  • The Application of Artificial Neural Network(ANN) to forecast a load in a power system is investigated. The load forecasting is important in the electric utility industry. This technique, methodology based on the fact that parallel structure can process very fast much information is a promising approach to a load forecasting. ANN that is highly interconnected processing element in a hierachy activated by the each input. The load pattern can be divided distinctively into two patterns, that is, weekday and weekend. ANN is composed of a input layer, several hidden layers, and a output layer and the past data is used to activate input layer. The output of ANN is the load forecast for a given day. The result of this simulation can be used as a reference to a electric utility operation.

  • In smart grid an accurate load forecasting is crucial in planning resources, which aids in improving its operation efficiency and reducing the dynamic uncertainties of energy systems. Research in this area has included the use of shallow neural networks and other machine learning techniques to solve this problem. Recent researches in the field of computer vision and speech recognition, have shown great promise for Deep Neural Networks (DNN). To improve the performance of daily electric peak load forecasting the paper presents a new deep neural network model which has the architecture of two multi-layer neural networks being serially connected. The proposed network model is progressively pre-learned layer by layer ahead of learning the whole network. For both one day and two day ahead peak load forecasting the proposed models are trained and tested using four years of hourly load data obtained from the Korea Power Exchange (KPX).

  • This paper presents the methods of short-term load forecasting Kohonen neural networks and back-propagation neural networks. First, historical load data is divided into 5 patterns for the each seasonal data using Kohonen neural networks and using these results, load forecasting neural network is used for next day hourly load forecasting. Next day hourly load of weekdays and weekend except holidays are forecasted. For load forecasting in summer, max-temperature and min-temperature data as well as historical hourly load date are used as inputs of load forecasting neural networks for a better forecasting accuracy. To show the possibility of the proposed method, it was tested with hourly load data of Korea Electric Power Corporation(1994-95).

  • Load forecasting is needed to make supply and demand plan for a stable supply of electricity. It is also necessary for optimal operational plan of the power system planning. In particular, in order to ensure stable power supply, long-term load forecasting is important. And regional load forecasting is important for tightening supply stability. Regional load forecasting is known to be an essential process for the optimal state composition and maintenance of the electric power system network including transmission lines and substations to meet the load required for the area. Therefore, in this paper we propose a forecasting method using SARIMA during the 12 months (long-term/mid-term) load forecasting by 16 regions of the South Korea.

  • In order to manage the demand resources of project participants and to provide appropriate strategies in the virtual power plant's power trading platform for consumers or operators who want to participate in the distributed resource collective trading market, it is very important to forecast the next day's demand of individual participants and the overall system's electricity demand. This paper developed a power demand forecasting model for the next day. For the model, we used LSTM algorithm of deep learning technique in consideration of time series characteristics of power demand forecasting data, and new scheme is applied by applying one-hot encoding method to input/output values such as power demand. In the performance evaluation for comparing the general DNN with our LSTM forecasting model, both model showed 4.50 and 1.89 of root mean square error, respectively, and our LSTM model showed high prediction accuracy.

  • In this paper, we propose a quadratic (nonlinear) regression model that forecasts daily demands of electric power in summer. For cost-effective production (and/or procurement) of electric power, forecasting demands of electric power with accuracy is important, especially in summer when temperature is high. In the literature, temperature and daily demands of preceding days are typically employed to construct forecasting models. While, we consider another factor, day of the week, together with temperature and daily demands of preceding days. For validating the proposed model, we demonstrate the forecasting accuracy in terms of MAPE(Mean Absolute Percentage Error) and MPE(Maximum Percentage Error) using field data from KEPCO(Korea Electric Power Corporation) in comparison with two forecasting models in the literature. When compared with the two benchmarks, the proposed forecasting model performs far better providing MAPE and MPE not exceeding 3.08% and 8.99%, respectively, in summer from 2005 to 2009.

  • This paper describes the Weekly Load Forecasting Expert System(Named WLoFy) which was developed and implemented for Korea Electric Power Corporation(KEPCO). WLoFy was designed to provide user oriented features with a graphical user interface to improve the user interaction. The various forecasting models such as exponential smoothing, multiple regression, artificial nerual networks, rult-based model, and relative coefficient model also have been included in WLofy to increase the forecasting accuracy. The simulation based on historical data shows that the weekly forecasting results form WLoFy is an improvement when compared to the results from the conventional methods. Especially the forecasting accuracy on special days has been improved remakably.

  • The electric power load during the peak time in summer is strongly affected by cooling load. which decreases the preparation ratio of electricity and brings about the failure in the supply of electricity in the electric power system. The ice-storage system and heat pump system etc are used to settle this problem. In this study, the method of estimating temperature and humidity to forecast the cooling load of ice-storage system is suggested. And also the method of forecasting the cooling load using neural network is suggested. For the simulation, the cooling load is calculated using actual temperature and humidity. The forecast of the temperature, humidity and cooling load are simulated. As a result of the simulation, the forecasted data approached to the actual data.

  • In the smart grid, it will be possible to communicate with the consumers for the purposes of monitoring and controlling their power consumption without disturbing their business or comfort. This will bring easier administration capabilities for the utilities. On the other hand, consumers will require more advanced home automation tools which can be implemented by using advanced sensor technologies. For instance, consumers may need to adapt their consumption according to the dynamically varying electricity prices which necessitates home automation tools. This paper tries to combine neural network and nonlinear autoregressive with exogenous variable (NARX) class for next week electric load forecasting. The suitability of the proposed approach is illustrated through an application to electric load consumption data. The suggested system provides a useful and suitable tool especially for the load forecasting.
