Improving the Stability of Series-Connected Solid Oxide Fuel Cells by Modifying the Electrolyte Composition

  • YSZ based anode supported solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) were prepared, and two cells with different electrolyte thicknesses were connected in series for the simulation of a cell-imbalanced fuel cell stack. Pure YSZ cells in a series connection exhibited a rapid degradation when a thick electrolyte cell was operated under a negative voltage. On the other hand, ceria added-YSZ cells in a series connection were stable under similar operating conditions, and the power density and impedance were about the same as those before tests. The improved stability was due to the reduction of internal partial pressure in the electrolyte by locally increasing the electronic conduction. Thus, we propose a new protection method, i.e., the local addition of ceria in the YSZ electrolyte, to extend the lifetime of a cell-imbalanced SOFC stack.

Evaluation of Corrosion Resistance Properties of Hexagonal Boron Nitride Based Polymer Composite Coatings for Carbon Steel in a Saline Environment

  • Herein, we report polyvinyl butyral composites coatings containing various loadings of 72-h bath sonicated hexagonal boron nitride particles (5 ㎛) to enhance barrier properties of coatings. Barrier properties of coatings were determined in 3.5 wt% NaCl after different time periods of immersion via electrochemical techniques such as open circuit potential, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and potentiodynamic polarization test. Coatings containing sonicated hexagonal boron particles exhibited improved corrosion resistance for longer periods of immersion compared to neat coating. We also discussed effects of hexagonal boron nitride on healing properties of polyvinyl butyral. Coatings containing 1.0 wt% loading of sonicated hexagonal boron nitride showed improved long-term barrier properties than coatings with other compositions. The presence of hexagonal boron nitride also affected the healing properties of polyvinyl butyral coatings besides their barrier properties. Such improved barrier properties of composites coatings were attributed to the high aspect ratio, plate-like shape, and electrically insulated nature of the filler.

  • In this study, the optimum amount of chloride ions is used to collaborate with hybrid corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel rebar treatment in simulated pore concrete (SCP) solution is discovered. The corrosion inhibition performance of hybrid inhibitors is carried on by open circuit potential (OCP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and potentiodynamic polarization (PP). The highest corrosion inhibition resistance is found in case of LP-C2 after 240 h exposure. Surface studies including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used to figure out the surface morphology of the steel rebar treated with hybrid inhibitors in order to collaborate well with electrochemical studies. Anodic type inhibition action was confirmed by potentiodynamic polarization study.

  • Reinforced concrete (RC) structures play a significant role in the construction industries. An embeddable solid-state reference electrode (ESSRE) was used to evaluate the corrosion status of steel rebar in the concrete of various cover thicknesses that exposed to the maritime environment (3.5 % NaCl) in this study. From the open circuit potential measurement (OCP), the passive state, the corrosion uncertainty, and the 90% probability of corrosion state of the steel rebars in the concrete were monitored by ESSRE. From the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) method, severe corrosion was observed at the exposure period of 1510, 1847, 2350, and 3020 h for C10, C15, C20, and C30 concrete, respectively. The results confirm that the ESSRE can be useful to identify the corrosion occurrence and severe corrosion of steel rebar embedded in different cover depth concrete structures.

  • The corrosion inhibition properties of conifer cone (Pinus resinosa) extract were studied in synthetic concrete pore solutions (SCPS) with and without chloride environments by electrochemical methods. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) revealed that the conifer cone (CC) extract showed promising inhibition behavior by diminishing the corrosion rate of steel rebar both solutions i.e. with and without chloride. The extract of conifer cone hinders the corrosion reaction between steel rebar and aggressive ions. Further, it can be verified that the up to 1000mg.L-1 of CC extract can able to reduce the corrosion rate of steel rebar in chloride contaminated concrete.

  • In this study, the optimum amount of hybrid inhibitors i.e. L-Arginine (LA) and sodium phosphate tribasic dodecahydrate (SP), applied for carbon steel rebar in simulated pore concrete (SCP) solution contaminated with 3.5 wt.% NaCl, was discovered. The corrosion inhibition performance of hybrid inhibitors was investigated by open circuit potential (OCP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and potentiodynamic polarization. The highest corrosion inhibition efficiency was found as 99.52% corresponding to 2% LA and 0.25% SP after 210 h exposure. Anodic type inhibition action was confirmed by potentiodynamic polarization study.   • In the present study, Al-Zn coating was deposited by Arc thermal (AT) and plasma arc thermal (PAT) spray processes, and their corrosion characteristics were studied in 3.5% NaCl through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and mechanical tests. The bond adhesion result showed that plasma arc sprayed coating had a higher value attributed to compact, dense, and less porous coating compared to arc thermal spray coating which contains defects/pores and uneven morphology as revealed by scanning electron microscope analysis. Electrochemical results revealed that the plasma arc sprayed coating had a high polarization resistance at early stage of immersion, suggesting its excellent corrosion protection performance.

  • Crystallized $LiMn_{2-y}Mg_{y}O_4$ powder was prepared by calcing the mixture of LiOH.$H_2O$, $MnO_2$ and MgO at $800^{\circ}C$ for 36h in an air atmosphere. The structure of $LiMn_{2-y}Mg_{y}O_4$ crystallites was analyzed from powder X-ray diffraction data as a cubic spinel, space group Fd3m. Though all cathode material showed spinel phase based on cubic phase in X-ray diffraction, other peaks gradually exhibited and became intense with increasing y value in $LiMn_{2-y}Mg_{y}O_4$. However, ununiform which calculated by (111) face and (222) face was constant in spite of the increase of y value, except pure $LiMn_2O_4$. AC impedance of Li/$LiMn_{2-y}Mg_{y}O_4$ cells revealed the similar resistance of about $70\Omega$ before cycling. In addition, The impedance of Li/$LiMn_{1.9}Mg_{0.1}O_4$ cell changed during charge and discharge or after cycling.

Improved structures of stainless steel current collector increase power generation of microbial fuel cells by decreasing cathodic charge transfer impedance

  • Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is an innovative environmental and energy system that converts organic wastewater into electrical energy. For practical implementation of MFC as a wastewater treatment process, a number of limitations need to be overcome. Improving cathodic performance is one of major challenges, and introduction of a current collector can be an easy and practical solution. In this study, three types of current collectors made of stainless steel (SS) were tested in a single-chamber cubic MFC. The three current collectors had different contact areas to the cathode (P $1.0cm^2$; PC $4.3cm^2$; PM $6.5cm^2$) and increasing the contacting area enhanced the power and current generations and coulombic and energy recoveries by mainly decreasing cathodic charge transfer impedance. Application of the SS mesh to the cathode (PM) improved maximum power density, optimum current density and maximum current density by 8.8%, 3.6% and 6.7%, respectively, comparing with P of no SS mesh. The SS mesh decreased cathodic polarization resistance by up to 16%, and cathodic charge transfer impedance by up to 39%, possibly because the SS mesh enhanced electron transport and oxygen reduction reaction. However, application of the SS mesh had little effect on ohmic impedance.

스크린 프린팅 탄소 전극의 이리듐 산화물 표면 개질과 이의 임피던스 센서 응용 (Surface Modification of a Screen-printed Carbon Electrode with Iridium Oxide and Its Application of an Impedance Sensor)

  • 본 연구에서는 스크린 프린팅 공정을 통해 탄소 잉크 기반의 2상 전극을 제작하고, 전극 표면에 이리듐 산화물(IrOx)을 코팅함으로써 전극의 분극 현상을 제어할 수 있는 임피던스 센서를 개발하였다. IrOx는 순환 전압 전류법으로 탄소 전극의 표면 위에 순환 수(0~50 cycles)에 따라서 코팅되었다. 전자주사현미경을 이용하여 cycle 수가 증가할수록 IrOx 입자의 크기와 수가 증가하는 경향성을 확인하였다. 전기화학 임피던스 분석을 이용하여 상기 제조된 센서들의 NaCl 농도에 따른 임피던스 변화 값을 조사하였다. 50 cycle에서 제조된 센서가 가장 우수한 결정계수와 재현성을 나타내었으며, 이는 분극 현상이 잘 제어되었기 때문이다. 실제 용액 샘플들을 이용한 삼투압 장비와 비교 측정 실험을 수행함으로써 IrOx 기반 센서의 안구건조증 진단 센서로의 활용가치를 증명하였다.
