Electro-optical Characteristics of VA mode LCOS depending on Cell Gap (VA Mode의 LCOS에서 Cell Gap의 변화에 따른 전기광학적 특성)

  • The electro-optical characteristics of the Liquid Crystal on Silicon (hereinafter "LCOS") micro-display on vertically alignment (VA) mode were studied depending on various cell gaps. 5 different cell gaps, such as $1.4{\mu}m,\;1.8{\mu}m,\;2.1{\mu}m,\;2.4{\mu}m$ and $2.8{\mu}m$, were selected. The reflectance-voltage (R-V) characteristics, distributions of reflected light and reflectance were calculated with 3-dimmensional LC code. At the center of cell, the smallest $1.4{\mu}m$ cell gap showed the lowest reflectance and the largest $2.8{\mu}m$ cell gap showed the highest reflectance due to the surface anchoring effect. In case of $2.1{\mu}m$ cell gap, the sum of reflectance overall cell was the highest value. Considering the reflectance and RV curve characteristic, the optimized cell gap was $2.1{\mu}m$.

  • We have developed new reflective LCD for Mixed twist nematic LC mode with high quality image. We have found out an optimal twist angle of LC and optical film's axis by simulation. Also we measured electro-optic characteristics for new design panel. As a result, high reflectance and wide viewing angle characteristics were achieved.

  • The electro-optical characteristics of the Liquid Crystal on Silicon (hereinafter "LCOS") micro-display on vertically alignment (VA) mode were studied with 3-dimensional LC code. 5 different cell gaps, such as 1.4 ${\mu}m$, 1.8 ${\mu}m$, 2.1 ${\mu}m$, 2.4 ${\mu}m$ and 2.8 ${\mu}m$, were selected. The reflectance-voltage (R-V) characteristics, distribution of reflected light, reflectance, optical fill factor and contrast ratio were calculated and investigated depending on various cell gaps. Due to the surface anchoring effect, higher cell gap showed higher reflectance. However, considering the optical fill factor and contrast ratio, middle-height 2.1 ${\mu}m$ showed the best electro-optical characteristic. 0.7 inch Full-HD LCOS panels having same geometry and material property were fabricated. The reflected light intensity and contrast ratio were measured and the measured results were well-matched to the calculated results.

  • A user friendly computer code(EMCOMST; Electro-Magnetic response for COMposite STructures) was developed which provides with computations of the response characteristics such as reflectance and transmittance to the incident wave angles, frequencies, composite thicknesses, ply orientations, and types of backplate as the linearly polarized transverse electro-magnetic wave is emitted to the advanced composite structures. In this investigation were reviewed the electromagnetic characteristics of the continuous orthotropic fiber-reinforced organic matrix composites with or without ferrite fillers, which are actively applied to low-weight and high-strength aircraft structures. Also were calculated the response of the three layered compound structures which have appropriately stacked above-mentioned materials as transmitting layer, absorbing layer, reflection layer, respectively under the specific thickness constraints for mechanical strength design requirements. For the composite structures presented in this study, minimum reflectance value less than -5㏈ can be obtained in the frequency range of 4 to 12 ㎓. In addition, analysis of structures attached isotropic radar absorbing materials(RAM) is facilitated by putting the material properties in the material input card entries adequately.

  • We investigated the effects of piezoelectric field on the electro-absorption characteristics in InGaN/GaN multiple-quantum well (MQW) green light emitting diodes (LED). Double crystal X-ray diffraction measurement was performed to study the crystalline property and indium (In) composition in the MQW active layer. To measure the electro-luminescence and electro-reflectance (ER) spectroscopy, we fabricated the $1{\times}1\;mm^2$ large-area green LED chip. The piezoelectric field inside the LED structure was evaluated from the Vcomp in active layer by the ER spectra. Finally, we analyzed the electro-absorption characteristics of the green LED by using the photo-current spectroscopy.

Electro-optical Characteristics of Full-HD LCOS Depending on the Trench Structure between Adjacent Pixels (Full-HD LCOS의 이웃한 픽셀 사이의 Trench구조 변화에 따른 전기광학적 특성 분석)

  • In order to check the validation of LC simulation, 0.7 inch LCOS panel in full-HD resolution was fabricated and used for the electro-optical measurement. Compared the measured data with the calculated data, the averaged difference was 1.72% under 0 ~ +6 V bias on pixel electrode. To improve the optical characteristics of full-HD LCOS panel, the planar structure and trench structures (0.1 um, 0.2 um and 0.3 um-in-depth) between adjacent pixels were investigated with LC simulation. The planar structure showed the higher reflectance and faster reflectance-voltage response time than the trench structure. The optical fill factor and contrast ratio of planar structure were also higher than those of trench structures. As compared 1 um-in-depth trench structure resembled to the real structure with the planar structure, the optical fill factor was improved by 1.15% and the contrast ratio was improved by 5.26%. In order to minimize the loss of luminance and contrast ratio, the planar structure need to be applied between adjacent pixels.

Morphology and Electro-Optical Property of Mo Back Electrode for CuInGaSe2 Solar Cells (CuInGaSe2 태양전지용 Mo 후면 전극의 조직 및 전기광학적 특성)

  • Mo thin films were used for the back electrode because of the low resistivity in the Mo/$CuInGaSe_2$ contact in chalcopyrite solar cells. $1\;{\mu}m$ thick Mo thin films were deposited on soda lime glass by varying the Ar pressure with the dc-magnetron sputtering process. The effects of the Ar pressure on the morphology of the Mo back electrode were studied and the relationships between the morphology and electro-optical properties, namely, the resistivity as well as the reflectance of the Mo thin films, were investigated. The resitivity increased from $24\;{\mu}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ to $11833\;{\mu}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$; this was caused by the increased surface defect and low crystallinity as the Ar pressure increased from $3{\times}10^{-3}$ to $3{\times}10^{-2}\;Torr$. The surface morphologies of the Mo thin films changed from somewhat coarse fibrous structures to irregular and fine celled structures with increased surface cracks along the cell boundaries, as the Ar pressure increased from $3{\times}10^{-3}$ to $3{\times}10^{-2}\;Torr$. The changes of reflectances in the visible light range with Ar pressures were mainly attributed to the surface morphological changes of the Mo thin films. The reflectance in the visible light range showed the highest value of 45% at $3{\times}10^{-3}\;Torr$ and decreased to 18.5% at $3{\times}10^{-2}\;Torr$.

Pulsed Terahertz Emission and Detection Properties from ZnTe Crystal (ZnTe 결정을 이용한 테라헤르츠파의 발생 및 검출 특성)

  • Pulsed terahertz (THz) radiation was generated by optical rectification and detected by a fee space electro-optic sampling (FS-EOS) method. We used ZnTe (110) crystals for both generation and detection. By coating dielectric anti-reflection film on the ZnTe crystal surface, we can reduce the reflectance of a pump laser beam from $30\%$ to $2\%$, and the terahertz pulse amplitude increased $27\%$ compared with an uncoated crystal. A wider bandwidth of THz radiation was obtained by using a thinner crystal but the signal intensity was decreased in this case. And variations of THz radiation by changing orientation of the ZnTe crystal with respect to the pump (or probe) laser polarization, and by changing the power of the pump laser have also been investigated and discussed.

  • We have performed computer simulation to obtain electro-optic characteristics of reflective hybrid aligned nematic liquid crystal displays (LCDs) driven by fringe field. The results show that the optimal retardation value (dΔn) of the cell is 0.289 ${\mu}$m, which allows for the cell to have a practical cell gap of larger than 3 ${\mu}$m when manufacturing. A reflectance of the dark state is only 0.114 % for an incident light 550 nm. At this condition, the light efficiency of white state reaches 92.7 %. The display with optimized cell parameters shows that the contrast ratio greater than 5 exists over 600 of polar angle in all directions and lower driving voltage than that of fringe-field driven homogeneously aligned reflective LCD.

  • The fringe electric field driven transflective liquid crystal display with dual orientation has a problem that the voltage-dependent transmittance and reflectance curves do not match each other, requiring a dual driving circuit to achieve a high electro-optic performance. Optimizations of the electrode structure in the array substrate and rubbing direction solve this problem so that the transflective display with a single gap and a single gamma curve for reflective and transmissive region is possible.
