  • The assignment of boundary conditions for the piston thermal loading analysis in internal combustion engine has been tested using the thermal circuit method with an engine simulation program. In an attempt to examine the accuracy of the employed boundary condition, another thermal boundary condition has been sought for through the electrolytic tank analogue method. Comparison of calculated temperature distributions obtained from these two boundary conditions with measured temperature values reveals that the electrolytic tank analogue method gives excellent agreement. However, the thermal circuit method has been found to be reasonable for practical applications, if modified partially.

  • Magnesium alloy have good physical properties such as good castability, good vibration absorption, high strength/weight ratios. Despite the desirable properties, the poor resistance of Mg alloy impedes their use in many various applications. Therefore, magnesium alloy require surface treatment to improve hardness, corrosion and wear resistance. Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) is one the surface treatment methods to form oxide layer on Mg alloy in alkali electrolyte. In comparison with Anodizing, there is environmental process having higher hardness and faster deposition rate. In this study, the characteristics of oxide film were examined after coating the AZ31 Mg alloy through the PEO process. We changed concentration of sodium aluminate into $K_2ZrF_6$, KF base electrolyte. The morphologies of the coating layer were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Corrosion resistance also investigated by potentiodynamic polarization analysis. As a result, propertiy of oxide layer were changed by concentration of sodium aluminate. Increasing with concentration of sodium aluminate in electrolyte, the oxidation layer was denser and the pore size was smaller on the surface.

  • The influence of the subsequent-annealing(SA) temperature on the plasma electrolytic oxidation(PEO)-treated Mgbased alloy was investigated in terms of surface properties associated with hardness and corrosion. For this purpose, a series of the SA treatments were performed on the PEO-treated samples at four different temperatures, i.e., 100, 150, 200, and $250^{\circ}C$ for 10 hrs. When compared to the sample without SA, the samples annealed at temperatures higher than $200^{\circ}C$ showed a difference in surface morphology due to the volume expansion accompanied by the dehydration reaction where the part of $Mg(OH)_2$ changed into MgO, working as harder phase. From the results of nano-indentation tests, the applied loads of the samples were seen to increase with increasing SA temperatures. However, the electro-chemical and corrosion properties of the sample annealed at $150^{\circ}C$ were higher than those of the samples annealed at three temperatures.

  • In this paper, it verifies the relationships between wheel velocity and surface roughness with the mirror surface grinding using electrolytic in-process dressing (ELID). In the general, as wheel velocity is high, surface roughness is better on the base of grinding theory. However, the relationships between wheel velocity and surface roughness is undefined due to the effect of electro-chemical dressing and the characteristics of materials. According to above relationships, ELID grinding experiment is carried out by following the change of wheel velocity. As the result of this study, it is found that surface roughness is not better as linearly as the increase of wheel velocity, but the limit of wheel velocity exists according to the characteristics of materials. Also, in contradiction to the present trend of high wheel velocity of manufacturing system for high surface integrity, it is able to expected to the base on the development of new ultra precision grinding method with the practicality of mirror surface grinding using ELID grinding method.

  • In general, electrolytic capacitors are used to reduce power pulsations on PV-panels. However, this can reduce the reliability of the PV AC-module system, because electrolytic capacitors have a shorter lifetime than PV-panels. In addition, PV-panels generate irregular power and inject it into the grid because the output power of a PV-panel depends on the surrounding conditions such as irradiation and temperature. To solve these problems, a grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) AC-module with active power decoupling and energy storage is proposed. A parallel bi-directional converter is connected to the AC module to reduce the output power pulsations of PV-panels. Thus, the electrolytic capacitor can be replaced with a film capacitor. In addition, the irregular output power due to the surrounding conditions can be regulated by using a parallel energy storage circuit. To maintain the discontinuous conduction mode at low irradiation, the frequency control method is adopted. The design method of the proposed converter and the operation principles are introduced. An experimental prototype rated at 125W was built to verify the performance of the proposed converter.

  • In this paper, a new decoupling technique for a flyback inverter using an active power decoupling circuit with auxiliary winding and a novel switching pattern is proposed. The conventional passive power decoupling method is applied to control Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) efficiently by attenuating double frequency power pulsation on the photovoltaic (PV) side. In this case, decoupling capacitor for a flyback inverter is essentially required large electrolytic capacitor of milli-farads. However using the electrolytic capacitor have problems of bulky size and short life-span. Because this electrolytic capacitor is strongly concerned with the life-span of an AC module system, an active power decoupling circuit to minimize input capacitance is needed. In the proposed topology, auxiliary winding defined as a Ripple port will partially cover difference between a PV power and an AC Power. Since input capacitor and auxiliary capacitor is reduced by Ripple port, it can be replaced by a film capacitor. To perform the operation of charging/discharging decoupling capacitor $C_x$, a novel switching sequence is also proposed. The proposed topology is verified by design analysis, simulation and experimental results.

  • Oxide layers were prepared on Al2021 alloys substrate under a hybrid voltage of AC 200 V (60 Hz) combined with DC 260 V value at room temperature within $5{\sim}60\;min$ by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO). An optimized aluminate-fluorosilicate solution was used as the electrolytes. The surface morphology, thickness and composition of layers on Al2021 alloys at different reaction times were studied. The results showed that it is possible to generate oxide layers of good properties on Al2021 alloys in aluminate-fluorosilicate electrolytes. Analysis show that the double-layer structure oxide layers consist of different states such as ${\alpha}-{Al_2}{O_3}$ and ${\gamma}-{Al_2}{O_3}$. For short treatment times, the formation process of oxide layers follows a linear kinetics, while for longer times the formation process slows down and becomes a steady stage. During the PEO processes, the average size of the discharge channels increased gradually as the PEO treatment time increased.

  • Formation behavior of PEO (Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation) films on AZ31 Mg alloy was studied in aqueous solutions containing various concentrations of hydroxide ion ($OH^-$) and silicate ion ($SiO_3{^{2-}}$) by voltage-time curves, and corrosion resistance of the PEO film-covered specimen was investigated by immersion test in 0.5 M NaCl solution. From the analyses of the voltage-time curves, it is suggested that two different types of anions are essentially needed for the formation of PEO films on AZ31 Mg alloy: film formation agent and local film breakdown agent. $SiO_3{^{2-}}$ ion acts only as a film formation agent but $OH^-$ ion acts not only as a film formation agent but also film breakdown agent. The PEO films prepared on AZ31 Mg alloy in alkaline silicate solution showed very good corrosion resistance without any pitting or filiform corrosions up to 480 h of immersion in 0.5 M NaCl.

  • Strontium is known as a salt-soluble element during the electrolytic oxide reduction (EOR) process. The chemical behavior of SrO during EOR was investigated via thermodynamic calculations to provide quantitative data on the chemical status of Sr. To achieve this, thermodynamic calculations were conducted using HSC chemistry software for various EOR conditions. It was revealed that SrO reacts with LiCl salt to produce SrCl2, even in the presence of Li2O, and that the ratio of SrCl2 depends on the initial concentration of Li2O dissolved in LiCl. It was found that SrO reacts with Li to produce Sr during EOR and that the reduced Sr reacts with LiCl salt to produce SrCl2. As a result, the proportions of metallic forms were lower in Sr than in La and Nd under various EOR conditions. The thermodynamic calculations indicated that the three chemical forms of SrO, SrCl2, and Sr co-exist in the EOR system under an equilibrium with Li, Li2O, and LiCl.
