Li ion battery (LIB) is one of the most remarkable energy storage devices currently available in various applications. With a growing demand for high-performance batteries, the role of electrochemical analysis for batteries, especially, electrode reactions are becoming very important and crucial. Among various analytical methods, cyclic voltammetry (CV) is very versatile and widely used in many fields of electrochemistry. Through CV, it is possible to know electrochemical factors affecting the reaction voltage and reversibility, and furthermore, quantitative analysis on Li+ diffusivity as well as intercalation and capacitive reactions, and also anionic redox reaction. However, the explanation or interpretation of the results of CV is often deficient or controversial. In this mini-review, we briefly introduce the principle of cyclic voltammetry and its applications in LIB to bring a better understanding of the electrochemical reaction mechanisms involved in LIB.
To satisfy the growing demand for high-performance batteries, diverse novel anode materials with high specific capacities have been developed to replace commercial graphite. Among them, cobalt hydroxides have received considerable attention as promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries as they exhibit a high reversible capacity owing to the additional reaction of LiOH, followed by conversion reaction. In this study, we introduced graphene in the fabrication of Co(OH)2-based anode materials to further improve electrochemical performance. The resultant Co(OH)2/graphene composite exhibited a larger reversible capacity of ~1090 mAh g-1, compared with ~705 mAh g-1 for bare Co(OH)2. Synchrotron-based analyses were conducted to explore the beneficial effects of graphene on the composite material. The experimental results demonstrate that introducing graphene into Co(OH)2 facilitates both the conversion and reaction of the LiOH phase and provides additional lithium storage sites. In addition to insights into how the electrochemical performance of composite materials can be improved, this study also provides an effective strategy for designing composite materials.
Graphite-based electrodes were prepared using synthetic graphite (MCMB 1028) or natural graphite (NG) powder using a dimensionally stable anode (DSA) as a substrate. Their electrochemical properties were investigated in vanadiumbased electrolytes to determine how to increase the durability and improve the energy efficiency of redox flow batteries. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) was performed in the voltage range of -0.7 V to 1.6 V vs. SCE at various scan rates to analyze the vanadium redox reaction. The graphite-based electrodes showed a fast redox reaction and good reversibility in a highly concentrated acidic electrolyte. The increased electrochemical activity of the NG-based electrode for the $V^{4+}/V^{5+}$ redox reaction can be attributed to the increased surface concentration of functional groups from the addition of conductive material that served as a catalyst. Therefore, it is expected that this electrode can be used to increase the power density and energy density of redox flow batteries.
Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has been widely used as a catalyst for the bifunctional activities of hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER). Here, we investigated size dependent HER and OER performance of MoS2. The smallest size (90 nm) of MoS2 exhibits the lowest overpotential of -0.28 V at -10 mAcm-2 and 1.52 V at 300 mAcm-2 with the smallest Tafel slopes of 151 and 176 mVdec-1 for HER and OER, respectively, compared to bigger sizes (2 ㎛ and 6 ㎛) of MoS2. The better HER and OER performance is attributed to high electrochemical active surface area (6 × 10-4 cm2) with edge sites and low charge transfer resistance (18.1 Ω), confirming that the smaller MoS2 nanosheets have the better catalytic behavior.
The characteristics of phenol removal and $UV_{254}$ matters variance were investigated and compared by the variation of operating factors (NaCl concentration, air flow rate, initial phenol concentration) in electrochemical reaction (ER) and dielectric barrier discharge plasma reaction (DBDPR), respectively. The phenol removal rate was shown as $1^{st}$ order both in ER and DBDPR. Also, the absorbance of $UV_{254}$ matters which means aromatic intermediates was analyzed to investigate the complete phenol degradation process. In ER, the phenol degradation and aromatic intermediates production rates increased by the increase of NaCl concentration. However, in DBDPR, the variation of NaCl concentration had no effect on the degradation of phenol and $UV_{254}$ matters. Air flow rate had a little effect on the removal of phenol and the variation of $UV_{254}$ matters in ER. The phenol removal rate in ER was a little higher than that in DBDPR. The produced $H_2O_2$ and $O_3$ amounts in ER were 2 times and 10 times higher than those in DBDPR. The chlorine intermediates ($ClO_2$ and free chlorine) were produced in ER, however, they were not produced in DBDPR.
The application of scanning electrochemical microscopy to the imaging of surfaces in water and air and to the study of the electrochemistry of single molecules is discussed.
