This paper presents an improved anti-islanding algorithm for utility interconnection of multiple distributed fuel cell powered generations (DFPGs). A cross-correlation method is proposed and implemented in conjunction with the anti-islanding algorithm developed in the previous work [I]. While the power control algorithm continuously perturbs $({\pm}5%)$ the reactive power supplied by the DFPG, the proposed algorithm calculates the cross-correlation index of a rate of change of the frequency deviation with respect to $({\pm}5%)$ the reactive power to confirm islanding. If this index is above 50%, the algorithm further initiates $({\pm}10%)$ the reactive power perturbation and continues to calculate the correlation index. If the index exceeds 80%, the occurrence of islanding can be confirmed. The proposed method is robust and capable of detecting the occurrence of islanding in the presence of several DFPGs, which are independently operating. Viability of the cross-correlation method is verified by the simulation. Experimental results are presented to support the findings of the proposed method.
The conventional non-isolated boost converter has some drawbacks such as poor dynamic performance and a discontinuous output current, which make it unsuitable for battery charging applications. In spite of its compactness and lightness, it is not preferred as a charger of portable electronic devices. In this paper, a non-isolated boost converter topology for Li-ion batteries suitable for fuel cell powered laptop computers is proposed and analyzed. The proposed converter has an additional inductor at the output to make a continuous output current. This feature makes it suitable for charger applications by eliminating the disadvantages of the conventional non-isolated boost converter mentioned above. A prototype of the proposed converter is built for the Li-ion battery charger of a laptop computer to prove the validity and advantages of the proposed topology.

The transient phenomenon of self-powered energy-harvesting is assessed using a bond-graph method. The bond-graph is an energy-based approach to describing physical-dynamic systems. It shows power flow graphically, which helps us understand the behavior of complicated systems in simple terms. Because energy-harvesting involves conversion of power in mechanical form to the electrical one, the bond-graph is a good tool to analyze this power flow. Although the bond-graph method can be used to calculate the dynamics of combining mechanical and electrical systems simultaneously, it has not been used for harvesting analysis. We demonstrate the usability and versatility of bond-graph for not only steady analysis but also transient analysis of harvesting.
In spite of its compactness and lightness, conventioan boost converter is not preferred for the charge applications. In this paper, a non-isolated boost converter topology for the Li-Ion battery suitable for fuel cell powered laptop computer is proposed and analyzed. The proposed converter has an additional inductor at the output to reduce the output ripple current and voltage. This feature makes it suitable for the charger application by eliminating the disadvantages of the conventional non-isolated boost converter mentioned above.
This paper proposes a base models of Hybrid railway vehicle power system. A powered system with fuel cell is regarded as a high current and low voltage source. The design parameters of the system should be chosen by taking into account the characteristics of the fuel cell, so the costs of the power system at given operating conditions can be reduced. Currently, no integrated simulation has been approached to analyze interrelated effects. Therefore, the base models of power conversion system with a PEM fuel cell/IPT system for hybrid powered system that includes the PEM fuel cell stack, DC/DC converter are developed. Concept of bidirectional converter for super capacitor charging system is presented.
We developed a highly efficient organic photovoltaic (OPV) cell with a poly[4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-b;4,5-b']dithiophene-2,6-diyl-alt-(4-(2-ethylhexyl)-3-fluorothieno[3,4-b]thiophene-)-2-carboxylate-2-6-diyl)]:[6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester active layer for harvesting lower-intensity indoor light energy to power various self-powered sensor systems that require power in the microwatt range. In order to achieve higher power conversion efficiency (PCE), we first optimized the thickness of the active layer of the OPV cell through optical simulations. Next, we fabricated an OPV cell with optimized active layer thickness. The device exhibited a PCE of 12.23%, open circuit voltage of 0.66 V, short-circuit current density of 97.7 ㎂/cm2, and fill factor of 60.53%. Furthermore, the device showed a maximum power density of 45 ㎼/cm2, which is suitable for powering a low-power (microwatt range) sensor system.
With recent advanced in portable electric devices, wireless sensor, MEMS and bio-Mechanics device, the new typed power supply, not conventional battery but self-powered energy source is needed. Particularly, the system that harvests from their environments are interests for use in self powered devices. For very low powered devices, environmental energy may be enough to use power source. Therefore, in other to made piezoelectric energy harvesting device. The made 31type triple-morph cantilever was resulted from the conditions of $100k{\Omega}$, 0.25g, 154Hz respectively. The thick film was prepared at the condition of 6.57Vrms, and its power was $432.31{\mu}W$ and its thickness was $50{\mu}m$. And than, the fabricated piezoelectric cantilever was packaged for application.
We propose an electrically self-reliant structural health monitoring (SHM) system that is able to wirelessly transmit sensing data using electrical power generated by vibration without the need for additional external power sources. The provision of reliable electricity to wireless SHM systems is a highly important issue that has often been ignored, and to expand the applicability of various wireless SHM innovations, it will be necessary to develop comprehensive wireless SHM devices including stable electricity sources. In light of this need, we propose a new, highly efficient vibration-powered generator based on a tuned-mass-damper (TMD) mechanism that is quite suitable for vibration-based SHM. The charging time of the TMD generator is shorter than that of conventional generators based on the impedance matching method, and the proposed TMD generator can harvest 16 times the amount of energy that a conventional generator can. The charging time of an SHM wireless transmitter is quantitatively formulated. We conduct wireless monitoring experiments to validate a wireless SHM system composed of a self-reliant SHM and a vibration-powered TMD generator.
Recently, on-line diagnosis methods through wired and wireless networks are widely adopted in the diagnosis of industrial Electric Facilities, such as generators, transformers and motors. Also smart sensors which includes sensors, signal conditioning circuits and micro-controller in one board are widely studied in the field of condition monitoring. This paper suggests an self-powered system suitable for condition-monitoring smart sensors, which uses parasitic vibrations of the facilities as energy source. First, vibration-driven noise patterns of the electric facilities are presented. And then, an electromagnetic generator which uses mechanical mass-spring vibration resonance are suggested and designed. Finally energy consumption of the presented smart sensor, which consists of MEMS vibration sensors, signal conditioning circuits, a low-power consumption micro-controller, and a ZIGBEE wireless tranceiver, are presented. The usefulness and limits of the presented electromagnetic generators in the field of electric facility monitoring are also suggested.
