  • $LiFePO_4$ is a promising active material (AM) suitable for use in high performance lithium-ion batteries used in automotive applications that require high current capabilities and a high degree of safety and reliability. In this study, an optimization of the electrode design parameters was performed to produce high capacity lithium-ion batteries based on $LiFePO_4$/graphite electrodes. The electrode thickness and porosity (AM density) are the two most important design parameters influencing the cell capacity. We quantified the effects of cathode thickness and porosity ($LiFePO_4$ electrode) on cell performance using a detailed one-dimensional electrochemical model. In addition, the effects of those parameters were experimentally studied through various coin cell tests. Based on the numerical and experimental results, the optimal ranges for the electrode thickness and porosity were determined to maximize the cell capacity of the $LiFePO_4$/graphite lithium-ion batteries.

  • Electrode of solid oxide fuel cell must have sufficient porosity to allow gas transport to the interface with electrolyte effectively but high porosity has a negative impact on structural stability in electrode support. Thus, the upper limit of porosity is based on consideration of mechanical strength of electrode. In this study, the effect of microstructure of Ni-YSZ anode supported SOFC on the mechanical and electrical property was investigated. LSCF composite cathode and 8YSZ electrolyte were used. The porosity of the anode was modified by the amount of graphite powder and added graphite contents were 24, 18, 12 vol%, respectively. The higher the porosity, the better the electrical performance, $P_{max}$. While the flexural strength decreased with increasing the amount of graphite. But the rate of increase in electrical performance and the rate of decrease in mechanical strength were not directly proportional to amount of graphite. The optimum graphite content incorporating both electrical and mechanical performance was 18 vol%.

  • In this study, we investigated amounts, distributions and sizes of pores of multilayer piezoelectric transformer, and predicted heat emission property and electrical characteristics according to designs of internal electrode. Forming densities of device having MLC, fingered and full filled internal electrode structure were 4.73 g/㎤, 4.80 g/㎤, 4.82 g/㎤ and forming porosities were 17.3737%, 13.1475%, 12.6121%, respectively. And sintered densities of MLC structured, fingered and full filled devices were 7.76 g/㎤, 7.75 g/㎤, 7.84 g/㎤ and sintered porosities were 4.0967%, 2.7132%, 2.5317%, respectively. Therefore, we concluded that fingered and full fi1led internal electrode devices, expecially, fingered internal electrode devices had cost-effective effect and maximum poling effect due to higher sintered density and lower porosity than MLC structured device. Also we can predict that they have an effect on good heat emission and high output properties of multilayer piezoelectric transformer.

  • Highly loaded LiCoO2 positive electrodes are prepared to construct high-energy density lithium-ion batteries, their electrochemical performances are evaluated. For the standard electrode, a loading of about 2.2 mAh/㎠ is used, and for a high-loading electrode, an electrode is manufactured with a loading level of about 4.4 mAh/㎠. The content of carbon black as electronic conducting additive, and the porosity of the electrode are configured differently to compare the effects of electron conduction and ionic conduction in the highly loaded LiCoO2 electrode. It is expected that the electrochemical performance is improved as the amount of the carbon black increases, but the specific capacity of the LiCoO2 electrode containing 7.5 weight% carbon black is rather reduced. When the conductive material is excessively provided, an increase of electrode thickness by the low content of the LiCoO2 active material in the same loading level of the electrode is predicted as a cause of polarization growth. When the electrode porosity increases, the path of ionic transport can be extended, but the electron conduction within the electrode is disadvantageous because the contact between the active material and the carbon black particles decreases. As the electrode porosity is lowered through the sufficient calendaring of the electrode, the electrochemical performance is improved because of the better contact between particles in the electrode and the reduced electrode thickness. In the electrode design for the high-loading, it is very important to construct the path of electron conduction as well as the ion transfer and to reduce the electrode thickness.

  • Recently Ni/MH secondary battery have been studied very extensively because of containing no pollutants as well as superior performance. However comparing to widely studying high capacity of hydrogen storage alloys electrode, the capacity of Ni electrode is inferior. Using for high capacity Ni/MH battery as a anodic materials, the study about high capacity Ni electrode is necessary. To making high capacity Ni electrode, active materials were impregnated in various polarization impregnation conditions. Plaque, milling for 6hr and sintered at $800^{\circ}C$, indicated porosity over 80%, and porosity were increased with proper condition electrochemical etching treatment. Proper impregnation condition was 40~80mA/cm, polarizing time was 5~10min.

  • In solid oxide fuel cell system, yttria-stabilized zirconia is generally adopted as the electrolyte, which has high strength and superior oxygen ion conductivity, and the air electrode and the fuel electrode are attached to this. Recently, new structure of 'layered planar SOFC module' was suggested to solve the reliability problem due to the high temperature stability of a sealing agent and a binding material. In this study to materialize the air electrode in a layered planar SOFC module, the LSM ink was coated to form homogeneous electrode in the channel after the ink preparation. As the porosity control agent, PMMA or active carbon powder was adopted with use of a commercial dispersant in ethanol. The optimal amounts of both the porosity control agents and the dispersant were determined. Four (4) vol% of the dispersant for the LSM-PMMA case and 15 vol% for LSM-carbon powder showed the lowest viscosities respectively to indicate the best dispersed states of the slurries. With PMMA and carbon powder, sintered LSM ink shows the relatively homogeneous distributions of pores and with increases of the agents, the porosities increased in both cases. From this, it can be thought that the amount of the PMMA or carbon powder could be used to control the porosity of the LSM ink.

  • Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC) show great promise as an inexpensive alternative to conventional p-n junction solar cells. Investigations into the various factors influencing the photovoltaic efficiency have recently been intensified. The conventional absorber electrode in DSSC is composed of compacted or sintered $TiO_2$ nanopowder that carries an anchored organic dye. The absorbance of incident light in the DSC is realized by specifically engineered dye molecules placed on the semiconductor electrode surface ($TiO_2$). The dye absorbs light at wavelengths up to about 920nm, the energy of the exited state of the molecule should be about 1.35eV above the electronic ground state corresponding to the ideal band gap of a single band gap solar cell. The dye molecules ar adhered onto the nanostrutured $TiO_2$ electrode by immersing the sintered electrode into a dye solution, typically 3mM in alcohol, for a long enough period to fully impregnate the electrode. However, the concentrations of the dye is slightly changed due to the evaporation of the alcohol. The dye is more expensive than other materials in DSSC and related to the efficiency of DSSC. Therefore, the concentrations of the dye should be carefully measured. In this study, we investigated to the dye loading on fired $TiO_2$ powder as a function of temperature by the TG-DTA and the dye solution by UV-visible spectroscopy after the impregnation process. The dye loading is related to the porosity of the nanostructured $TiO_2$ electrode.

  • The consequences of electrode density and thickness for electrochemical performance of lithium-ion cells are investigated using 2032-type coin half cells. While the cathode composition is maintained by 90:5:5 (wt.%) with $LiCoO_2$ active material, Super-P electric conductor and polyvinylidene fluoride polymeric binder, its density and thickness are independently controlled to 20, 35, 50 um and 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 g $cm^{-3}$, respectively, which are based on commercial lithium-ion battery cathode system. As the cathode thickness is increased in all densities, the rate capability and cycle life of lithium-ion cells become significantly worse. On the other hand, even though the cathode density shows similar behavior, its effect is not as high as the thickness in our experimental range. This trend is also investigated by cross-sectional morphology, porosity and electric conductivity of cathodes with different densities and thicknesses. This work suggests that the electrode density and thickness should be chosen properly and mentioned in detail in any kinds of research works.

  • The objective of this study is the development and verification of the 4-electrode resistivity probe (4ERP) for the estimation of electrical properties of the saturated soils. The 4ERPs with wedge and plane types are manufactured to obtain the electrical resistivity without polarization at the electrodes by using Wenner array. The wedge type is for the penetration into the soil samples and the plane type is for the installation into the cells used for the laboratory tests. The consolidation tests are carried out by using 6 types of glass beads and 3 types of sands in size. The test results show that the electrical resistivity increases with a decrease in the porosity, and the constant m used in Archie's law is dependent on the particle shape rather particle size. The one dimensional liquefaction tests show that the porosity obtained by the 4ERP is similar to that determined by the volume fraction. The penetration of the 4ERP into the large scale calibration chamber produces the resistivity profiles. This study demonstrates that the 4ERP may effectively estimate the porosity of the saturated soils.
