  • In this paper, a fault tolerant control problem is considered for a class of nonlinear system formulated in a gain scheduling form with LMI-based H-inf control technique Key benefits of this proposed scheme are demonstrated in the simulation of an electromagnetic suspension system with actuator and/or sensor failures, and the method is compared with the convensional state-feedback and output-feedback controller. It is clearly observed that the proposed control scheme shows an improved output performance in comparision with convensional methods.

  • Vibration isolation of mechanical systems, in general is achieved through either passive or active vibration control system. Although passive vibration isolators offer simple and reliable means to protect mechanical system from vibration environment, passive vibration isolator has inherent performance limitation. Whereas, active vibration isolator provide significantly superior vibration-isolation performance. Recently, many studied and applications are carried out in this field. In this study, vibration-isolation characteristics of active vibration control system using electromagnetic force actuator are investigated. Some control algorithms. Optimal Feedforward are used for active vibration isolation. Form the experimental results of each control algorithms, active vibration isolation characteristics are investigated.

  • The vibratory conveyors with electromagnetic drive are used for performing gravimetric flow of granular materials in processing industry. By realizing free vibrations of variable intensity and frequency over a wide range through application of the electromagnetic actuator, suitable power converter, and the corresponding controller, continuous conveyance of granular materials have been provided for various operating conditions. Standard power output stages intended for control of vibratory conveyance using thyristors and triacs. Phase angle control can only accomplish tuning of amplitude oscillations, but oscillation frequency cannot be adjusted by these converters. Application of current controlled transistor converters enables accomplishing the amplitude and/or frequency control. Their use implies the excitation of a vibratory conveyor independent of the supply network frequency. In addition, the frequency control ensures operation in the region of mechanical resonance. Operation in this region is favourable from the energy point of view, since it requires minimal energy consumption. The paper presents a possible solution and advantages of the amplitude-frequency control of vibratory conveyors by means of a current controlled power converter.

  • This paper reports on a flexible flap valve actuated by electromagnetic force under a constant pressure source. The flexible flap valve consists of the three main components: a flexible flap with a steel disk embedded in PDMS, an electromagnetic actuator and two glass plates with inlet and outlet. Sealing lip structures for improving the valve characteristics are added on the outlet of the bottom glass substrate. The flap valve is fabricated by the spin-coating process, the EDM process, SU-8 mold process and oxygen plasma treatment. The dimension of an assembled flap valve is $12mm{\times}20mm{\times}28mm$. The stroke volume of the flap valve is measured for various pressures and open times. When the input voltage of 30 V is applied for 0.33 s, the minimum stroke volume of the flap valve is 70 ${\mu}L$ at 50 kPa.

  • A laterally driven electromagnetic microactuator (LaDEM) is presented, and a micro-optical switch is designed and fabricated as a possible application. LaDEM provides parallel actuation of the microactuator to the silicon substrate surface (in-plane mode) by the Lorentz force. Poly-silicon-on-insulator (Poly-SOI) wafers and a reactive ion etching (RIE) process were used to fabricate high-aspect-ratio vertical microstructures, which allowed the equipment of a vertical micro mirror. A fabricated arch-shaped leaf spring has a thickness of $1.8{\mu}m$, width of $16{\mu}m$, and length of $800{\mu}m$. The resistance of the fabricated structure fer the optical switch was approximately 5$\Omega$. The deflection of the leaf springs increases linearly up to about 400 mA and then it demonstrates a buckling behavior around the current value. Owing to this nonlinear phenomenon, a large displacement of $60{\mu}m$ could be measured at 566 mA. The displacement-load relation and some dynamic characteristics are analyzed using the finite element simulations.

  • Many researches have been performed the analysis and experiments on auto-focus lens due to the development of camera module which is used in mobile-phone recently. Various types of voice coil motor are used mostly in the view point of actuators. Various type of magnetic flux flow is made by the combination of magnet, coil and yoke, etc. And the function of auto-focus is made by the proper combination of the lens components. In this research, some of the simple and economic structure is chosen to investigate the characteristics analytically among various types of lens which are used in industries. Desired level of lens module design was achieved by electromagnetic analysis using ANSYS$^{TM}$ finite element analysis program.

  • The effect of plasma on mono-static radar cross section under atmospheric pressure is demonstrated when the dielectric barrier discharge actuator has plasma layer. The volume of plasma layer is increased by using planar array of electrodes. Because the incident wave has electric field which is perpendicular to the electrode array, the undesired effect on radar cross section caused by structure of plasma actuator is minimized. In experiments, mono-static radar cross section is measured at the frequencies from 2 GHz to 25 GHz. The generated plasma reduces the radar cross section at frequencies above 18 GHz, and the amount of reduction reaches to 8 dB in maximum. The reduction can be controlled by changing the peak-to-peak voltage from high voltage generator. The result shows the possibility of plasma as a flexible radar cross section controller.

  • In this study, a novel electromagnetic microrobot system with locomotion and drilling functions in threedimensional space was developed. Because of size limitations, the microrobot does not have actuator, battery, and controller. Therefore, an electromagnetic actuation (EMA) system was used to drive the robot. The proposed EMA system consists of three rectangular Helmholtz coil pairs in x-, y- and z-axes and a Maxwell coil pair in the z-axis. The magnetic field generated in the EMA coil system could be controlled by the input current of the EMA coil. Finally, through various experiments, the locomotion and drilling performances of the proposed EMA microrobot system were verified.

  • Magnetic actuation utilizes the mechanic torque that is the result of interaction of the current in a coil with an external magnetic field. A main obstacle is, however, that torques can only be produced perpendicular to the magnetic field. In addition, there is uncertainty in the Earth magnetic field models due to the complicated dynamic nature of the field. Also, the magnetic hardware and the spacecraft can interact, causing both to behave in undesirable ways. This actuation principle has been a topic of research since earliest satellites were launched. Earlier magnetic control has been applied for nutation damping for gravity gradient stabilized satellites, and for velocity decrease for satellites without appendages. The three axes of a micro-satellite can be stabilized by using an electromagnetic actuator which is rigidly mounted on the structure of the satellite. The actuator consists of three mutually-orthogonal air-cored coils on the skin of the satellite. The coils are excited so that the orbital frame magnetic field and body frame magnetic field coincides i.e. to make the Euler angles to zero. This can be done using a Neural Network controller trained by PD controller data and driven by the difference between the orbital and body frame magnetic fields.
