  • We characterized nanoelectrode arrays prepared from self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) by adsorption from a solution containing thiolated $\beta$-cyclodextrin ($\beta$-CD) and n-alkanethiol on the gold electrode surface, using electrochemical methods. While the framework, the n-hexadecanethiol SAM, effectively blocked electron transfer between the electrode surface and solution-phase redox probe molecules, the $\beta$-CD cavities isolated in the forests of n-hexadecanethiol molecules were shown to act as an ultramicroelectrode array. The shapes of cyclic voltammograms of probe molecules were related to the number densities of $\beta$-CD molecules within the monolayer films. Probe molecules that have the correct combination of physical and chemical characteristics were shown to effectively penetrate the framework through the $\beta$-CD pores and exchange electrons with the electrode surface.

  • A solid state Hg(Au)/HgO reference electrode was prepared utilizing gold amalgam solid particles. Solid fine powder of the gold amalgam was prepared by chemical reduction of Au(III) with NaBH4 followed by reduction of Hg(II) in the presence of gold fine particles. The solid content in the suspension of the gold amalgam particles and fine mercury oxide particles in DMF containing PVC was precipitated by the addition of a large amount of water to give solid Hg(Au)/HgO/PVC mixture. After drying, the mixture was pressure-molded to a physically stable Hg(Au)/HgO composite reference electrode material. The electrochemical characteristics of the electrode as a reference electrode were very similar to an ordinary Hg/HgO reference electrode. The electrode material can be molded and fabricated in any desired shape and size. The surface can be renewed by a simple polishing process whenever contaminated or deactivated. The applicability of the electrode in the electrochemical detection of carbohydrates after anion exchange separation was evaluated.

  • This study has investigated the effects of the etching method of a Ti substrate for a metal oxide electrode on the electrochemical characteristics of the electrode. The HCl etching develops a fine and homogeneous roughness on the Ti substrate. Fabrication and material properties of the catalytic oxide electrode, which is known to be so effective to destruct refractory organics in aqueous waste, were studied. A method to enhance the fabrication reproducibility of the oxide electrode was tested for Ru, Zr, Sn oxide on the Ti substrate using SEM, XRD, Cyclic voltammetry.

  • To obtain the relation in the electrochemical reduction of $CO_2$ in aqueous $KHCO_3$ colution between an activity for the product and the nature of Cu electrode, the electrode surface was characterized by using two methods: X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and photoelectron emission (PE) measurement. Electrolyses were performed with Cu electrodes pretreated in several ways. The distribution of the products changed drastically with electrolysis time and the pretreatment method. The features in XPS spectra were closely connected with the product distribution. The oxide film at the electrode surface was gradually reduced to bare Cu metal with electrolysis time, resulting in a variation of the product distribution. PE was measured by verying the wavelength of incident light at several temperatures. The dependence of PE on the measurement temperature changed greatly before and after electrolysis.

  • In this work, we propose techniques for estimating the SOC of Li-air battery. First, we describe and explain the operation principle of the Li-air battery. Energy density of the Li-air battery was compared with that of the Li-ion battery. The capacity and impedance value of the fully discharged voltage is analyzed, and the OCV value for SOC estimation is measured through the electrochemical characterization of the Li-air battery. Estimation value is obtained by SOC modeling through extended Kaman filter and is compared with the measurement value from the Coulomb counting method. Moreover, the performance of SOC estimation circuit is evaluated.

  • In the research fields of energy storage, and more specifically of supplying high powers, electrochemical supercapacitor have been among the most studied systems for many years. One of the possible applications is in electric vehicles. We have been working on electronically conducting polymers for use as active materials for electrodes in supercapacitors. These polymers have the ability of doping and undoping with rather fast kinetics and have an excellent capacity for energy storage. polythiophene (Pth) and polyparafluorophenylthiophene (PFPT) have been chemically synthesized for use as active materials in supercapacitor electrodes. Electrochemical characterization has been performed by cyclic voltammetry and an electrode study has been achieved to get the maximun capacity out of the polymers and give good cyclability. specific capacity values of 7mAh/g and 40mAh/g were obtained for PFPT and polythiophene, respectively. Supercapacitors have been built to characterize this type of system. Energy storage levels of 260F/g were obtained with Pth and 110F/g with PFPT

  • Tetradentate Schiff base ligands derived from 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde and aliphatic diamine have been synthesized. Cu(Ⅱ) complexes of Schiff base ligands have been synthesized from the free ligands and copper acetate. The mole ratio of ligand to copper was identified to be 1:1 by the result of elemental analysis and Cu(Ⅱ) complexes were in a four-coordinated configuration. The electrochemical redox process of Cu(Ⅱ) complexes in a DMF solution has been investigated by cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, differential pulse voltammetry, and controlled potential coulometry. The redox process of Cu(Ⅱ) complexes is one electron transfer process in quasi-reversible and diffusion-controlled reaction. The electrochemical redox potentials and the kinetic parameters of Cu(Ⅱ) complexes are affected by the chelate ring of Schiff base ligands.

  • Surface films formed prior to bulk reduction of lithium have been studied at gold, platinum, and copper electrodes in rigorously dried propylene carbonate solutions using electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) and secondary ion mass spectrometry experiments. The results indicate that the passive film formation takes place at a potential as positive as about 2.0 V vs. Li/Li+ , and the passive film thus formed in this potential region is thicker than a monolayer. Quantitative analysis of the EQCM results indicates that electrogenerated lithium reacts with solvent molecules to produce a passive film consisting of lithium carbonate and other compounds of larger molecular weights. The presence of lithium carbonate is verified by SIMS, whereas the lithium compounds of low molecular weights, including lithium hydroxide and oxide, are not detected. Further lithium reduction takes place underneath the passive film at potentials lower than 1.2 V with a voltammetric current peak at about 0.6 V.

  • Single-crystal Ni-rich NCM is a material that has drawn attention in the field of lithium-ion batteries due to its high energy density and long cycle life. In this study, we investigated the properties of single-crystal NCM 811 and its potential for use in lithium-ion batteries. High-quality single crystals of NCM 811 were successfully synthesized by crystal growth via a flux method. The single-crystal nature of the samples was confirmed through detailed characterization techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction with Rietveld refinement. The crystal structure and electrochemical performances of the single-crystal NCM 811 were analyzed and compared to its poly-crystal counterpart. The results indicated that single-crystal NCM 811 had electrochemical performance and thermal stability superior to poly-crystalline NCM 811, making it a suitable candidate for high-performance batteries. The findings of this study contribute to a better understanding of the characteristics and potential of single-crystal NCM 811 for lithium-ion batteries.
