  • A study on the characteristics of electric shock in fresh water due to the leakage of submerged electric facility is conducted by using a reduced scale model at a scale of 1:10 in laboratory. Electric potential as a function of distance from leakage source, type of the leakage source, magnitude of the source voltage, submerged depth and diameter of a copper rod electrode is measured. On the basis of safety standard, separation for guarantee of safety is determined by the measured potential. Also supposing that body resistance is 500[$\Omega$], the human reaction was estimated by calculating body current for some shock duration. Thus, in this paper, the hazard of the electric shock is assessed by introducing representative safety factors, body voltage and body current due to leakage source.

  • This paper presents a graphical method for hazard assessment of electric shock by safety criteria. For the human body to be safety actual body current should not exceed safety criteria, i.e. allowable body current. The assessment method presented in this paper is based m the safety criteria of the IEEE Standard 80 as well as the IEC 479-1. The hazard can be assessed in terms of alterable touch voltages instead of alterable body current. Thus, the hazard assessment of given electric shock condition is referred to a procedure by which the actual touch voltages are compared with the allowable (safe) touch voltages. Since the IEC 479-1 safety criteria are nonlinear, the graphical method is presented for the hazard assessment. Body current and body voltage are calculated with the allowable touch voltage. A comparison of the safety criteria of two widely accepted standards, i.e. the IEEE Std 80 End the IEC 479-1 is proposed. Also Thevenin equivalent resistance is obtained from electric shock model expressed by two-port earth-grid-foot system. On the basis of calculated results, the allowable touch voltage, the body current and the body voltage we can conduct the hazard or safety assessment and estimate the severity of electric shock.

  • Recently, DC distribution systems have become a hot issue because of the increase in digital loads and DC generation systems according to the expansion of renewable energy technologies. To obtain the practical usage of DC electricity, safety should be guaranteed. The main concerns for safety are twofold: one side is human protection against electric shocks, and the other is facility protection from short faults. "Effects of current on human beings and livestock" (IEC 60479) defines a human body impedance model in electric shock conditions that consists of resistive components and capacitive components. Although the human body impedance model properly works in AC electricity, it does not well match with the electric shock behavior in DC electricity. In this study, the contradiction of the human body impedance model defined by IEC 60479 in case of DC electricity is shown through experiments for the human body. From the analysis of experimental results, a novel unified human body impedance model in electric shock conditions is proposed. This model consists of resistive components, capacitive components, and an inductance component. The proposed human impedance model matches well for AC and DC electricity environments in simulation and experiment.

  • The paper considers the electrical shock risk of the human body due to underwater leakage current in electric field. The characteristics of electric shock in fresh water due to the leakage of submerged electric facility in the bathtub in public baths were conducted. The exposed live electrode is modeled as a point source of electric current source. It is assumed that divergent monopole field exists in the vicinity of the current source, regardless of the presence of return electrode and insulating boundary. The electric potentials in the steel bathtub, Diesen and Mole and Flux3D program one are measured according to the distance from leakage source. The results show that the increased shock risk and safe distance are estimated by the bathtub of limited width and the voltage calculated on the basis of a divergent monopole field concept is compared with the measured value.

  • This paper considers the electrical shock risk of the human body due to underwater leakage current in such places of public baths. Many submerged electric facilities in a public bath may create a severe electric shock hazard for the human body, since wet body in an accidentally energized bathtub can result in low electrical resistance through the human body for leakage or fault currents. Therefore a major consideration, in the context of electrical safety underwater, is the shock risk to the bather as a result of electric current flowing through the water in bathtub. To assess the electric shock risk and to analyze the potential distribution in a bathtub, 2 different situation cases are set up, then experimental and simulation methods are adopted. The validity of 2 cases of simulation and experiment data in a bathtub for electric distribution underwater are compared and analyzed. Also electric shock risk assessment underwater in a real public bathtub by simulation program package, Flux 3D, was conducted herein, and the results are presented and discussed.

  • In this modern age which electric energy is the fundamental source of energy in the industry, electric shock disasters are unavoidable. Although numerous efforts, time, and money have been invested to prevent such electric shock disasters, the number of electric shock disasters are on the increase. In this study, models for equivalent electric circuit are developed for the different types of electric shock which are classified into three groups. The objective of these models is to calculate the electric current flowing through the body at the time of the shock. Based on the analysis, countermeasures to prevent the shock are suggested. The data used in this study are based on 28 actual incidents which occurred in the Daegu area during January of 1995 through June of 1999. The results of this study can be used as a technical manual for workers treating electrical facilities.

  • This paper presents protection techniques against electric shock in low voltage DC(direct current) grounding systems depending on the analysis of earth fault current paths. Firstly, the comparison between alternating current and direct current on human was conducted, and current threshold values for each current path and for long duration were analyzed. Secondly, the analyses of the earth fault current flows were performed depending on the grounding types and earth fault conditions. Lastly, based on these analyses, adequate protection measures of electric shock depending on low voltage DC grounding types were provided.

  • To eradicate several viruses such as PVX, PVY, and PLRV which often cause considerable damages to the growth and yields of potatoes, several stems including shoot tips were excised from the potato plants grown for 50 days and electric shock was treated. Shoot tips excised from electric-shocked stems were transferred into the medium supplemented with antiviral compound, ribavirin to examine the combinatorial effect. When treated only with 20 mg/L ribavirin, PVX concentration in the regenerated plant-lets was slowly decreased as repeating sub-culture and finally, it took 32 weeks to reach completely PVX-free stock. With an electric shock treatment (10 mA electric current), all the replicates became free from PVY. However, PLRV was not completely eradicated from 94P70-4 and 93P29-3 lines even by treating with 10 mA electric shock. In this case, both electric shock and antiviral compound treatments in axillary buds from the stem segment were successful in eradicating viral contamination.

  • To analyze the effectiveness of the resistive leakage current monitoring as a technology preventing electrical accidents, in this paper, we have estimated the phase of the body impedance by using the body impedance model and the body impedance data from IEC. We also have analyzed the phase of the electric body current in the case of 60Hz/220V. From these results, we concluded that deliberate researches about the phase of the electrical body current and related regulations must be carried out before the resistive leakage current monitoring unit is used to protect electric shock. And we concluded that the resistive leakage current monitoring unit can be utilized to prevent electrical fires caused by electric leakage current without unwanted circuit break due to capacitive leakage current flowing from line filter capacitors to the earth.
