We investigated technological trends in an electrocardiogram (ECG)-based biometric cryptosystem that uses physiological features of ECG signals to provide personally identifiable cryptographic key generation and authentication services. The following technical details of the cryptosystem were investigated and analyzed: preprocessing of ECG signals, extraction of personally identifiable features, generation of quantified encryption keys from ECG signals, reproduction of ECG encryption keys under time-varying noise, and new security applications based on ECG signals. The cryptosystem can be used as a security technology to protect users from hacking, information leakage, and malfunctioning attacks in wearable/implantable medical devices, wireless body area networks, and mobile healthcare services.

A novel heart beat interval estimation algorithm is presented based on parabola approximation method. This paper presented a two-step processing scheme; a first stage is finding R-peak in the Electrocardiogram (ECG) by Shannon energy envelope estimator and a secondary stage is computing the interpolated peak location by parabola approximation. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm performs better than with the previous method using low sampled ECG signals.
The electrocardiogram (ECG) measurement system consists of I/O interface to input the ECG signals from two electrodes, FPGA (Field programmable gate arrays) module to process the signal conditioning, and real time module to control the system. The algorithms based on wavelet transform were developed to remove the noise of the ECG signals and to determine the QRS-waves. Triangular wave tests were conducted to determine the optimal factors of the wavelet filter by analyzing the SNRs (signal to noise ratios) and RMSEs (root mean square errors). The hybrid rule, soft method, and symlets of order 5 were selected as thresholding rule, thresholding method, and mother wavelet, respectively. The developed wavelet filter showed good performance to remove the noise of the triangular waves with 10.98 dB of SNR and 0.140 mV of RMSE. The ECG signals from a total of 6 subjects were measured at different measuring postures such as lying, sitting, and standing. The durations of QRS-waves, the amplitudes of R-waves, the intervals of RR-waves were analyzed by using the finite impulse response (FIR) filter and the developed wavelet filter. The wavelet filter showed good performance to determine the features of QRS-waves, but the FIR filter had some problems to detect the peaks of Q and S waves. The measuring postures affected accuracy and precision of the ECG signals. The noises of the ECG signals were increased due to the movement of the subject during measurement. The results showed that the wavelet filter was a useful tool to remove the noise of the ECG signals and to determine the features of the QRS-waves.

Biometric technologies have become widely available in many different fields. However, biometric technologies using existing physical features such as fingerprints, facial features, irises, and veins must consider forgery and alterations targeting them through fraudulent physical characteristics such as fake fingerprints. Thus, a trend toward next-generation biometric technologies using behavioral biometrics of a living person, such as bio-signals and walking characteristics, has emerged. Accordingly, in this study, we developed a bio-signal authentication algorithm using electrocardiogram (ECG) signals, which are the most uniquely identifiable form of bio-signal available. When using ECG signals with our system, the personal identification and authentication accuracy are approximately 90% during a state of rest. When using fingerprints alone, the equal error rate (EER) is 0.243%; however, when fusing the scores of both the ECG signal and fingerprints, the EER decreases to 0.113% on average. In addition, as a function of detecting a presentation attack on a mobile phone, a method for rejecting a transaction when a fake fingerprint is applied was successfully implemented.
This work develops a monitoring system for the population with health concerns. A belt integrated with an on-body circuit and sensors measures a wearer's selected vital signals. The electrocardiogram sensors monitor heart conditions and an accelerometer assesses the level of physical activity. Sensed signals are transmitted to the circuit module through digital yarns and are forwarded to a mobile device via Bluetooth. An interactive application, installed on the mobile device, is used to process the received signals and provide users with real-time feedback about their status. Persuasive functions are designed and implemented in the interactive application to encourage users' physical activity. Two signal processing algorithms are developed to analyze the data regarding heart and activity. A user study is conducted to evaluate the performance and usability of the developed system.
The health of the human heart is commonly measured using ECG (Electrocardiography) signals. To identify any anomaly in the human heart, the time-sequence of ECG signals is examined manually by a cardiologist or cardiac electrophysiologist. Lightweight anomaly detection on ECG signals in an embedded system is expected to be popular in the near future, because of the increasing number of heart disease symptoms. Some previous research uses deep learning networks such as LSTM and BiLSTM to detect anomaly signals without any handcrafted feature. Unfortunately, lightweight LSTMs show low precision and heavy LSTMs require heavy computing powers and volumes of labeled dataset for symptom classification. This paper proposes an ECG anomaly detection system based on two level BiLSTM for acceptable precision with lightweight networks, which is lightweight and usable at home. Also, this paper presents a new threshold technique which considers statistics of the current ECG pattern. This paper's proposed model with BiLSTM detects ECG signal anomaly in 0.467 ~ 1.0 F1 score, compared to 0.426 ~ 0.978 F1 score of the similar model with LSTM except one highly noisy dataset.

Power line noise in electrocardiogram signals makes it difficult to diagnose cardiovascular disease. ECG signals without power line noise are needed to increase the accuracy of diagnosis. In this paper, it is proposed DNN(Deep Neural Network) model to remove the power line noise in ECG. The proposed model is learned with noisy ECG, and clean ECG. Performance of the proposed model were performed in various environments(varying amplitude, frequency change, real-time amplitude change). The evaluation used signal-to-noise ratio and root mean square error (RMSE). The difference in evaluation metrics between the noisy ECG signals and the de-noising ECG signals can demonstrate effectiveness as the de-noising model. The proposed DNN model learning result was a decrease in RMSE 0.0224dB and a increase in signal-to-noise ratio 1.048dB. The results performed in various environments showed a decrease in RMSE 1.7672dB and a increase in signal-to-noise ratio 15.1879dB in amplitude changes, a decrease in RMSE 0.0823dB and a increase in signal-to-noise ratio 4.9287dB in frequency changes. Finally, in real-time amplitude changes, RMSE was decreased 0.3886dB and signal-to-noise ratio was increased 11.4536dB. Thus, it was shown that the proposed DNN model can de-noise power line noise in ECG.

In this paper, an improved algorithm for the extraction of respiration signal from the electrocardiogram (ECG) is proposed. The whole system consists of two-lead electrocardiogram acquisition (lead Ⅰ and Ⅱ), baseline fluctuation elimination, R-wave detection, adjustment of sudden change in R-wave area using moving average, and optimal lead selection. In order to solve the problem of previous algorithms for the ECG-derived respiration (EDR) signal acquisition, we proposed a method for the optimal lead selection. An optimal EDR signal among the three EDR signals derived from each lead (and arctangent of their ratio) is selected by estimating the instantaneous frequency using the Hilbert transform, and then choosing the signal with minimum variation of the instantaneous frequency. The proposed algorithm was tested on 15 subjects, and we could obtain satisfactory respiration signals that shows high correlation (r>0.9) with the signal acquired from the chest-belt respiration sensor.

The photoplethysmogram (PPG) signal is one of the mainly considered bio signals along with the electrocardiogram (ECG) signal. PPG signals can be used to estimate the speed of flow of blood in vein, saturation of peripheral oxygen and etc. The heartbeat rate is a common feature in order to evaluate those checkup lists. To estimate the correct heartbeat rate, dynamic noises must be removed in the PPG signal. Conventionally, the acceleration signal is used to remove dynamic noises. This method, however, increases the computational complexity. In this paper, we proposes a solution that uses only PPG signals to calculate the heartbeat rate, and which can be used as a basement in real-time healthcare solution.
In this paper, we propose an effective compression method for electrocardiogram(ECG) signals. 1-D ECG signals are reconstructed to 2-D ECG data by period and complexity sorting schemes with image compression techniques to Increase inter and intra-beat correlation. The proposed method added block division and mean-period normalization techniques on top of conventional 2-D data ECG compression methods. JPEG 2000 is chosen for compression of 2-D ECG data. Standard MIT-BIH arrhythmia database is used for evaluation and experiment. The results show that the proposed method outperforms compared to the most recent literature especially in case of high compression rate.
