  • Voltage and frequency stability issues occur in existing centralized power system due to the high penetration of renewable energy sources, which decrease grid absorptive capacity of them. The grid-connected inverter that mimics synchronous generator characteristics with inertia characteristic is beneficial to electric power system stability. This paper proposed a novel three-phase four-wire grid-connected inverter with an independent neutral line module that mimics synchronous generators. A mathematical model of the synchronous generator and operation principles of the synchronverter are introduced. The main circuit and control parameters design procedures are also provided in detail. A 10 kW prototype is built and tested for further verification. The primary frequency modulation and primary voltage regulation characteristics of the synchronous generator are emulated and automatically adjusted by the proposed circuit, which helps to supports the grid.

  • The content of harmonic current increases with an increase in the number of power electronic devices in power grid. When a generator is directly connected to the power grid through a step-up transformer, the influence of the harmonic currents on the generator is inevitable. To study the influences of harmonics on generators, a 24-MW bulb tubular turbine generator is taken as an example in this paper. A 2-D transient electromagnetic field model is established. Through a comparative analysis of the data of experiments and simulations, the correctness of the model is verified. The values of the air gap magnetic density, torque and losses of the generator under various conditions are calculated using the finite element method. Taking the rated condition as a reference, the influence of the harmonic currents on the magnetic flux density is analyzed. It is confirmed that the time harmonic is a key factor affecting the generator performance. At the same time, the effects of harmonic currents on the torque ripple, average torque and eddy current loss of the generator are studied, and the mechanism of the variation of the eddy current loss is also discussed.

  • As modem industrialized society progresses, the demand for electric power is increasing rapidly. The electric power system is getting amazingly bigger and complicated, which can easily induce serious troubles from the potential of large fault problems and/or system failure. The monitoring and diagnosis of the electric machine for the fault detection and protection has been important part in the electric power system. Most faults in the generator appear in the winding. This paper presents the air-gap magnetic flux characteristic of a small-scale 2-pole synchronous generator according to the faults in the field winding to protect the generator from the fault. The magnetic flux patterns in air-gap of a generator under various fault conditions as well as a normal state are simulated by using finite element method. These results are successfully applied to the detection and diagnosis of the short-circuit condition in rotor windings of a high capacitor generator.

  • This research shows the test performance of a 6 kW-scale hybrid electric power system for the high endurance drone. The power system is composed of a two-stroke reciprocal engine, starter-generator and battery, and they are integrated as one power unit. The engine is designed to provide the house for holding the starter-generator at the end of a crankshaft in turn the engine and starter-generator can maintain the same speed during the operational period. In this way, the generated power is readily controlled by just manipulating an engine throttle movement. Moreover, the starter-generator can initiate an engine operation with an aid of battery power until the combustion process becomes stabilized. In consequence, integration mechanism between an engine and generator is simplified, which results in weight reduction achieved. The duty of back-up battery is to provide a starting power to generator via a system controller in addition to covering momentarily power shortage. Therefore, the electric power system is vindicated to provide 6 kW power through a ground test.

  • As the competition in the manufacturing market for small and medium sized generators is intensifying, there is increasing pressure to reduce production cost. Manufacturing the generator stator windings with global vacuum pressure impregnation (GVPI) is a very effective way to reduce costs. However, the stator winding has a fatal disadvantage in that the insulation wears due to vibration in the slot. KEPRI (KEPCO Research Institute) conducted insulation diagnosis for three generators in KOMIPO (Korea Midland Power Co., Ltd.) which were manufactured by GVPI and operated for about 17 years. Insulation diagnosis showed that deterioration of insulation has progressed significantly. Therefore, KEPRI recommended replacing the stator windings of all three generators. In this paper, the insulation properties of the generator stator winding with global GVPI are described by comparing and analyzing the insulation diagnosis results and visual inspection for stator windings.

  • Supply Capability of the generator, if the maximum demand occurs, refers to the maximum power that can be stably supplied and it is possible to maintain stable power supply to be greater than actual load. However, unexpected power demand and reduction in supply Capability due to stop of unexpected generator in operation can temporarily make a big chaos in power system. In fact, due to a lack of power supply Capability in the country, enforced emergency load adjustment to the September 15, 2011, the circulation power outage has occurred in several cities. As the result, interrupted operation of the elevator and stopped hospital medical equipment led to a great deal of trouble to people's lives, causing a social problem. At that time, it was found that a failed frequency control because of smaller actual supply Capability than that of predicted. The difference was about 1,170 MW with Gas turbine power plant. By accurately calculating the generator supply capability, we can not only grasp the power reserve rate, but also correspond to the time of power supply instability.

  • This paper focuses on development of load test simulator of a steam turbine-generator in a nuclear power plant. When load is taken off from electrical power network, it is very difficult to effectively control the steam flow to turbine of the nuclear turbine-generator, because of disturbances, such as electrical load and network unbalance on electrical network. Up to the present time, the conventional control system has been used for the load control on nuclear steam generator, owing to the easy control algorithms and the advantage which have been proven on the nuclear power plant. However, since there are problems with stability control during low power and start-up, only a highly experienced operator can operate during those procedures. Also, a great deal of time and an expensive simulator is needed for the training of an operator. The KEPRI is developed simulator for 600MW nuclear power plant to take a test of generator load rejection, throttle valve, and turbine load control. Total load test is implemented before start up.

  • It is recommended to clean steam generators of nuclear power plants during plant outages. Under normal operations, sludge is created and constantly accumulates in the steam generators. The constituents of this sludge are different depending on each power plant characteristics. The sludge of the Kori Unit 1 steam generator, far example, was found to be composed of 93% ferrous oxide, 3% carbon and 1% of silica oxide and nickel oxide each. The research to develop a lancing system that would remove sludge deposits from the tubesheet of a steam generator was started in 1998 by the Korea Electric Power Research Institute (KEPRI) of the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO). The first commercial domestic lancing system in Korea, the $KALANS^(R)-I$ Lancing System, was completed in 2000 for Kori Unit 1 for cleaning the tubesheet of its Westinghouse Delta-60 steam generator. Thereafter, the success of the development and site implementation of the $KALANS^(R)-I$ lancing system for YGN Units 1&2 and Ulchin Units 3&4 was also realized in 2004 for sludge removal at those sites. The upper bundle cleaning system for Westinghouse model F steam generators is now under development.

  • The purpose of this research was to develop a resonance electric power generator to harvest vibration energy while the vehicle is driving on a road surface. The electric power generator in the paper was designed using the resonance phenomenon to effectively respond to vibrations from the road surface, which is a comparatively small energy source. Vibration displacement analysis using MATLAB and transient analysis using Ansys MAXWELL, which is a commercial electromagnetic analysis program, was performed to predict the input velocity for the generator and verify the electric power generation. If this electric power generator is applicable to hybrid or electric vehicles, it can be valuable around an automotive electric system and help maintain the performance of the vehicle battery.
