This paper presents a novel fault location scheme on Korean AC electric railway systems. On AC railway system, because there is a long distance, 40 km or longer, between two railway substations, a fault location technique is very important. Since the fault current flows through the catenary system, the catenary system must be modeled exactly to analyze fault current magnitude and fault location. In this paper, before suggestion for the novel scheme of fault location, a 9-conductor modeling technique that includes boost wires and impedance bonds is introduced, based on the characteristics of Korean AC electric railway. After obtaining a 9-conductor modeling, the railway system is constructed for computer simulation by using PSCAD/EMTDC. By case studies, we can verify superiority of a new fault location scheme and suggest a powerful model for fault analysis on electric railway systems.

Recently, as the feasibility study shows that trans-Korea railway and trans-continental railway are advantageous, interest in high-speed railway system is increasing. Because railway vehicle is environment-friendly and safe compared with airplane and ship, its market-sharing increases gradually. KHST(Korean High Speed Train) has been developed by KRRI (Korea Railroad Research Institute) for last 6 years to satisfy the need. An electric railway system is composed of high-tech subsystems, among which main electric equipment such as transformers and converter are critical components determining the performance of rolling stock. We developed a measurement system for on-line test and evaluation of performances of KHST. The measurement system is composed of software part and hardware part. Perfect interface between multi-users is possible. A now method to measure temperature was applied to the measurement system. By using the system, fault diagnosis and performance evaluation of electric equipment in Korean High Speed Train was conducted during test running.
This paper examined an applicability of optimum algorithm to develope an electric railway pole foundation automated design system. Based on the optimization theory that considered subgrade and bearing capacity characteristics, decided an optimum section of electric railway pole foundation. In this research, Optimum algorithm used the feasible direction method in structural analysis and design efficiently. Design variables are considered geometric properties and anchor bolt area of the electric railway pole foundation as optimum construction cost. Constraints are considered settlement., overturning and activity of foundation. And, also composed flexural and shearing strength. According to optimum analysis result., optimization theory is available more economical design comparing with railway pole foundation that is constructed by current standard drawing, and applicability verified in automated design system development.
This paper proposes a reduction method for the mis-operation analysis of the DC High Speed Circuit Breaker(HSCB) in electric railway substation system. The analysis method is based on present condition of operation which is a method for accuracy level up. There is reason to operation of HSCB that it is mis-operation of fault detection relay(50F), operation of ground fault relay(64P), and trouble of electric car. A countermeasure is relay resetting through field test, induction of GTOCB(Gate Turn Off Thyristor Circuit Breaker), HSVCB(High Speed Vacuum Circuit Breaker), coordination with electric car. The results presented in the paper can be used as a reference for maintenance free in electric railway substation system.

A RCM approach to maintenance of the catenary system of electric railway is proposed. The proposed RCM approach provides a maintenance-oriented FMECA procedure to derive critical failure modes by analyzing failure effects and a RCM decision logic tree to suggest optimal maintenance works for the derived failure modes. By applying the proposed RCM procedures to the catenary system of high speed railway, it is suggested that strand breaks of dropper and voltage equalizing wire, and trolly wire wear-out are the critical failure modes for whom maintenance works based on condition monitoring should be applied instead of conventional time-based preventive maintenance. It is also proposed by reliability analysis that replacement time of dropper can be reduced from 18 years to 10 years. These results show that the proposed RCM approach can optimize the maintenance procedures of catenary system.
In this paper, we proposed a DC electric railway system that composed of a 3-phase voltage source converter (VSC) and a bidirectional DC-DC converter. The proposed electric railway system is modeled and simulated to show the feasibility in MATLAB/Simulink.
This paper presents the modeling of grounding system on Korean electric railway system. The system model is composed of the catenary system, the grounding-system, the sub-sectioning post, the fault point, the sectioning post, the autotransformer in the substation, and the electric vehicle. The increment of rail-ground voltage may be thought as an amplifier of danger on human body of equipment insulation. The rail-ground voltage on steady state and on fault condition should be under standard limit voltage. To analyze grounding system for steady state and fault condition on Korean railway, modeling for each railway system is performed by 10-port network model. Modeling and analysis of present grounding-system are important to protect human and electronic equipments. The examinations for systematic grounding-system are investigated.

Power supply system of electric railway has a diversity of safety problems since it should supply high electric power to the trains moving high speed with a lot of passengers on board. This paper provides a risk assessment approach to safety management of the electric railway facilities. Construction of database from field accident information, risk assessment and management of the risk are carried out systematically to ensure the safety. The risk assessment includes hazard identification, cause analysis by FTA(Fault Tree Analysis), consequence analysis by EVA(Event Tree Analysis), and loss analysis. In terms of the severity and the probability of the accidents deduced by these analyses, the risk of the accidents is assessed by using a risk matrix designed for electric railway facilities. Based on the risk assessment, possible risk mitigation options are identified and evaluated by analyzing their impact on the risk reduction and their cost benefit ratio. The long-term safety of the electric railway facilities can be ensured by renewal of the risk assessment and the risk mitigation option analysis with continuous accident database update. The proposed approach is applied to the electric railway facilities of Korean railway based on the accident data from 2002 to 2008.
The substation automation is a system to remote-monitor and control electric power flow. And in line with electrification of railway, an interest in electric railway substation automation is increasing. IEC standardized IEC 61850, IEC 61968 and IEC 61970 communication protocol for the telecommunication standardization of the electric power automation industry. The recent SCADA systems in managed electric railway substations are have the problem about the compatibility with the products which fit to the international standard specification afterward. In this paper, the model of electric railway substation automation based on IEC 61850 and IEC 61970 is presented. And the method supporting the compatibility between the equipment is proposed.
Owing to the consistent increase in accurate analysis issue for energy consumption of the AC electric railway systems, there is controversy about the adequacy of the present watt-hour metering configuration. Due to the unusual load characteristics and facilities, the discussions have not been active. Therefore, in order to achieve more accurate watt-hour metering for AC electric railway system, this paper proposes numerical formulas for watt-hour metering that reflects the highly-varying characteristics of the railway load and the structural characteristics of the Scott transformer. The proposed formulas have been verified by comparison with site-measured data, and a more suitable metering configuration for AC railway system has been proposed.
