  • In this paper, The impulse un-tripping characteristics and the electro magnetic compatibility characteristics are compared with each other. The performance of impulse un-tripping test exists at domestic standard (KSC 4613). However test items are insufficient because the more test items such as EMC exist at international standard (IEC). Also, Electric Appliances Safety Certificate has taken the certificate test since July 2004 in Korea but did not confirm the EMC performance for RCCBs made in Korea. Thus, in this paper, We experiment with Oscillatory waves immunity test and the 7 EMC tests for 32 RCCBs of 4 types (mini, home standard, plug, outlet) for 16 brands according to IEC standard 61009-1 and 61008-1. As a result, 24 RCCBs proved to be poor for surge immunity test. However the RCCBs operating incorrectly for surge immunity test operate correctly for oscillatory waves immunity test. Thus, the correlation between oscillatory waves immunity test and EMC test is little and standard for compatibility of combination surge at IEC 61000-4-5 should be added to KS standard as soon as possible.

  • This paper presents a filter analysis of conducted Electro-Magnetic Interference (EMI) in switching power converters (SPC) based on noise impedances. The EMI characteristics of SPC can be analytically deduced from a circuit theoretical viewpoint. The analytical noise model is investigated to get a full understanding of the EMI mechanism. It is shown that with suitable and justified model, filters pertinent to EMI noise is investigated. The EMI noise is identified by time domain measurements associated with an isolated half-bridge ac-dc converter. Practical filters like LC filter, ${\pi}$ filter and complete EMI filters are investigated. The proposed analysis and results can provide a guideline for improving the effectiveness of filtering schemes in SPC. Experimental results are also included to verify the validity of the proposed method. The results obtained satisfy the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) class A and class B regulations.

  • Pyrotechnic initiators provide a source of pyrotechnic energy used to initiate a variety of space mechanisms. Pyrotechnic systems build in electromagnetic environment that may lead to critical or catastrophic hazards. Special precautions are need to prevent a pulse large enough to trigger the initiator from appearing in the pyrotechnic firing circuits at any but the desired time. The EMC verification shall be shown by analysis or test that the pyrotechnic systems meets the requirements of inadvertent activation. The MIL-STD-1576 and two range safeties, AFSPC and CSG, require the safety margin for electromagnetic potential hazards to pyrotechnic systems to a level at least 20 dB below the maximum no-fire power of the EED. The PC23 is equivalent to NASA standard initiator and the 1EPWH100 squib is ESA standard initiator. This paper verifies the two safety margins for electromagnetic potential hazards. The first is verified by analyzing against a RF power. The second is verified by testing against a DC current. The EMC safety margin requirement against RF power has been demonstrated through the electric field coupling analysis in differential mode with 21 dB both PC23 and 1EPWH100, and in common mode with 58 dB for PC23 and 48 dB for 1EPWH100 against the maximum no-fire power of the EED. Also, the EMC safety margin requirement against DC current has been demonstrated through the electrical isolation test for the pyrotechnic firing circuits with greater than 20 dB below the maximum no-fire current of the EED.

  • All electric and electronic appliances require their own electromagnetic compatibility. So an industrially advanced nations have made many standards for regulation for their profits thus the researches on the electro-magnetic shielding effect(SE) are being increased. But the SE can not proved its effect by a theory alone because of complex-material problems. This study Present the correlation of the SE and immunity of radiated radio frequency of the electromagnetic field. We have analyzed the theory of shielding effect to the shield texture. It has been proved that experimental results showed this effects have intensive relations to the electromagnetic field immunity.

  • As a part of electro-mechanical totally implantable artificial heart (TIAH) program, a transcut- aneous energy transmission system has been developed. By mutual magnetic induction between the first coil on the skin and the subcutaneously implanted second coil, the system transfers elctrical power through the skin. This research aimed at minimizing the size of the implanted part as well as maximizing the transfer efficiency. Using class I amplifier, we achieved above 75% power transfer efficiency at average 40W power transfer level which is required for normal TIAH operation. In vivo performance of the developed system and bio-compatibility of the material used in Implanted parts were evaluated through animal experiments.

  • With the progress of electronics and radio communication technology, human enjoys greater freedom in communication. However, EMW (Electro-Magnetic wave) environments have became complicate and more difficult to control. Thus, international organizations, such as the American National Standard Institution (ANSI), Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the Comite Internationale Special des Perturbations Radio electrique (CISPR), etc, have provided standard for controlling the EM wave environments and for the countermeasure of the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). In this paper, the status of EMW absorber and the goal of smart EMW absorber ifor the future were described. Furthermore, design method of the smart EM wave Absorber with heat radiating function was suggested. The designed smart EM wave Absorber has the absoption ability of more than 5 dB from 2 GHz to 2.45 GHz band, one optimum aperture (hole) size of which was 6 mm, 9 mm in adjacent hole space, and 6.5 mm in thickness, respectivly. Thus, it is repected that these results can be applied to various EMC devices in electronic, communication, and controlling systems.

  • For the purpose of treating health checkups and recovery of patients in a super-aged society, hospitals use devices designed with a reduction circuit of electromagnetic waves associated with the specific absorption rate of electromagnetic waves absorbed by the human body. In this paper, we proposed a filter improvement design method capable of reducing electromagnetic waves. As a result of confirming the validity of the proposed technique through simulation and experimental results, the following result values were obtained. Applying the common-mode (CM) inductor 4 mH to a calibration circuit, noise decreased in a multiband spectrum. Using the differential mode(DM) inductor 40 µH element in the primary calibration circuit, the noise decreased by 15 dB or more in the 3 MHz band spectrum. Also, applying the Admittance Capacitance (Y-Cap) 10 nF element in the secondary calibration circuit resulted in the decrease by more than 30 dB in the band spectrum before 2 MHz. After using a common-mode inductor 4 mH element in the tertiary calibration circuit, it decreased by more than 15 dB in the band spectrum after 2 MHz.

Thus, international organizations, such as the American National Standard Institution(ANSI), Federal Communications Commission(FCC), the Comite Internationale Special des Perturbations Radio Electrique(CISPR), etc, have provided standard for controlling the EM wave environments and for the countermeasure of the electromagnetic compatibility(EMC). In this paper, fabrication of the smart EMW absorber which has heat radiating function and high performance absorption abilities were suggested. Furthermore, we prospected future smart EMW absorbers. The designed smart EMW absorber is fabricated following process. Firstly, we applied high temperature heat treated to a mixture of Iron-oxide($Fe_2O_3$) and ceramics. Secondly, we applied low temperature heat treated to the mixture of heat treated material and a carbon material. Lastly, we made apertures on the absorber. The designed smart EM wave absorber has the absorption ability of more than 20 dB from 2 GHz to 2.45 GHz band, respectively. Thus, it is respected that these results can be applied as various EMC devices in electronic, communication, and controlling systems.
