Design of a Prototype Fibre Optic Based Monitoring and Control System for Future KEPCO's 765kV Substation (765kV 변전소 감시제어용 시범시스템)

  • Instead of point-to-point hard wiring between substation yard equipments and SCADA RTU(Remote Terminal Unit), fibre optic cable will be used in the portion between Local Units and Central Unit in the future KEPCO 765kV substation. The connections between substation yard equipments and nearby Local Unit remain the same hard wiring. The new fibre optic system will provide security especially during ground faults and is immune to electrical noise. A prototype system will be manufactured and installed in the existing 154kV Yeosan Substation by the end of July this year and operated for one year. By incorporating the operation experiences acquired in the system, an improved system will be commercially applied to 765kV Shin-An-Seong Substation where 345kV GIS will be installed initially and act as the switching station in the year 1998. The system is composed of one Central Unit and several Local Units. The Central Unit is composed of two workstation level computers, one is in operation and the other backup, and a Communication Control Unit. The Local Unit uses the existing SCADA RTU technology and takes the form of a distributed one. Between the Communication Control Unit and Local Units, the fibre optic system with star-coupler is used.

Present State Analysis of Customers' Effect in Power Distribution System by Momentary Voltage Variation (배전계통의 순시전압변동에 의한 수용가측 영향의 현황 분석)

  • This paper analyzes the present state of customers' effect in distribution system by momentary voltage variation. Customers are becoming increasingly concerned about the quality of electric power. Most of all, the voltage magnitude quality is very important because it can have a direct effect on customers. Especially, according to the development of automatic process, momentary voltage variations result in the shutdown of sensitive loads such as electronic equipment, computer and magnetic contactor, and so on. To analyze the shutdown rate of customers' equipments by the momentary voltage variation, we present the CVEMA curve and he cumulative CVEA curve of each load type through the experiment for the customers' sensitive equipments. Also, we have surveyed customers' opinion by the questionnaire as "Survey of Power Quality" an then the results are reported.

  • Recently, switchboards for MV/LV distribution customers have been united and digitalized rapidly. This paper proposes the effective information visualization method for the data measured from cubicle switchboards for MV/LV distribution customers. We developed the algorithm that analyzes abundant data measured by switchboards and displays them to overall users, such as fire information index, power condition index, switchboard safety index, and power diminution index. Using a touch screen made users to operate it easily. User interface was also improved by taking graphic visualization. We guess the information visualization method suggested in this paper shows the new direction that heavy electrical equipments including switchboards are going to develop in the future.

  • This paper proposes a portable cable fault detection system with automatic fault distinction and distance measurement using time-frequency correlation and reference signal elimination method and automatic fault classification algorithm in order to have more accurate fault determination and location detection than conventional time domain refelectometry (TDR) system despite increased signal attenuation due to the long distance to cable fault location. The performance of the developed system method was validated via an experiment in the test field constructed for the standardized performance test of power cable fault location equipments. The performance evaluation showed that accuracy of the developed system is less than 1.34%. Also, an error of automatic fault type and location by detection of phase and peak value through elimination of the reference signal and normalization of correlation coefficient and automatic fault classification algorithm not occurred.

  • Earth equipments are essential to protect humans and other types of equipment from abnormal conditions. Earth resistance and potential must be restricted within a low value. An estimation algorithm of earth parameters and equivalent resistivity is introduced to calculate reliable earth resistance in this research. The proposed algorithm is based on the relationship between apparent resistances and earth parameters. The proposed algorithm, which approximates the non-linear characteristics of earth by using the Artificial Neural Network (ANN), estimates the earth parameters and equivalent resistivity. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified with case studies.

  • As the necessity of increasing the midnight base load is extensively increased, electric power companies have to increase the demand of midnight electrical power by lowering the electrical charge rate at midnight. One of the most widely used midnight equipments is the heat Storage type's electrical boiler. A Single chip microprocessor controller for the heat-storage type's electrical boiler is developed. This controller call reduce the undesirable peak load at the begining of midnight (i.e.11 P.M.) time band by using backward load control method. Futhermore, this controller enables reservation of heat storge and the effective heating control the field test has been done by use the boiler for 66$m^2$ with the heater of 21KW quality.

  • In 2007, 9,128 fires are attributed to electrical equipments. These fires resulted in 29 deaths and 262 injuries. Arc-faults were one of the major causes of these fires. When an unintended arc-fault occurs, it generates intense heat that can easily ignite surrounding combustibles. Conventional circuit breakers only respond to overloads, short circuits, and leakage currents. Therefore, the breakers do not protect against arcing conditions. This paper presents results obtained in experiments on ignition behavior of wire by series arc fault currents and techniques developed to detect the arc-faults. The developed technique was tested after installation to make sure they are working properly and protecting the circuit. If the developed arc detecting technique is applied, the electrical fires caused by an arc-fault can be reduced.

Survey on the Residential Standby Power Consumption in Korea (한국의 가정용 대기전력 소모현황 조사연구)

  • Standby power is the electricity consumed in an electrical equipment when it is switched-off or not performing its main function. Due to the acceleration of digital electronics and home networking, standby power use tends to increase rapidly year by year. In this paper, standby power consumption in residential sector in Korea has been surveyed and reported for the first time. Totally 825 pieces of electrical equipments that consume standby power in 53 households were investigated. The average standby power per equipment and total standby power per household were 3.66W and 57.0W, respectively. Annual standby power consumption per household was estimated 306kWh; which means the standby power consumption in residential sector in Korea can be estimated 4.6TWh a year representing 1.67 percent of total electrical consumption (274TWh).

  • The problems of he plentiful harmonics and low power factor have occured to the increase of semiconductor power conversion equipments. These problems should be improved by the active power filters which have been studied recently. This paper described the appliaction of delta modulation technique to current-fed filter and control performance. Through digital simulation the output characteristics of delta modulator are investigated theoretically.
