/Hz at a frequency offset of 100 kHz from carrier. A phase noise reduction of 15 dB was achieved relative to only one spiral inductor. The AIT-VCO achieved low very low figure of merit of -184.6 dBc/Hz. The die area, including buffers and bond pads, is $0.9{\times}0.9mm^2$.

  • To enhance the zero-voltage switching (ZVS) range and power density of the phase-shift full-bridge (PSFB) ZVS converters used in geophysical exploration, an additional resonant inductor is used as a leakage inductance and a blocking capacitor which is equivalent to interlayer capacitance is integrated into a novel integrated inductor-capacitor-transformer (L-C-T). The leakage inductance and equivalent interlayer capacitance of the novel integrated L-C-T are difficult to determine by conventional methods. To address this issue, this paper presents accurate and efficient methods to compute the leakage inductance and equivalent interlayer capacitance. Moreover, the accuracy of this methodology, which is based on electromagnetic energy and Lebedev's method, is verified by an experimental analysis and a finite element analysis (FEA). Taking the problems of the novel integrated L-C-T into consideration, the losses of the integrated L-C-T are analyzed and the temperature rise of the integrated L-C-T is determined by FEA. Finally, a PSFB ZVS converter prototype with the novel integrated L-C-T is designed and tested.
