The purpose of this study is to verify availability of the acoustic emission in-situ monitoring method to the internal leak and operating conditions of the turbine major valves relating to safety for turbine operating and prevention of turbine trouble at nuclear power plants. In this study, acoustic emission tests are performed when the pressurized electro-hydraulic control oil flowed through turbine electro-hydraulic controller oil check valve and turbine power/trip fluid solenoid valve in the condition of actual turbine operating. The acoustic emission method was applied to the valves at the site, and the background noise was measured far the abnormal plant condition. To judge for the leak existence ell the object valves, voltage analysis and frequency analysis of acoustic signal emitted from infernal leak in the valve operating condition are performed. It was conformed that acoustic emission method could monitor for valve internal leak to high sensitivity.

Decay processes of accumulated charge in e-beam irradiated polymers during elevating temperature are observed using pulsed electro-acoustic measurement system. Since the polymeric materials have many superior properties such as light-weight, good mechanical strength, high flexibility and low cost, they are inevitable materials for spacecrafts. In space environment, however, the polymers sometimes have serious damage by irradiation of high energy charged particles. When the polymers of the spacecraft are irradiated by high energy charged particles, some of injected charges accumulate and remain for long time in the bulk of the polymers. Since the bulk charges sometimes cause the degradation or breakdown of the materials, the investigation of the charging and the decay processes in polymeric materials under change of temperature is important to decide an adequate material for the spacecrafts. By measuring the charge behavior in e-beam irradiated polymer, such as polyimide or polystyrene, it is found that the various accumulation and decay patterns are observed in each material. The results seem to be useful and be helpful to progress in the reliability of the polymers for the spacecraft.

The volume of an acoustic source is important in determining various acoustic parameters. One of the suggested techniques is the internal pressure method incorporating a loudspeaker attached to a chamber wall and a microphone inserted into the cavity. Although the method is easy to handle with a very simple measurement setup, the coupling effects between the dynamic system of the loudspeaker and acoustic field, and the effects of higher order modes introduced by the discontinuities in the acoustic field, and the effects of higher order modes introduced by the discontinuities in the acoustic field should be considered for precise result. In this study, higher order modes due to the discontinuities of loudspeaker and microphone boundaries are included and the electro-acoustic coupling effects are compensated for by using the results of two cylinders with different lengths. The volume velocity of a loudspeaker thus obtained agrees very with that measured by laser sensor.

Generally, underwater unmanned vehicle have adopted an inertial navigation system (INS), dead reckoning (DR), acoustic navigation and geophysical navigation techniques as the navigation method because GPS does not work in deep underwater environment. Even if the tactical inertial sensor can provide very detail measurement during long operation time, it is not suitable to use the tactical inertial sensor for small size and low cost UUV because the tactical inertial sensor is expensive and large. One alternative to INS is attitude heading reference system (AHRS) with the micro-machined electro mechanical system (MEMS) inertial sensor because of MEMS inertial sensor's small size and low power requirement. A cost effective and small size attitude heading reference system (AHRS) which incorporates measurements from 3-axis micro-machined electro mechanical system (MEMS) gyroscopes, accelerometers, and 3-axis magnetometers has been developed to provide a complete attitude solution for UUV. The AHRS based MEMS overcome many problems that have inhibited the adoption of inertial system for small UUV such as cost, size and power consumption. Several evaluation experiments were carried out for the validation of the developed AHRS's function and these experiments results are presented. Experiments results prove the fact that the developed MEMS AHRS satisfied the required specification.

The parameters of electric acoustic characteristic used as standards to evaluate the performance of a small microphone are composed of sensitivity, harmonic distortion, frequency response, directivity and others. Such characteristic parameters should be designed differently depending on a purpose, so it is important to verify whether a small microphone was made appropriately for the purpose after measuring the acoustic characteristics. Therefore, a system that can measure the acoustic characteristic parameters of a small microphone using DSP, not only simultaneously but also in real-time, was implemented in this paper. To verify the implemented system, four kinds of microphones were measured and the results were compared with the data values of the acoustic characteristics of each microphone. There were a little discrepancy between them because the conditions when measuring the characteristics were not identical. But it was verified that the errors are within the error tolerance and it proved that the system can be used in place of the conventional equipment used in measuring the acoustic characteristics of small microphones.

When used for broadcasting, multipurpose halls need to accommodate various types of programs such as speeches, Korean traditional music, musicals, pop music, and concerts. Therefore, multipurpose halls must meet a wide range of electric and architectural acoustic demands. However, there are few ways to alter acoustic environments for multipurpose halls, given these different demands. The current study investigates the effects of banners on acoustic environments in the presence of an acoustic shell or electric acoustic system. The results indicate that the installation of a 15% banner of wall area could vary the range of reverberation time ($T_{30}$) by 0.12 s, EDT (Early Decay Time) by 0.15 s, clarity of music ($C_{80}$) by 0.76 dB, and clarity of speech ($D_{50}$) by 6.43 % under different measurement circumstances. A computer simulation that enlarges the banner size to 40 % of the wall area varies the reverberation time from 0.11 s to 0.55 s depending on the room environment.

Ultrasonic Vibrator is designed to achieve the maximum vibration amplitude at 30 kHz by in-cluding a horn (diameter, 40 mm), mechanical vibration amplifier at the top of the ultrasonic vibrator in the system and making the complete system resonate. In addition, it is experimentally visualized by particle imaging velocimetry (PIV) that the acoustic streaming velocity in the gap is at maximum when the gap between the ultrasonic vibrator and stationary plate agrees with the multiples of half-wavelength of the ultrasonic wave. This fact results from the resonance of the sound wave and the theoretical analysis of that is also accomplished and verified by experiment. It is observed that the magnitude of the acoustic streaming dependent upon the gap between the ultrasonic vibrator and stationary plate possibly changes due to the measurement of the average velocity fields of the acoustic streaming induced by the ultrasonic vibration at resonance and non-resonance. There exists extremely small average velocity at non-resonant gaps while the relatively large average velocity exists at resonant gaps compared with non-resonant gaps. It also reveals that there should be larger axial turbulent intensity at the hub region of the vibrator and at the edge of it in the resonant gap where the air streaming velocity is maximized and the flow phenomena is conspicuous than that at the other region. Because the variation of the acoustic streaming velocity at resonant gap is more distinctive than that at non-resonant gap, shear stress increases more in the resonant gap and is also maximized at the center region of the vibrator except the local position of center (r〓0). At the non-resonant gap there should be low values of vorticity distribution, but in contrast to the non-resonant gap, high and negative values of it exist at the center region of the vibrator with respect to the radial direction and in the vicinity of the middle region with respect to the axial direction. Acoustic streaming is noise-free due to the ultrasonic vibration and maintenance-free because of the absence of moving parts. Moreover, the proposed method by acoustic streaming can be utilized to the nano and micro-electro mechanical systems as a driving mechanism in addition to the augmentation of the streaming velocity.

As a part of basic studies on monitoring of landslides and slope stability using SP measurements, micro-electric potentials of rock samples were measured accompanied with the rock failure by a uniaxial loading test were measured. The measurement system consists of a 8 channel A/D converter with 24 bit resolution, uniaxial loading tester, strain gages and 4 sets of electrode attached to a rock sample. Rock samples of granite, limestone, and sandstone were tested. Also, mortar samples were tested in order to monitor electric-potentials of a uniform sample. Micro-electric potentials were detected in all saturated samples and the strength of them increased as the loading force increased. Sandstone samples showed the largest strength of micro-electric potential and it followed limestone and granite samples, which indicates a positive relationship with porosity of rocks. The mechanism generating these micro-electric potential can be explained in terms of electro-kinetics. In case of dry samples, micro-electric potential could be observed only in sandstone samples, where piezoelectric effect played main role due to high contents of quartz in sandstone samples. We found that biggest micro-electric potentials were observed at the electrodes near the crack surface of rock samples. This is very encouraging result that SP monitoring can be applied to predicting landsliding or to estimate collapsing position combining with monitoring of acoustic emissions.
