In general, a power decoupling method using electrolytic capacitor is used to solve a problem that appears 120[Hz] ripple of grid at the PV module output. But electrolytic capacitor has a effect on the short lifetime and low reliability of PV system. Therefore, studies which replace the large electrolytic capacitor with small film capacitor have been researched in resent years. This paper proposes flyback inverter which can be replaced with film capacitor by connecting the circuit implementing zero voltage switching in PV side. The proposed system is validated by PSIM simulation.

A light-emitting diode (LED) has been increasingly applied to various industrial fields and general lightings because of its high efficiency, low power consumption, environment-friendly characteristic and long lifetime. To drive the LED lighting, a power converter with the constant output current is needed. Among many power converters, the flyback converter is chosen by many converter designers due to high power density, structural simplicity, and miniaturization. In this converter, an electrolytic capacitor is generally chosen for the stabilization of the DC voltage because of having the large capacitance and the low price. However, the disadvantages are the short expected life time and 120Hz ripple currents on the converter output node. In this paper, a single-stage dimmable PFC DCM flyback converter without the electrolytic capacitor is proposed to prolong the lifetime of the LED driver. For the long lifetime of the converter, the polyester film capacitor with the small capacitance is substituted for the electrolytic capacitor on the output node and an LC resonant filter is added to damp 120Hz ripple current. The proposed converter is verified through the simulation and the experimental works.
A new third harmonic injection circuit for light-emitting diode (LED) drivers is proposed to eliminate electrolytic capacitors and thereby extend the lifetime of LED drivers. When a third harmonic current is injected to the input current of the LED driver, the required capacitance of the driver can be reduced. The proposed circuit can control an injection ratio and has simple circuitry. The synchronous third harmonic is generated by a phase locked loop (PLL), a 1/3 counter, and op-amps and applied to a power factor correction circuit. Thus, the storage capacitor can install film capacitors instead of the electrolytic capacitor. The value of storage capacitance can be reduced to 78% compared to an input power factor of 100%. The proposed circuit is applied to the 80W prototype LED driver to experimentally verify the performances.

DC electrolytic capacitor is widely used in the power converter including PWM inverter, switching power supply and PFC Boost converter system because of its large capacitance, small size and low cost. In this paper, basic characteristics of DC electrolytic capacitor vs. frequency is presented and the real-time estimation scheme of ESR and capacitance based on the bandpass filtering is adopted to the single phase boost converter of uninterruptible power supply to diagnose its split dc-link capacitors. The feasibility of this real-time failure prediction monitoring system is verified by the computer simulation of the 5[kW] singe phase PFC half-bridge boost converter.

In the lighting industry, a Lighting Emitting Diode (LED) is increasingly used because of many advantages and a eco-friendly product comparing with the conventional lighting. However, the LED lighting has to include various AC/DC converters because the direct current is used for the LED lighting. Among a lot of power converters, the flyback converter is widely used for the LED lighting and includes some electrolytic capacitors for the voltage regulation. But the electrolytic capacitor has shorter lifetime than the LED element. It makes the expected life-time of the converter having the electrolytic capacitor shorter than the LED element. This paper proposes the single-stage PFC flyback converter without electrolytic capacitors. To verify the performance of the proposed converter, simulated and experimental works were carried out.
An aluminum electrolytic capacitor is used in DC Link of ac motor drive system. In this case it usually has the shortest lifetime in the system and then determines the system lifetime. Therefore life estimation of the electrolytic capacitor is needed for maintenance of th circuit. In this paper a method for life estimation is presented with a ESR(equivalent series resistance) model and a heat transfer model of capacitor that can be used to estimate operating temperature it is investigated through a simple example using ESR and heat transfer.
In general, aluminum electrolytic capacitors are used in the DC link of PWM inverters fur ac motor drives. The capacitor usually has the shortest lifetime in the system and then determines the lifetime of the inverter system. In this paper, a method of capacitor lifetime estimation is proposed by using an ESR(equivalent series resistance) model and a heat transfer model of capacitor, from which internal operating temperature is estimated. Then, the lifetime is predicted by Arrhenius's equation. A practical example is presented.
This paper presents a control method for variable-speed motor drives that do not use a DC-link electrolytic capacitor. The proposed circuit consists of a power factor correction converter for boosting the DC-link voltage, an inverter for driving the motor, and a small DC-link film capacitor. By employing a small DC-link capacitor, the proposed circuit that is small, and a low cost and weight are achieved. However, because the DC-link voltage varies periodically, the control of the circuit is more difficult than that of the conventional method. Using the proposed control method, an inverter can be controlled reliably even when the capacitance of the DC-link capacitor is very small. Experiments are performed using a 1.5-kW inverter with a $20-{\mu}F$ DC-link capacitor, and the experimental results are analyzed thoroughly.

LED has been great attentions in lighting industry because of its long life-time, high efficiency, excellent light output characteristics. However, the life-time of the LED driving system is decreased because of the electrolytic capacitor which is used in the power conversion system for driving LED lighting. Therefore the capacitance reduction methods have been studied to replace an electrolytic capacitor with film or tantalum capacitor. This paper presents the Single stage PFC flyback converter with the simplified third harmonic current injection circuit to reduce output capacitance and the proposed system is theoretically analyzed and verified through the experiment.
In this paper an optimal damped input filter is designed based on a Genetic Algorithm (GA) for an electrolytic capacitor-less AC-AC converter. Sufficient passive damping and minimum losses in passive damping elements, minimization of the filter output impedance at the filter cut-off frequency, minimization of the DC-link voltage and input current fluctuations, and minimization of the filter costs are the main objectives in the multi-objective optimization of the input filter. The proposed filter has been validated experimentally using an induction motor drive system employing an electrolytic capacitor-less AC-AC converter.
