  • Attention has been focused on how to charge an electric vehicle in accordance with the increase of interest in the electric vehicle in recent years. The charging of an electric vehicle with a solar power is way to increase the stability of the grid and to supplement the grid power demand. In this paper, the EMTP / ATPDraw presents a method of charging an electric vehicle in connection to the grid and the solar power system, and analyze the trends in supply power from the solar power system according to changes in temperature and irradiation.

Analysis for Evaluating the Impact of PEVs on New-Town Distribution System in Korea

  • This paper analyzes the impact of Plug-in Electric vehicles(PEVs) on power demand and voltage change when PEVs are connected to the domestic distribution system. Specifically, it assesses PEVs charging load by charging method in accordance with PEVs penetration scenarios, its percentage of total load, and voltage range under load conditions. Concretely, we develop EMTDC modelling to perform a voltage distribution analysis when the PEVs charging system by their charging scenario was connected to the distribution system under the load condition. Furthermore we present evaluation algorithm to determine whether it is possible to adjust it such that it is in the allowed range by applying ULTC when the voltage change rate by PEVs charging scenario exceed its allowed range. Also, detailed analysis of the impact of PEVs on power distribution system was carried out by calculating existing electric power load and additional PEVs charge load by each scenario on new-town in Korea to estimate total load increases, and also by interpreting the subsequent voltage range for system circuits and demonstrating conditions for countermeasures. It was concluded that total loads including PEVs charging load on new-town distribution system in Korea by PEVs penetration scenario increase significantly, and the voltage range when considering ULTC, is allowable in terms of voltage tolerance range up to a PEVs penetration of 20% by scenario. Finally, we propose the charging capacity of PEVs that can delay the reinforcement of power distribution system while satisfying the permitted voltage change rate conditions when PEVs charging load is connected to the power distribution system by their charging penetration scenario.

A Priority Index Method for Efficient Charging of PEVs in a Charging Station with Constrained Power Consumption

  • The sizable electrical load of plug-in electric vehicles may cause a severe low-voltage problem in a distribution network. The voltage drop in a distribution network can be mitigated by limiting the power consumption of a charging station. Then, the charging station operator needs a method for appropriately distributing the restricted power to all plug-in electric vehicles. The existing approaches have practical limitation in terms of the availability of future information and the execution time. Therefore, this study suggests a heuristic method based on priority indexes for fairly distributing the constrained power to all plug-in electric vehicles. In the proposed method, PEVs are ranked using the priority index, which is determined in real time, such that a near-optimal solution can be obtained within a short computation time. Simulations demonstrate that the proposed method is effective in implementation, although its performance is slightly worse than that of the optimal case.

Effect of Fast Charging Mode on the Degradation of Lithium-Ion Battery: Constant Current vs. Constant Power (정전류/정출력 고속충전 방식에 따른 리튬이온전지의 열화 비교 연구)

  • Electric vehicles (EVs) using lithium secondary batteries (LIBs) with excellent power and long-term cycle performance are gaining interest as the successors of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. However, there are few systematic researches for fast charging to satisfy customers' needs. In this study, we compare the degradation of LIB where its composition is LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3/Graphite with the constant current and constant power-charging method. The charging speed was set to 1C, 2C, 3C and 4C in the constant current mode and the value of constant power was calculated based on the energy at each charging speed. Therefore, by analyzing the battery degradation based on the same charging energy but different charging method; CP charging method can slow down the battery degradation at a high rate of 3C through the voltage curve, capacity retention and DC-IR. However, when the charging rate was increased by 4C or more, the deviation between the LIBs dominated the degradation than the charging method.

A DQN-based Two-Stage Scheduling Method for Real-Time Large-Scale EVs Charging Service

  • With the rapid development of electric vehicles (EVs) industry, EV charging service becomes more and more important. Especially, in the case of suddenly drop of air temperature or open holidays that large-scale EVs seeking for charging devices (CDs) in a short time. In such scenario, inefficient EV charging scheduling algorithm might lead to a bad service quality, for example, long queueing times for EVs and unreasonable idling time for charging devices. To deal with this issue, this paper propose a Deep-Q-Network (DQN) based two-stage scheduling method for the large-scale EVs charging service. Fine-grained states with two delicate neural networks are proposed to optimize the sequencing of EVs and charging station (CS) arrangement. Two efficient algorithms are presented to obtain the optimal EVs charging scheduling scheme for large-scale EVs charging demand. Three case studies show the superiority of our proposal, in terms of a high service quality (minimized average queuing time of EVs and maximized charging performance at both EV and CS sides) and achieve greater scheduling efficiency.   • In this paper, a battery charging system for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) and Electric Vehicle (EV), and operation algorithm of charging system are introduced. Also, the proposed charging system uses commercial electricity in order to charge the battery of parked PHEV and 48V battery charging system with power factor controllable single phase converter for PHEV is investigated in this paper. This research verifies the power factor control of input and the converter output controlled by the charge control algorithm through simulation and experiment.

  • A hybrid charging method with serial and parallel architecture has been developed to resolve the unbalanced charge problem among battery cells for Electric Vehicles. In this method, the major charging is performed with serial part and the balancing is carried out with the parallel part, where the serial part is big and heavy but the parallel part is smaller and lighter than serial part. A sensor array to detect the individual battery cell voltage, duty rate control incorporated IGBTs, and battery management system are employed as the core parts of the proposed system.

  • This paper proposes the process for evaluating the impact of charging the PHEV(Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle) on the distribution systems, and analyzes the study results employing the actual systems as the PHEV is highly expected to increase in the automobile industries in North America in the near future. Since the charging load of the PHEV directly connected to the distribution systems would consume electric power much more than any other existing electric product of residential customers, the new modeling and process would be required to consider the PHEV in distribution systems planning. The EPRI(Electric Power Research Institute) is collaboratively conducting the impact study of PHEV on the distribution systems with power utilities in North America. This study models distribution systems and the charging load of the PHEV using OpenDSS software, and analyzes the impact of PHEV on the distribution systems by assuming various scenarios with different charging time and PHEV types.

  • Recently, a policy has been enforced to supply Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEVs) but this may require reinforcement of the power system depending on its clustering because PEVs are charged directly from power systems. On the other hand, as the reinforcement of power system is limited by time and budget, it is important to supply the charging demand of PEVs efficiently using the existing power systems to increase the diffusion of PEVs. This paper establishes a charging schedule for Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEVs) considering the power system constraints. For this, the required amount and time of the charging demand for an individual PEV was modeled to integrate into power systems based on the driving pattern and charging tariff of PEV. Furthermore, the charging schedule of PEVs was established to meet the power system constraints by calculating the operating conditions of the power systems with PEVs.

  • This study proposes an electric vehicle (EV) smart panel board and its control method on the basis of charging scheduling. The proposed system consists of batteries, a three-phase battery charger, three single-phase inverters, transfer switches for electric power distribution, and a controller. The three-phase battery charger usually charges the batteries at midnight when electric rates are cheap and in light load. When the electric power consumption of the EV standard chargers connected to one phase of the power line is relatively large or when a blackout occurs, the electric power stored in the battery is supplied by discharging through the inverters to the EV standard chargers. As a result, the value of peak load and the charging electric power quantity supplied from a utility grid are reduced, and the current unbalance is improved. The usefulness of the proposed system is confirmed through simulations, experiments, and case studies.
