  • In this paper, TX/RX dual operation microstrip single antenna for satellite communication is designed, analyzed, fabricated and measured. TX/RX frequency ranges are 14.0∼l4.5 GHz, 11.7∼12.75 GHz in respectively and vertical and horizontal polarizations are used for TX and RX. This antenna uses microstrip direct feeding for RX and aperture coupled strip-line feeding for TX and accommodates stacked elements for a high directivity and wide impedance bandwidth. In an analysis of single element, FDTD and MOM was compared and FDTD analysis was more accurate because of the consideration of finite structure and imperfect two ground planes. The proposed structure facilitates generally to an extension of two dimensional array and lower an unwanted radiation by strip-line feed in TX. TX/RX 8${\times}$4 array has a return loss below -10 dB, -14 dB in TX, RX respectively and a gain ranging from 19.1∼20.7 dB in TX, 21.2∼21.8 dB in RX which has a radiation efficiency of 43∼5l %, 52∼57 %.

  • In this paper, the resonant characteristics and modes of the film bulk acoustic wave resonator (FBAR) used in 1~2 GHz frequency region are analyzed by it's input impedance which was calculated by three dimensional finite element method formulated as eigenvalue problem using electro-mechanical wave equation and boundary condition. It was extracted that the resonant and the spurious characteristics considering the effects of electrode area and shape variation and unsymmetry of upper and lower electrode. Those effects couldn't be analyzed by on dimensional analysis, e.g. Mason equivalent model. The simulation result was confirmed by comparing with the simulation data from Mason model analysis and the measured data of the ZnO FBAR fabricated using micro-machining technique. Also, through the simulation of the area variations of FBAR, it was obtained that the optimum ratio of length and thickness is 20:1 and the minimum ratio is 5:1 to operate thickness vibration mode.

  • This paper discussed an optimal designs of 2 pole fan motors in refrigerator using a Niching Algorithm. We applied a Niching method to multi-objective optimal design of air gap construct. This Niching genetic algorithm is called "Restricted Competition Selection"(RCS) that is suitable for real world problem such as shape or structural optimization of electromagnetic device. The finite element method being used for nonlinear numerical characteristic analysis is provided exact solution in the system. Through this process is reduced the cogging torque ripple in air gap.

  • A fully coupled finite element analysis (FEA) technique was developed for analyzing the discharge phenomena and dielectric liquid flow while considering surface charge density effects in dielectric flow guidance. In addition, the simulated speed of surface charge propagation was compared and verified with the experimental results shown in the literature. Recently, electrohydrodynamics (EHD) techniques have been widely applied to enhance the cooling performance of electromagnetic systems by utilizing gaseous or liquid media. The main advantage of EHD techniques is the non-contact and low-noise nature of smart control using an electric field. In some cases, flow can be achieved using only a main electric field source. The driving sources in EHD flow are ionization in the breakdown region and ionic dissociation in the sub-breakdown region. Dielectric guidance can be used to enhance the speed of discharge propagation and fluidic flow along the direction of the electric field. To analyze this EHD phenomenon, in this study, the fully coupled FEA was composed of Poisson's equation for an electric field, charge continuity equations in the form of the Nernst-Planck equation for ions, and the Navier-Stokes equation for an incompressible fluidic flow. To develop a generalized numerical technique for various EHD phenomena that considers fluidic flow effects including dielectric flow guidance, we examined the surface charge accumulation on a dielectric surface and ionization, dissociation, and recombination effects.

  • Cell-phone becomes a necessary communication device in modern society. However, a paging signal by a sound transducer often acts as an unpleasant noise, thus necessitating a paging signal by a vibration motor. The conventional flat type vibration motor uses three-phase windings with three phase coils. In this article, a new design of a vibration motor using a V connection with two phase coils is presented, increasing mass productivity. For electromagnetic field analysis, due to the motor symmetry, two-dimensional modeling can be implemented for fast computation, and performance is predicted by the finite element method. The winding distribution angle turns out to be the most important design parameter for the elimination of dead points, and a new coil configuration is suggested which has no adverse effect on motor size and weight. Experimental tests of vibration confirm the validity of the proposed design.

  • With the increase of the production of energy from renewable, it becomes important to look at techniques to store this energy. Therefore, a single winding bearingless flywheel motor (SWBFM) specially for flywheel energy storage system is introduced. For the control system of SWBFM, coupling between the torque and the suspension subsystems exists inevitably. It is necessary to build a reasonable radial force mathematical model to precisely control SWBFM. However, SWBFM has twelve independently controlled windings which leads to high-order matrix transformation and complex differential calculation in the process of mathematical modeling based on virtual displacement method. In this frame, a Maxwell tensor modeling method which is no need the detailed derivation and complex theoretical computation is present. Moreover, it possesses advantages of universality, accuracy, and directness. The fringing magnetic path is improved from straight and circular lines to elliptical line and the rationality of elliptical line is verified by virtual displacement theory according to electromagnetic torque characteristics. A correction function is taken to increase the model accuracy based on finite element analysis. Simulation and experimental results show that the control system of SWBFM with radial force mathematical model based on Maxwell tensor method is feasible and has high precision.

  • A complete finite element analysis method for discharge onset process, which is governed and coupled by charge transport equation and electric field equation, was presented. The charge transport equation of first order was transformed into a second-order one by utilizing the artificial diffusion scheme. The two second-order equations were analyzed by the finite element formulation which is well-developed for second-order ones. The Fowler-Nordheim injection boundary condition was adopted for charge transport equation. After verifying the numerical results by comparing to the analytic solutions using parallel plane electrodes with one carrier system, we extended the result to blade-plane electrodes in 2D xy geometry with three carriers system. Radius of the sharp tip was taken to be 50 ${\mu}m$. When this sharp geometry was solved by utilizing the space discretizing methods, the very sharp tip was found to cause a singularity in electric field and space charge distribution around the tip. To avoid these numerical difficulties in the FEM, finer meshes, a higher order shape function, and artificial diffusion scheme were employed.

  • This paper presents an optimal design of a brushless DC motor considering an advanced $165^{\circ}$ 12 step control for a cost reduction. The advanced 12 step control that extends the conduction angle $150^{\circ}$ can improve the output of the motor. The optimal design considering the improved output power of the motor is proposed by reducing the volume of rotor, stator and permanent magnet using response surface method. The proposed design satisfied the performance requirements and efficiency improvement of the conventional motor and reduced the volume about 3.5%. The feasibility of the optimal design is proved by the electromagnetic field analysis using the finite element method.

  • The vacuum interrupter (VI) is used for medium-voltage switching circuits due to its abilities and advantages as a compact and environmental friendly circuit breaker. In general, the application of a sufficiently strong axial magnetic field (AMF) permits the arc to be maintained in a diffused mode to a high-current vacuum arc. A full understanding of the vacuum arc physics is very important since it can aid to improve the performance of vacuum interrupter. In order to closely examine the vacuum arc phenomena, it is necessary to predict the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) characteristics by the multidisciplinary numerical modeling, which is coupled with the electromagnetic and hydrodynamic fields, simultaneously. In this study, we have investigated the electromagnetic behaviors of high-current vacuum arcs for two different types of AMF contacts, which are coil-type and cup-type, using a commercial finite element analysis (FEA) package, ANSYS. The present results are compared with those of MAXWELL 3D, a reliable electromagnetic analysis software, for verification.
