  • The objective of this study was to study the bending characteristics of Ag nano ink using EHD (Electrohydrodynamics) inkjet printing technology for flexibility and miniaturization of devices. The optimal conditions for the technology were derived, and bending characteristics of the Ag nano circuit obtained. For the EHD printing, it is essential to find the optimal point for each parameter such as material characteristics, density, flow rate, voltage, discharge height etc. Therefore, it was derived as the point from the working height and the applied voltage. Also, bending characteristics are confirmed by measuring resistance with each radius of curvature using a fabricated bending module. It was confirmed that rate of resistance change increases rapidly as the radius of curvature increases.

  • In the present study, a numerical analysis on electrohydrodynamics (EHD) of the flow and the collection mechanisms inside a electrostatic precipitator with a spiral spike electrode were investigated. The phenomena of the electrostatic precipitator include complex interactions between the electric field, the fluid flow and the particle motion. To validate the numerical method, the numerical computation for the electric field of a simple wire-pipe type electrostatic system having an analytic solution were performed. Using this numerical method, the electric field of the spiked electrostatic precipitator was simulated. And the fluid flow and the particle motion inside the spiked electrostatic precipitator were numerically analyzed.

  • A fully coupled finite element analysis (FEA) technique was developed for analyzing the discharge phenomena and dielectric liquid flow while considering surface charge density effects in dielectric flow guidance. In addition, the simulated speed of surface charge propagation was compared and verified with the experimental results shown in the literature. Recently, electrohydrodynamics (EHD) techniques have been widely applied to enhance the cooling performance of electromagnetic systems by utilizing gaseous or liquid media. The main advantage of EHD techniques is the non-contact and low-noise nature of smart control using an electric field. In some cases, flow can be achieved using only a main electric field source. The driving sources in EHD flow are ionization in the breakdown region and ionic dissociation in the sub-breakdown region. Dielectric guidance can be used to enhance the speed of discharge propagation and fluidic flow along the direction of the electric field. To analyze this EHD phenomenon, in this study, the fully coupled FEA was composed of Poisson's equation for an electric field, charge continuity equations in the form of the Nernst-Planck equation for ions, and the Navier-Stokes equation for an incompressible fluidic flow. To develop a generalized numerical technique for various EHD phenomena that considers fluidic flow effects including dielectric flow guidance, we examined the surface charge accumulation on a dielectric surface and ionization, dissociation, and recombination effects.

  • A numerical program based on computational fluid dynamics has been developed to simulate characteristics of an EHD induction micropump. The ambiguity of boundary conditions was removed by adopting an equation formulated for electric potential as the dependent variable. The calculations show that the dependency of frequency agrees well with the experiments and the previous analysis. The instability, caused by backflows, is getting stronger as the channel depth increases, which is consistent with experiments. The present study reveals that it is due to the limit in the penetration depth which the electric field can affect. Despite the disadvantage of large channel depth, there is a certain optimal depth for the maximum flow rate.

  • To understand EHD nucleate boiling heat transfer enhancement, EHD effects on R-113 nucleate boiling heat transfer in a non-uniform electric field were investigated. The pool boiling heat transfer and the dynamic behavior of bubbles in d.c./a.c. electric fields under a saturated or subcooled boiling were studied by using a plate-wire electrode and a high speed camera. From the pool boiling heat transfer study, the shift of the pool boiling curve, the increase of the heat transfer and the delay of ONB and CHF points to higher heat fluxes were observed. From the dynamic behavior of bubbles, it was observed that bubbles departed away from the whole surface of the heated wire in radial direction due to EHD effects by a nonuniform electric field. With increasing applied voltages, the bubble size decreased and the active nucleation site and the departure number of bubbles showed the different trend. The present study indicates that the EHD nucleate boiling heat transfer is closely connection with the dynamic behavior of bubbles and the secondary flow induced near the heated surface. Therefore, the basic studies on the bubble behavior such as bubble frequency, bubble diameter, bubble velocity and flow characteristics are necessary for complete understanding of the enhancement mechanism of the boiling heat transfer using an electric field.

  • In this paper, EHD(electrohydrodynamics) characteristics of AC corona discharge for the various frequency was investigated. Ionic wind velocity is controlled by the frequency of applied ac high voltage, and maximum velocity of the ionic wind is obtained at 1.2kHz. Maximum velocity are 1.90 m/s by metal corona electrode and 2.72m/s by wet porous corona electrode, These attain 91~99% of the maximum velocity in the DC corona discharge by adjusting the frequency through the experiments. In this paper, wet porous corona electrode has high possibility of cooling methode because a AC corona discharge using wet porous corona electrode is able to eject more water droplets than DC corona discharge.

  • The Electrostatic Inkjet system has many applications in cost and time effective manufacturing of printed electronics like RFIDs, OLEDs and flexible displays etc. This paper presents pneumatic ink supply system for an electrohydrodynamic deposition (EHD) setup for the precise pressure control to produce a small amount of discharge at the end of the capillary. The meniscus shape depends upon the applied pneumatic pressure to the ink supply system. Furthermore, this paper also compares meniscus shapes at different applied pneumatic pressures. It is concluded that patterning of constant line-width can be achieved better by controlling the meniscus shape using this technique.
