  • A rigorous electro-optical simulation and ray tracing for an electric field driven liquid crystal Fresnel lens was proposed to obtain design parameters of the electrode pattern of the Fresnel lens. The optimal design was carried out using Taguchi's experimental method for 17.1"($368{\times}229.5$ mm) wide LCD panels with 9 views. For the calculation of the distribution of liquid crystal molecules and the optical transmission of the panel, finite difference method and extended Jones matrix method were used to deal effectively with highly nonlinear and complicated motional equations of the liquid crystal molecules and to obtain the oblique transmission characteristics of the LCD panel. As simulation results, the optimal lengths of the 3 electrodes of the Fresnel lens are 4.0 ${\mu}m$, 30 ${\mu}m$ and 83 ${\mu}m$, respectively, and the locations of the second and third electrodes are 32.9-33.0 ${\mu}m$ and 45.9-46.0 ${\mu}m$, respectively. The optimal applied voltage of the 3 electrodes are found to be 5.75 V, 7.80 V and 11.9 V, respectively.

  • Surveillance and reconnaissance intelligence in the space domain will become increasingly important in future battlefield environments. Moreover, to assimilate the military provocations and trends of hostile countries, imagery intelligence of the highest possible resolution is required. There are many methods for improving the resolution of optical satellites when observing the ground, such as designing satellite optical systems with a larger diameter and lowering the operating altitude. In this paper, we propose a method for improving ground observation resolution by using an optical system for a previously designed low orbit satellite and lowering the operating altitude of the satellite. When the altitude of a satellite is reduced in a circular orbit, a large amount of thrust fuel is required to maintain altitude because the satellite's altitude can decrease rapidly due to atmospheric drag. However, by using the critical inclination, which can fix the position of the perigee in an elliptical orbit to the observation area, the operating altitude of the satellite can be reduced using less fuel compared to a circular orbit. This method makes it possible to obtain a similar observational resolution of a medium-sized satellite with the same weight and volume as a small satellite. In addition, this method has the advantage of reducing development and launch costs to that of a small-sized satellite. As a result, we designed an elliptical orbit. The perigee of the orbit is 300 km, the apogee is 8,366.52 km, and the critical inclination is 116.56°. This orbit remains at its lowest altitude to the Korean peninsula constantly with much less orbit maintenance fuel compared to the 300 km circular orbit.

  • An Electro-Optical Tracking System (EOTS) is an electric optical system with EO/IR cameras, laser sensors, and an IMU. The EOTS calculates coordinates of targets, using attitude and acceleration measured by the IMU. In particular for an armed aircraft, the performance of the weapon system depends on how quickly and accurately it acquires the target coordinates. The IMU should be operated after alignment is complete, to meet the coordinate accuracy required by the weapon system so the initial stabilization time of the IMU should be reduced, by quickly measuring the attitude and acceleration. Alignment is the process of determining the initial attitude by resolving the attitude error of the IMU, and the IMU of mission equipment such as an airborne EOTS, uses velocity matching based on the velocity from GPS/INS for aircraft navigation. In this paper, a method is presented to improve the transfer alignment performance of the airborne EOTS, by maneuvering aircraft and the mission equipment. First, the performance factor of the alignment was identified, as a heading error through the velocity matching model and simulation results. Then acceleration maneuvers and attitude changes were necessary, to correct the error. As a result of flight tests applied to an EOTS on a OOO aircraft system, the transfer alignment performance was improved as the duration time was decreased, by more than five times when the aircraft accelerated by more than 0.2g and the EOTS was moving until 6.7deg/s.

  • In this paper, the optical axis alignment(OAA) of an infrared sensor(IRS) using a microwave sensor(MWS) was presented as a method of an axis alignment to minimize the problems that could be caused by the misalignment of the two sensors in the missile including the dual-mode sensor. The azimuth(AZ) and elevation(EL) angles of the two targets used for each sensor test were calculated by using the transformation equation and the test results of the MWS and IRS, and then the proposed OAA was verified by comparing the angles. Furthermore, the validity of the proposed OAA was demonstrated by confirming the abnormality of the OAA through the test results of the electro optical head(EOH) of the IRS which was equipped with a tilt on the missile fuselage.

  • This is an example we generally have a variety of equipment that can detect and track the targets and track them quickly and accurately through the information exchange among each piece of equipment. These equipment have similar detection areas (FOV), but some are different due to the limit of the resolution of the equipment. In this paper, we studied the method of reducing detection time and tracking the targets automatically.

  • Considerable attention has been focused on the applications of flexible liquid crystal (LC)-based displays because of their many potential advantages, such as portability, durability, light weight, thin packaging, flexibility, and low power consumption. To develop flexible LCDs that are capable of delivering high-quality moving images, like conventional glass-substrate LCDs, the LC device structure must have a stable alignment layer of LC molecules, concurrently support uniform cell gaps, and tightly bind two flexible substrates under external tension. However, stable LC molecular alignment has not been achieved because of the layerless LC alignment, and consequently high-quality images cannot be guaranteed. To solve these critical problems, we have proposed a PDMS pixel-wall based bonding method via the IB irradiation was developed for fasten the two substrates together strongly and maintain uniform cell gaps. The effect of the IB irradiation on PDMS with PI surface was also evaluated by side structure configuration and a result of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis of PDMS interlayer as a function of binder with substrates. large number of PDMS pixel-walls are tightly fastened to the surface of each flexible substrate and could maintain a constant cell gap between the LC molecules without using any other epoxy or polymer. To enhance the electro-optical performance of the LC device, we applied an alignment method that creates pretilt angle on the PI surface via ion beam irradiation. Using this approach, our flexible LCDs have a contrast ratio of 132:1 and a response time of about 15 ms, resulting in highly reliable electro-optical performance in the bent state, comparable to that of glass-substrate LCDs.

  • In this paper, we intend to make fringe-field switching (FFS) mode cell by the ion beam (IB) alignment method on the a-C:H thin film, to analyze electro-optical characteristics in this cell. We studied on the suitable inorganic thin film for fringe-field switching (FFS) cell and the aligning capabilities of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) using the alignment material of a-C:H thin film as working gas at 30 W rf bias condition. A high pretilt angle of about 5 $^{\circ}C$ by ion beam (IB) exposure on the a-C:H thin film surface was measured. Consequently, the high pretilt angle and the good thermal stability of LC alignment by the IB alignment method on the a-C:H thin film surface as working gas at 30 W rf bias condition can be achieved. An excellent voltage-transmittance (V -T) and response time curve of the IE-aligned FFS-LCD was observed with oblique IB exposure on the a-C:H thin films. Also, AC V-T hysteresis characteristics of the IB-aligned FFS-LCD with IE exposure on the a-C:H thin films is almost the same as that of the rubbing-aligned FFS cell on a polyimide (PI) surface.

  • The pi-cell [1] is known as one of the candidates for a fast response time and a good viewing angle characteristics due to a self-compensated configuration and can be a replaceable mode instead of the current TN mode and the IPS mode for moving picture in future. This paper shows the optimized condition to maintain bend state instead of splay state, which is mortal demerit for good optical properties in a pi-cell, by using the polymer stabilized method [2]. The good electro-optical characteristics are also obtained by optimizing the various factors, which are monomer concentration in a LC, UV intensity, curing time, curing voltage, and curing temperature, and by using retardation film. We use a scanning electron microscope to study the structures of the polymer stabilized polymer network in a pi-cell as a key to figure out why bend state is occurred.

  • We present measurements of the Brillouin frequency shift in an optical fiber using a 1550 nm distributed feedback laser diode(DFB-LD) as a light source. By modulating the probe light with an electro-optic modulator, we confirm the stimulated Brillouin gain spectrum(BGS) and spontaneous BGS using the coherent detection method. We also confirm the applicability of the technique to distributed temperature sensors that measure the change in Brillouin frequency shift due to temperature variations.
