Tumor-treating fields therapy involves placing pads onto the patient's skin to create a low- intensity (1 - 3 V/cm), intermediate frequency (100 - 300 kHz), alternating electric field to treat cancerous tumors. This new treatment modality has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration in the USA to treat patients with both newly diagnosed and recurrent glioblastoma. To deliver the prescribed electric field intensity to the tumor while minimizing exposure of organs at risk, we developed an optimization method for the electric field distribution in the body and compared the electric field distribution in the body before and after application of this optimization algorithm. To determine the electric field distribution in the body before optimization, we applied the same electric potential to all pairs of electric pads located on opposite sides of models. We subsequently adjusted the intensity of the electric field to each pair of pads to optimize the electric field distribution in the body, resulting in the prescribed electric field intensity to the tumor while minimizing electric fields at organs at risk. A comparison of the electric field distribution within the body before and after optimization showed that application of the optimization algorithm delivered a therapeutically effective electric field to the tumor while minimizing the average and the maximum field strength applied to organs at risk. Use of this optimization algorithm when planning tumor-treating fields therapy should maintain or increase the intensity of the electric field applied to the tumor while minimizing the intensity of the electric field applied to organs at risk. This would enhance the effectiveness of tumor-treating fields therapy while reducing dangerous side effects.

This paper attempts to develop an algorithm which optimizes the electric field through the so-called NURB(Non-Uniform Rational B-spline) curve in order to improve the insulation capacity. In particular, the NURB curve is a kind of interpolation curve that can be expressed by a few variables. The electric field of a conductor is computed by Charge Simulation Method(CSM) while that of a spacer by Surface Charge Method(SCM); this mixed calculation method is adopted for the electric field optimization. For calculation of the initial and optimal shapes, the Gauss-Newton method, which is quite easy to formulate and has slightly faster convergence rate than other optimization techniques, was used. The tangential electric field, the total electric field, and the product of the tangential electric field and area (Area Effect) were chosen as the optimization objective function by the average value of electric field for the determined initial shape.
Dose optimization for Radioactive Occupational Personal (ROP) is an important subject in nuclear and radiation safety field. The geometric environment of a nuclear facility is complex and the work area is radioactive, so traditional navigation model and radioactive data field cannot form an effective environment model for dose assessment and dose optimization. The environment model directly affects dose assessment and indirectly affects dose optimization, this is an urgent problem needed to be solved. Therefore, this paper focuses on an environment model used for Dose Assessment and Dose Optimization (DA&DO). We designed a multi-layer radiation field coupling modeling method, and then explored the influence of the environment model to DA&DO by virtual simulation. Then, a simulation test is done, the multi-layer radiation field coupling model for nuclear facilities is demonstrated to be effective for dose assessment and dose optimization through the experiments and analysis.

A genetic algorithm (GA) is an optimization technique based on natural evolution theory to find the global optimal solution. Unlike the gradient-based method, it can design nanoscale structures in the electric field because it does not require sensitivity calculation. This research intends to design a nanoaperture with an unprecedented shape by the topology optimization scheme based on the GA and ON/OFF method in the visible frequency range. This research mainly aims to maximize the transmission rate at a measuring area located 10nm under the exit plane and to minimize the electric distribution at other locations. The finite element analysis (FEA) and optimization process are performed by using the commercial package COMSOL combined with the Matlab programming. The final results of the optimized model are analyzed by a comparison of the electric field intensity and the spot size of near field with those of the initial model.

The On-line Electric Vehicle (OLEV) is an electric transport system in which the vehicle's power is transferred wirelessly from power lines underneath the surface of the road. Advantages of the OLEV include reducing battery size and cost to about 20 percent of that of conventional battery-powered electric vehicles, thereby minimizing the vehicle's weight and price, as well as the cost of charging the system. In this paper, we introduce a wireless power transfer mechanism to maximize the electrical performance of the power transfer system. Power transfer capacity, power transfer efficiency, and magnitude of leakage in the electromagnetic field (EMF) are analyzed, and the optimization methodology of the design parameters is discussed.

This paper illustrates the use of electric field computation to optimize the design of high voltage composite bushing. In the bushing, a high electric stress occurred between field shaper and central conductor by the closely space. Also coaxial cylindrical shield has a great height along the axis to control an electric field. Consequently, all the potentials are raised axially along the field shaper and electric stress is concentrated on a part of the surface of the FRP tube near the upper end of the field shaper. Maxwell 2D simulator based on the boundary element method was also introduced in order to verify the reliability of the polymer bushing. The optimized design uses internal elements for electric stress grading at critical parts of the bushing.

This Paper describes an algorithm for the design of axi-symmetrical spacer under specified field conditions. The electric field alas been calculated by combination method of Integral Equation Method(IEM) and Charge Simulation Method(CSM). The contour of spacer is represented with NURB(Non-Uniform Rational B-spline) curve of which effectiveness has been proved. This algorithm introduces a design process in the aspect of electrical field, when a spacer in airtight cylinder is designed. Also various field conditions for obtaining optical shapes have been proposed. Due to the algorithm, the entire process shows a stable convergence. Both tangential and total electrical field are taken into consideration as specified field criteria.
Cultures of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were subjected to the effect of PEF (pulse electric field) and a source of selenium. The culture period after which yeast cells were subjected to PEF treatment was optimized, as was the duration of the exposure. Optimization of the nutrient medium composition in S. cerevisiae cultures resulted in an over 1.8-fold increase in selenium accumulation with relation to cultures on the initial substrate. Optimization of the pH value and of culture duration resulted in selenium accumulation increase by approximately 78%. A significant correlation was found between the accumulation of selenium in yeast cells and its concentration in the culture substrate. The highest accumulation of selenium in the biomass of yeast, approx. $240\;{\mu}g/g$ d.m., was obtained after 15-min exposure to PEF on a 20-h culture. An approx. 50% higher content of selenium in cells was recorded, as compared with the control culture without the application of PEF.
This paper proposes a method to calibrate the electrode misplacement in underwater electric field sensor arrays (EFSAs) for accurate measurements of underwater electric field signatures. The electrode misplacement of an EFSA was estimated by measuring the electric field signatures generated by a known electric source and by comparing the measurements with the theoretical calculations under similar measurement conditions. When the EFSA measured the electric field signatures induced by an unknown electric source, the electric properties of the unknown electric source were approximated by considering the optimized estimation of the electrode misplacement of the EFSA. Finally, the measured electric field signatures were calibrated by calculating the theoretical electric field signatures to be measured with an ideally installed EFSA without electrode misplacement; the approximated electric properties of the unknown electric source were also taken into account. Simulations were conducted to test the proposed calibration method. The results showed that the electrode misplacement could be estimated. Further, the electric field measurements and the electric field-based localization of underwater vessels became more accurate after the application of the proposed calibration method. The proposed method will contribute to applications such as the detection and localization of underwater electric sources, which require accurate measurements of underwater electric field signatures.
