  • In this study, we examine the tracking happen in a polyvinyl-chloride-sheathed flat cord (PVCSFC), which is widely used as a distribution cord. The study classifies the bridge current via the formed conductive paths during tracking in the PVCSFC. Further, it attempts to distinguish the characteristics of heat generation and heat transfer by kind of bridge current. When the PVCSFC is in the static state, the bridge currents flow only through the electrolyte bridge. In the case of the carbonized PVCSFC, the bridge currents flow through one or more conductive paths. One is the electrolyte bridge, the other is the bridge that is consisted electrolyte and carbonized insulation. Currents flowing through different conductive paths have different heat generation and transfer characteristics. As the bridge current flowing in the conductive path consisting of electrolyte and carbonized insulation increases, the temperature difference between the surface of the PVCSFC and ambient air also increases correspondingly.

  • A mixed powder of electrolyte and matrix support materials with a proper proportion was used for the fabrication of an electrolyte matrix sheet. The purpose of this study is to reduce the large change in MCFC cell thickness occurring in the initial start-up period when separate sheets of electrolyte and support are used. A focus was put on how small the carbonate particles could be made. The particle size of the carbonate powder was controlled by ball milling and the distribution was measured using a particle size analyser. The thickness change was reduced to 20% by this approach, which could be compared to 27% observed in a conventional cell. The thickness changes of electrolyte matrix have linear relation sizes of carbonate powders.

  • In this investigation, synchrotron X-ray imaging was used to investigate the water distribution inside newly developed gas diffusion media in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. In-situ radiography was used to reveal the relationship between the structure of the microporous layer (MPL) and the water flow in a newly developed MPL equipped with randomly arranged holes. A strong influence of these holes on the overall water transport was found. This contribution provides a brief overview to some of our recent activities on this research field.

  • A numerical study is made of a manifold and bipolar plate in polymer electrolyte fuel cells, the aim of the present study is to describe the characteristics of flow pattern In manifold and bipolar plate. The present work shows that the flow pattern in the bipolar plate is affected by the penetration flow through GDL characterized by clamping pressure and GDL intrusion in to a channel area. Manifold geometry also affects the flow distribution. The recirculation flow by bent duct destroy even distribution In manifold, the present work shows that corner rounding can improve the manifold performance.

  • This study attempted to find a proper method applicable to simulating practical equifield lines of two-dimensional Accelerate Lithium Migration Technique (ALMT), and evaluate the feasibility of using the theoretical ion migration model of one-dimensional ALMT to predict the ion migration behavior of two-dimensional ALMT. The result showed that the electrolyte or carbon plate can be used as matrix to draw equifield line graph similar to that by using mortar as matrix. Using electrolyte electrode module for simulation has advantages of simple production, easy measurement, rapidness, and economy. The electrolyte module can be used to simulate the equifield line distribution diagram in practical two-dimensional electrode configuration firstly. Then, several equifield line zones were marked, and several subzones under one-dimensional ALMT were separated from various equifield line zones. The theoretical free content distribution of alkali in concrete under two-dimensional electric field effect could be obtained from duration analysis.

  • A complete potential profile of an electrical double layer is calculated from a distribution function of charged particles based upon a model where the effect of a charged electrode and the finite size of ion are explicitly included. Electrons which are distributed on the electrode surface are assumed not to penetrate the electrode/electrolyte boundary. Formation of the constant density regions and their effects on potential and the electrical double layer capacitances are studied in great detail. The distribution of surface electrons as well as the constant density regions are found to be essential in characterizing the electrical double layer. The introduction of the ion size into the prior electrical double layer model of an ideally polarizable electrode/point charged electrolyte system, shows a great improvement in its characteristics mostly at negative potential region.

  • Research on High temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cell (HT-PEMFC) has actively been conducted all over the world. Since the HT-PEMFC can be operated at a high temperature of $120-180^{\circ}C$ using phosphoric acid-doped polybenzimidazole (PBI) electrolyte membrane, it has considerable advantages over conventional PEMFC in terms of operating conditions and system efficiency. However, If the thermal distribution is not uniform in the stack unit, degradation due to local reaction and deterioration of lifetime are difficult to prevent. The thin plate separator reduces the volume of the fuel cell stack and improves heat transfer, consequently, enhancing the cooling effect. In this paper, a large area flow field of thin plate separator for HT-PEMFC is designed and sub-stack is fabricated. We have studied stack performance evaluation under various operating conditions and it has been verified that the proposed design can achieve acceptable stack performance at a wide operating range.

  • It was investigated that effect of suspension and electrolyte concentrations on zeta potential of alumini suspension and Iso-Electric Point(I.E.P.). The alumina powders in 0.1∼l $\mu\textrm{m}$ particle size distribution, and the electrolyte NH$_4$NO$_3$ were used for preparing the suspension and electrophoresis method was used for measuring zeta potential in this work. As the concentration of suspension was increased, zeta potential and the I.E.P. were increased, respectively. On the other hand, as the electrolyte concentration was increased, the I.E.P. was decreased. As a result of this work, the best condition for measuring zeta potential was the 0.01 wt% and 10 mM of the suspension and the electrolyte concentration, respectively.

  • To fabricate a hydrocarbon polymer electrolyte composite membrane incorporated with Pt nanoparticle, the polymer electrolyte membrane made of a sulfonated-fluorinated hydrophilic-hydrophobic block copolymer (SFBC) and sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) blend in the wight ratio of 1 : 1 was synthesized, and a simple drying process was used in order to incorporate Pt nanoparticle into the SFBC/SPEEK film by reducing platinum (II) bis (acetylacetonate), Pt $(acac)_2$. The distribution of the Pt nanoparticles was observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and mechanical and thermal properties were tested by universal testing machine (UTM) and thermogravimetry analyzer (TGA). Cation conductivity, ion exchange capacity (IEC) and I-V characteristics were estimated.

  • Water management for Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell (PEFC) has been receiving large attention as an important issue in practical applications. Proper water management is vital to achieve high performance and durability of PEFC. In this study, an X-ray imaging technique was employed to visualize the water distribution in a PEFC quantitatively. X-ray images of the PEFC components with and without water are distinguished clearly. From the visualized X-ray images, we could confirm the water distribution in the region between separator and gas diffusion layer (GDL). In addition, the contact angle of water in the micro-channels was also clearly visualized..
