  • In this paper, the initial behavior of transmission tower was analyzed. This tower was firstly constructed by rock anchor foundation in domestic 154 kV transmission line and wireless real-time monitoring system was installed to obtain the measured data for analysis of the structure behavior. For this purpose, 16 strain gauges was installed in anchors of foundation and strain gauges, clinometers, anemoscope and settlement sensors was installed at superstructure. As the results, the main factor which influence the behavior of superstructure is wind velocity, wind direction, rainfall and temperature change. Especially, the uplift load at stub of transmission structure revealed about 35.4 percentages of design load. Hereafter the long term stability will be analyzed.

  • This paper presents the design factor of an overhead transmission tower structure in order to reduce the tower weight. The behaviour of transmission tower structures are affected by the horizontal angle of the tower structure, the equivalent wind pressure group, the slope of the main post of the tower, the separation of the internode and the use of high-strength materials in their construction. Tower weight can be reduced by approximately 30% reduce weight by means of optimal design based on a consideration of all the above factors. In addition, the design of the foundation of the tower with the shear key installation to increase horizontal support together with a modified angle of inclination to the ground can reduce by about 37% the amount of concrete used during construction. The area of ground disturbed by the construction of the tower foundation can thus be reduced by approximately 33%. Therefore it is possible to build an environmently-friendly T/L tower with the mechanical properties of existing towers.

  • Electric transmission lines pass through a variety of area. Foundation supporting the conductors and tower are selected properly in accordance with external load, for example dead load, wind load, snow load, construction load etc, and topography and geology condition. Typical types of foundation are as follows: pad foundation for small load and hard soil or rock in mountainous area, pile foundation for medium or large load and soft soil in plain field area. This paper introduced cylindrical foundation design & construction for large load and mountainous area. This foundation failure mode against pulling-out show splitting failure by tensile force toward circumferential direction.

  • Safety diagnosis was conducted to evaluate the long-term stability evaluation of power transmission tower of which deformation of the upper structural elements occurred. To assess the cause of the structural deformation, field investigation including BIPS, down-hole test, concrete pile coring and finite element analysis were carried out. From these studies, the major cause of deformation was found due to the heavily fractured layer and weathered soil topography at the pile tip area. The cement-milk grouting method was proposed to reinforce these weak zone around the pile tip area. Also, the increase of cross-section and stiffness for steel members of upper tower structures was suggested. Instrumental monitoring was proposed as well to verify reinforcing effect.

  • With the transmission line the ratio of lightning breakdown the while whole breaking down is occupying a high share with average 72%, is a tendency which increases continuously. In order decreasing the back flashover faults from like this lightning breakdown, it is very important to maintain grounding resistance of tower below target. In this paper, we synthetically analyzed the grounding resistance reduction effect of tower foundation and standard ground connection from construction site, and investigated efficiency for ways to increase the length of counter poise and expand the size of conductivity concrete materials.

  • Ground vibrations caused by pile driving or explosive blasting can affect the stability of power line tower and its foundation. Because the characteristics of ground vibrations generally depend on the distances from the blast, the ground vibrations should be controlled by taking the distance into account. In this study, ground vibration levels were measured at the foundation of a power line tower and on ground surface adjacent to the tower. The relationships between the dominant frequencies of the ground vibrations that were measured at both locations were comparatively investigated.

  • Generally the capacities of electric power transmission tower's members are improved by increasing their stiffness nature through injection of grout or attachment of other structural stiffeners. Those are for upgrading their axial strength by fulfillment of proper materials into pipe members, increment of member dimension by addition of section, or a combination of the two. However the use of innovative and unusual procedures would be positively recommended for getting more stable state. It is that buckled members are replaced with lengthened and strengthened members. In providing the structural restoration procedures for the existing electric power transform tower whose main members have been damaged due to unequal foundation settlement, structural damage inspection works and numerical analyses for the damaged one and the restored one were done in detail at first. secondarily member-exchanging works using a newly-generated jacking system and strengthened members were achieved. This figures are to point clearly to inherent advantages attending the management of the towers.

  • The sharing of common corridors by electric power transmission lines and pipelines is becoming more common place. However, such corridor sharing can result in undesired coupling of electromagnetic energy from the power lines to the near facilities. During a fault on any of the transmission lines, energization of the earth by supporting structures near the fault can result in large voltages appearing locally between the earth and the steel wall of any nearby pipeline. This paper presents the outline of the tower footings for the transmission lines having been used in KEPCO and analyzes the earth resistance for operation method of the tower footing, that is contact presence for the anchor and reinforcing rob of the tower and foundation presence of the underground wiring.

  • In electric power transmission tower structures on offshore, implementation of life management using the event data of regular safety inspections for structural and material damages is strongly recommended. In this study, six tower structures in Sihwa Lake around Yeoungheung island were target bodies for the safety inspections. safety inspections for deterioration about each of six towers were performed about three items for steel member, five items for concrete foundation, and four items for steel-pipe pile in seawater and seawater itself. Safety inspections for steel members included the visual observations of surface appearances, the measurements of member thicknesses, and the checks of painting states. Also safety inspections for concrete foundations comprised the estimation of crack features, the evaluation of non-destructive compression strengths, and the measurements of neutralization depths and chlorides contents. For steel-pipe piles in seawater the inspections comprised the surveys of corrosion states in accordance with potential levels tests and anode tests, the analyses of photos taken on surfaces of the piles as well as the evaluation of seawater quality. A set of deterioration inspections was performed at the same positions around october of each year for three consecutive years. As a result in this study, Newly developed deterioration indexes have been applied profitably to maintain structural safety for electric power transmission towers by utilizing these event data systematically.
