In this paper, we have proposed a principle to design a compact and temperature independent electro-optic switch based on a slotted photonic crystal directional coupler (SPCDC). Infiltration of the slotted silicon photonic crystal with polymer enhances the slow light and decreases the switching length, whereas the different signs of thermo-optic coefficients of the polymer and silicon make the proposed switch stable within $25^{\circ}C$ to $85^{\circ}C$ temperature range. The SPCDC structure is modified to increase poling efficiency of the polymer in the slot and to flatten the dispersion diagram of the even mode to minimize the switching length.
Integrated-optic polarization controlling devices such as polarizers, polarization splitters, and polarization converters, are proposed and demonstrated in nonlinear optic polymers. Poling-induced birefringence in electro-optic polymers is exploited to fabricate the devices. The polymeric waveguide polarizers show low excess losses, and extinction ratios of 20.7 dB and 17.1 dB for TM-pass and TE-pass polarizers, respectively. The polymeric waveguide polarization splitters exhibit TE-TM mode splittings with crosstalk of 14.2 dB and 10.1 dB for TM and TE mode splittings, respectively. The polymeric waveguide polarization converters show successful TE/TM polarization mode conversion with conversion efficiencies of higher than 30 dB. The device employs poling-induced waveguides which have slowly rotating azimuth angle of optic axis along the light propagation direction. The novel polarization converter is insensitive to wavelength and easier to fabricate than the other polarization converters containing periodic structures.

In this paper, the possibility of interferometric shows very good linearity to the strain. Fiber optic sensors have various merits for health monitoring systems. They are very small in diamerter. So, they don't give any disturbance in strength to the structures, Optical fiber sensors are innert to the electro-magnetic field. Therefore, fiber optic sensors give us a good solution to the electro-magnetic field. Therefore, fiber optic sensors give us a good solution to the maintainance systems of the structures, which are exposed to the electric fields, such as bridges, dams and buildings.
In this paper, we describe the electro-optic effects of photonic crystals made of a synthetic opal filled with a nematic liquid crystal(LC). By applying an external electric field, a shift in the Bragg reflection peak position(stop band) and a field-induced change in its peak reflectivity are observed. These significant surface alignment effects of the opal-LC composite are discussed in a similar manner for Freederick-type transitions of LC within a confined geometry in the presence of external fields.
As the physical properties of nematic liquid crystals vary with respect to temperature, the performances of liquid crystal displays (LCDs) are highly dependent on temperature. Additionally, it is well known that the electro-optic characteristics of LCDs, such as transmittance and threshold voltage, also rely on the LCD switching modes. The temperature dependence of the electro-optic characteristics of the wide-viewing-angle LCD modes, such as in-plane switching (IPS), multidomain vertical alignment by patterned electrode (PVA), and fringe-field switching (FFS), have been studied, and the results showed that the FFS mode has lower temperature dependence compared to the IPS and PVA modes. Since the liquid crystal (LC) reorients in different ways in each mode, this result is associated with the temperature dependence of LC's bend and twist elastic constants, and also with the position of the main reorientation, either in the middle or on the surface of the LC layer.

We studied on the electro-optic characteristics and dynamic stability according to an undesirably defined pretilt angle induced in high step coverage of pixel area for the Twisted Nematic (TN) / Fringe-Field Switching (FFS) mode. In case of the TN mode, LC directors twist reversely near the edges of thin-film-transistor and black matrix where the pretilt angle of the LC is not well defined. Therefore, the voltage-dependent dynamics of the LC in TN mode is unstable and shows the bad electro-optic characteristics. On the other hand, in case of the FFS mode, the LCs are twisted parallel to the bottom substrate by fringe electric field and the electro-optic characteristic is not influenced by the pretilt angle of the LC which is not well defined.
We proposed an in situ measurement set-up and technique to measure the various electro-optic(E-O) properties of the E-O polymer. Using the proposed measurement set-up, the electro-optic effect and birefringence of unpoled side-chain E-O polymer induced by the strong dc and ac electric field were observed. The dependence of the E-O coefficients on the various poling conditions were measured with real time. To evaluate the thermal stability of the poled polymer the relaxation of the E-O effect was measured and the result was compared with well known polymer materials. The proposed measurement reduces the number of experimental steps and saves measurement time.

Electro-optic modulator (EOM) takes a vital role in connecting the electric and optical fields. Here, we present a heterogeneously integrated EOM based on the lithium niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) platform. The key modulation waveguide structure is a field-enhanced slot waveguide formed by embedding silicon nanowires in a thin-film lithium niobate (LN), which is different from the previously reported LN ridge or etchless LN waveguides. Based on such slot structure, optical mode field area is reduced and enhanced electric field in the slot region can interact well with LN material with high Electro-optic (EO) coefficient. Therefore, the improvements in both aspects have positive effects on enhancing the modulation performance. From results, the corresponding EOM by adding such modulation waveguide structure achieves better performance, where the key half-wave-voltage-length product (V𝜋L) and 3 dB EO bandwidth are 1.78 V·cm and 40 GHz under the electrode gap width of only 6 ㎛, respectively. Moreover, Lower V𝜋L can also be achieved. With these characteristics, such field-enhanced waveguide structure could further promote the development of LNOI-based EOM.

In this paper, a photonic-based microwave system technology is described, and a traveling-wave electro-optic modulator is designed and manufactured as a key component. The fabricated modulator is composed of a metal diffusion waveguide for optical transmission and a planar waveguide electrode on lithium niobate substrate for microwave transmission. The electro-optic response bandwidth of I and Q channels in a fabricated dual parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator were measured for 27.67 and 28.11 GHz, respectively. Photonic four times up-converted X-band frequency and linear frequency modulated signal were confirmed using the fabricated electro-optic modulator by S-band input signal. The confirmed broadband signal can be applied to a microwave system for surveillance and high-resolution ISAR imaging.
Tricyanopyrrolidene chromophores were prepared in order to compare their macroscopic nonlinear optical (NLO) properties with a conjugated structure through the long molecular axis. A thiophene or phenyl ring was tethered to an ethylenic bond; it may act as a lateral moiety to disrupt the planarity of a chromophore and lessen the electrostatic interaction. Thin film composites of these chromophores dissolved in amorphous polycarbonate (APC) were fabricated. Real time pole and probe method was employed to investigate the change of electro-optic (EO) signal during poling. The EO properties and their relaxation behaviors of the guest-host systems containing newly synthesized chromophores were investigated in detail.
