In order to develop a new corrosion sensor for detecting and monitoring the external and internal corrosion damage of buried pipeline, the electrochemical property of sensors and the correlation of its output to corrosion rate of steel pipe, were evaluated by electrochemical methods in two soils of varying resistivity (5,000 ohm-cm, 10,000 ohm-cm) and synthetic tap water environments. In this paper, two types of galvanic probes were manufactured: copper-pipeline steel (Cu-CS) and stainless steel-pipeline steel (SS-CS). The corrosion behavior in synthetic groundwater and synthetic tap water for the different electrodes was investigated by potentiodynamic test. The comparison of the sensor output and corrosion rates revealed that a linear relationship was found between the probe current and the corrosion rates. In the soil resistivity of $5,000{\Omega}-cm$ and tap water environments, only the Cu-CS probe had a good linear quantitative relationship between the sensor output current and the corrosion rate of pipeline steel. In the case of $10,000{\Omega}-cm$, although the SS-CS probe showed a better linear correlation than that of Cu-CS probe, the Cu-CS probe is more suitable than SS-CS probe due to the high current output.
Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) has been extensively used to try to evaluate the corrosion state of the steel/concrete system. This technique is attractive because, in theory, used in a wide range of frequencies, it can give detailed information about the mechanisms and kinetics of the electrochemical reactions. Impedance measurements were performed using potential control and measuring the corresponding current response. One-year-old southern exposure test. specimens were used in the current study. The effectiveness of corrosion inhibiting additives was evaluated. The corrosion current densities estimated by impedance measurements were confirmed by those determined using linear polarization techniques. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term-performance potential of the corrosion inhibitors in chloride contaminated reinforce concrete.
Ag925, silver with added copper, is popular alloy due to its low price. However, it has a difficult to use because of the low corrosion resistance. In various alloys, neodymium (Nd) works as an element to improve corrosion resistance by reacting with interstitial elements in the alloy. When 1.5 wt. % Neodymium was added to Ag925, the potential on the activated polarization in a potentiodynamic polarization test was increased from -0.15 V to -0.05 V. Ag925 with added neodymium showed the passivation after activation polarization. But When the potential increased around 50 mV, the current density is increased to 3 × 10-3. Ag925 with the 1.5 wt. % Nd had the low corrosion rate.
Epoxy coatings cured by different amine based curing agents have been prepared. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been used to monitor the surface topology changes of epoxy coatings before and after hygrothermal cyclic test. The glass transition temperature ($T_g$) and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the epoxy coating were measured by Thermo-mechanical Analysis (TMA). The Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) with hygrothermal cyclic test has been introduced to evaluate the corrosion protection of the epoxy coatings. In conclusion, thermal properties of epoxy coatings were in good agreement with the results of corrosion protection of epoxy coated carbon steel obtained result by EIS with hygrothermal cyclic test. The relationship between thermal properties, surface roughness changes and corrosion protection of epoxy coatings are discussed in this study.
Non metallic composite materials, for example, GECM(graphite epoxy composite material) show high specific strength because of low density. These kinds of non metallic composite materials improved the structural effectiveness and operation economics. However, if these materials contacted several metals, corrosion can be arisen since non metallic composite materials have electrical conductivity. This paper dealt with galvanic corrosion between graphite epoxy composite material and several metals. Base on the electrochemical galvanic corrosion test between GECM and metals, corrosion current of carbon steel and aluminium increased with time but corrosion current of stainless steels and titanium decreased and galvanic potential increased. This behavior shows the galvanic corrosion depends upon the presence of passive film. Also, galvanic effect of GECM coupled with ferrous alloys and non-ferrous alloys was lower than that of 100% graphite, which is attributed to lower exposed area of graphite fiber in the GECM than apparent area of the GECM specimen used for the calculation of galvanic current in this work.
The aim of the present study is to evaluate electrochemical corrosion characteristics of base metal and weldment of Al-Mg alloy in seawater solution. The specimen was 5mm thick 5083-H321 Al alloy plate which was butt-welded using gas metal arc welding (GMAW). To identify the types of inclusions in the weldment, the microstructural observation was performed along with Energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) analysis. The anodic polarization experiments were performed to evaluate the corrosion characteristics. After the anodic polarization test, the corroded surface was observed by SEM(scanning electron microscope) and EDS. The result of the analysis revealed a large number of voids in the weldment, especially coarse grains and inclusions in the heat affected zone. The corrosion current density of the weldment was found to be approximately 13 times higher than that of the base metal, indicating lower corrosion resistance of the weldment due to the defects in the weldment and the heat affected zone.
The effects of austenitizing temperature in a range of $1000{\sim}1150^{\circ}C$ on the corrosion resistance in 420J2 stainless steel tempered at $150^{\circ}C$ were investigated by an electrochemical uniform corrosion test in a solution of 0.5M $H_2S0_4$. Pitting test and DL-EPR test for intergranular corrosion were carried out in a solution of 3.5% NaCl and 0.5M $H_2S0_4$ + 0.01 M KSCN respectively. In uniform corrosion test, specimens austenitized below $1100^{\circ}C$ showed similar corrosion current density and passive current density, whereas specimens austenitized at $1150^{\circ}C$ showed a little higher values. Pitting potential slightly increased with an increase of austenitizing temperature. The degree of sensitization, DOS, also slightly increased with an increase of austenitizing temperature, reaching the highest degree at $1150^{\circ}C$. It was expected that the increase of DOS was due to the larger grain size rather than the dissolved precipitates in the matrix.

Recently, galvanizing method is predominantly being used not only a economical point of view but also due to it s stability and long life. For example, guard rail of high way, all kinds of structures for ship etc. were protected with galvanizing and demand of galvanized structural materials was being increased with more and more. However, galvanized structures were inevitably being deteriorated with time eventually because they were corroded with solution of galvanizing film and exfoliation of it s film in the present severe corrosive environment. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the corrosion resistance of the galvanizing film through various methods such as variation of chemical composition of galvanizing bath, chromate treatment and coating treatment. In this study, three test specimens such as pure galvanizing, galvarium, and chromate treatment were submerged at tap water with inhibitor addition. And the effect of their corrosion resistance improvement was comparatively investigated with electrochemical method. Corrosion current density of the galvanized steel was the largest among three specimens, however, the galvarium steel showed the lowest corrosion current density. Futhermore, these three kinds of test specimens indicated considerably excellent corrosion resistance by dipped at tap water with inhibitor addition. Especially, the galvanized steel showed the best effect of corrosion resistance improvement than other test specimens.
The corrosion behavior of carbon steel (N80) in carbon dioxide saturated 1%NaCl solution with and without acetic acid or acetate was investigated by weight-loss test, electrochemical methods (polarization curve, Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy). The major objective is to make clear that the effect of acetic acid and acetate on the corrosion of carbon steel in $Co_2$ environments. The results indicate that either acetic acid or acetate accelerates cathodic reducing reaction, facilitates dissolution of corrosion products on carbon steel, and so promotes the corrosion rate of carbon steel in carbon dioxide saturated NaCl solution. All Nyquist Plots are consisting of a capacitive loop in high frequency region, an inductive loop in medial frequency region and a capacitive arc in low frequency region. The high frequency capacitive loop, medial frequency inductive loop and low frequency capacitive arc are corresponding to the electron transfer reaction, the formation/adsorption of intermediates and dissolution of corrosion products respectively. All arc of the measured impedance reduced with the increase of the concentration of Ac-, especially HAc. However, the same phenomenon is not notable after reducing pH value by adding HCl. HAc is a stronger proton donor and can be reduced directly by electrochemical reaction firstly. Ac- can't participate in electrochemistry reaction directly, but $Ac^-$ an hydrate easily to create HAc in carbon dioxide saturated environments. HAc is as catalyst in $Co_2$ corrosion. As a result, the corrosion rate was accelerated in the presence of acetate ion even pH value of solution increased.
The demand for stainless steel is continuously increasing with the development in offshore industry due to its excellent corrosion resistance characteristics. However, it suffers cavitation-erosion in application of high rotating fluid and the damage accelerates in combination with electrochemical corrosion because of Cl-ion in sea water. This paper investigated the complex damage behavior for 431 stainless steel, that is one of martensite stainless steels, through the hybrid test in sea water. Various experiments were carried out, including potential measurement, anodic/cathodic polarization experiment and Tafel analysis. Surface morphology was observed and damage depth was analyzed by SEM and 3D microscope after each experiment, respectively. The results revealed that more active potential was observed under cavitation condition than static condition due to breakdown of passive film and activation of charge transfer, and that higher corrosion current density was obtained under cavitation condition due to synergistic effect of corrosion and erosion.
